RC Holy Spirit, Interact and Rotaract clubs help adopted schools prepare for opening of classes
The Department of Educations National Schools Maintenance Week, known as Brigada Eskwela, was implemented last May 21-26, 2012 to help public schools prepare for the opening of classes next month. Clubs in District 3780 participated in Brigada Eskwela in Quezon City following the Memorandum of Agreement signed last May 4, 2012 by DGE Penny Policarpio and Dr Corazon Rubio, DepEDs City Schools Superintendent. Organizations which supported the Brigada Eskwela Project included the Armed Forces of the Philippines, USAID, ABS-CBN, Globe Telecom, and Petron, among other volunteer groups. PE Marcia Salvador treated our youth partners-in -service, numbering 17, to lunch after the mornings hard work. On Wednesday, May 23, our Interactors continued to repair broken desks, some of which were really beyond repair. On Thursday, May 24, with the paint and brushes donated by RCHS, repainting of the schools hallways began. Again, our Interactors were busy at work, together with the schools student government leaders, and with some Mormons helping. Re-painting work continued on Friday, May 25. PE Marcia made a personal donation of an additional pail of paint to ensure that the required re-painting jobs were

Rotary clubs around the globe have many things in common, including a commitment to service. All year long, clubs are taking action to make a difference in their communities. Heres a roundup of recent club activities worldwide:
Austria In August, Districts 1910 and 1920 (parts of Austria; Bosnia-Herzegovina) hosted 24 students and two Rotarians from Japan who were affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Many of the students had lost their homes or had to evacuate, or lost parents or other relatives. Japanese and Austrian Rotarians covered the cost of the flights (Lufthansa provided discounted tickets), accommodations, and other expenses, and the governments of both countries offered additional financial support. Canada Members of the Rotary Club of Ladner, B.C., have been instrumental in a campaign to rid the provinces coast ofspartina anglica, or common cordgrass, a noxious weed that was planted to control erosion but whose spread now poses a danger to wetland areas. This fall, club members put in 58 hours of work, hand-pulling 250 bags, or 5 tons, of the weed. They finished that stretch of shoreline in October. Curaao The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti left thousands of people with injuries that required amputations. This October, members of the Rotary Club of Willemstad brought 10 amputees to Curaao, where each patient was fitted with a prosthetic leg and underwent six weeks of physical therapy. The club worked with the Royal Netherlands Navy, which provided accommodations in its barracks, and with local companies Insel Air and ABC Bus Company, which covered travel expenses. Indonesia Through a mobile clinic, medics from a hospital in Yogyakarta have provided care to 3,636 homeless children who lost their families in the 2006 eruption of Mount Merapi. After a Group Study Exchange trip to District 3400, team leader Hugo Pike, of the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge, England, worked with his district to develop the idea. The US$20,000 Rotary Foundation Matching Grant project got underway in September 2010, but another eruption of Mount Merapi that October halted progress for several months. After the effort resumed, it expanded to 22 locations. Pakistan Rotarians in Karachi used a van emblazoned with messages in English and Urdu to share information about polio during Subnational Immunization Days in December. Club members also visited a school in the nearby town of Korangi, where they gave drops of vaccine to 238 children and worked with administrator Naushaba Burney to distribute fliers about the disease to students and teachers. Philippines Rotarians in District 3830 carried out two dozen projects after an environmental conference in November 2010. They far exceeded their goal of planting 5,000 trees, or two for every Rotarian in the district. By the end of 201011, they had planted 23,000 trees and expected to add another 25,000 in 2011-12. USA The Rotary Club of Honeoye Falls-Mendon, N.Y., created a self-guided audio tour of 12 local sites, including the Lower Mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the 1837 Mendon town hall; and a one-room schoolhouse thats now a museum. Visitors can use their cell phones to listen to information about the stops on the tour. Instructions are posted at each location and are available in brochures and at www.hfmrotary.org/ tour.html . Zambia The village of Mwandi is home to hundreds of AIDS orphans whose caregivers are elderly relatives. Working with the United Church of Zambia Mission Partners, the nearby Rotary Club of Livingstone is helping these families by replacing 31 deteriorating huts with more stable, traditional African mud houses, and aims to build 25 more. Rotarians from District 6000 (Iowa, USA) have participated in the project, which has benefited 64 families and 200 orphans as of November.

IPP Dodgie Osabel stresses potential value of information, technology and internet in development
At the meeting last April 26th, Congressman Dodgie discussed the current state of information technology, the internet and social networking channels and their potential value to help barangays and local communities in development. IPP Dodgie suggested that the organization that has been supporting his advocacy, www.alagad.com.ph, shall be prepared to lead the Digital Awareness Project for Poverty Alleviation and Community Development. At the core of this project is the development of CONTENT that is popularly written and packaged, relevant, and useful for our barangay and community leaders. He believes that the best way of doing this is thru a sustainable enterprise approach -- with barangay and LGU subscribers and institutional sponsors foot the bill for the service.

RI President-Elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through Service in 2012-13
Rotary International News
Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district governors. "Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways." joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in 1975, he said, he began to realize that his life's purpose was not to make more money, but to be useful to other people. "I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to build peace," Tanaka said. He noted that the Japanese tradition of putting the needs of society above the needs of the individual helped his country rebuild after the tsunami and earthquake in March.
"This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as more important than our own Peace has different meanings for different people, Tanaka said. "No defini- needs -- when we focus our energies on a shared goal that is for the good of tion is right, and no definition is wrong," he said. "However we use the word, all -- this changes everything," he said. "It changes our priorities in a completely fundamental way. And it changes how we understand the idea of this is what peace means for us. peace." Another pride of RCHS, Sports Chair David Kim, emerged overall champion in the 1 st Gov Jess Cifra Golf Tournament held on April 19 at the Splendido Golf & Country Club. The announcement of the awards had been timed with the Rotary International District 3780 Conference held last April 20-21, 2012 at the Taal Vista Hotel. Silver Discon 2012 represented the culminating event of Rotary in the District for RY 2011-2012. The purpose of the inspirational addresses, entertainment & fellowship events, demonstrations of service-above-self through photo exhibits and an actual community service rendered by Rotary spouses led by Spouse Helen Cifra, has been to inspire Rotarians to become more involved in service and for them to develop a vision of Rotary beyond the club level. Like all previous Discons, it had been a conference characterized by a meticulously-organized programme, a roster of well chosen speakers, wonderful entertainment, well-appointed venue with a breath-taking view of Taal Volcano, and the presence of RI Presidents Representative PDG Kamal Sanghvi and Spouse Sonal, and many other dignitaries. President Ped Condeno, PP Linda Palattao, PE Marcia Salvador, Chair Ric Salvador, PN Dr Bong Jung, PND Willy Fabroa, and Rtns Marites Nepomuceno and Peth Rivera attended the DISCON. Rtns Willy and Marites were first-time Discon attendees and were duly recognized at the conference.

July 13 - Club members understand rights of women and children and agree to help spread awareness in the community to avoid violence and abuse
The guest speaker at the clubs regular meeting last July 13 was Ms Salvacion Shiot Pascual, noted researcher, writer, and lecturer on womens and childrens rights. Shiot spoke lengthily about Republic Act No 9262 otherwise known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004. The act underscores the need to protect the family and its members especially women and children against violence and threats to their personal safety and security. Shiot cited disturbing true-to-life cases of violence where women and children suffered from physical/sexual violence, psychological/emotional harm, and economic/financial abuse. The discussions were made even more informative as former barangay chair Rtn Neneng Valmocina related actual cases of violence against women and children happening within our own community. Among those present during the meeting was AG Rose Imperial who expressed interest in inviting Shiot to assist in her clubs outreach programs in Loyola Heights.
Jan 17 - RC Holy Spirit provides first aid kits to garbage collectors to safeguard their health in case of accidents and help ensure uninterrupted community service
On January 17, 2012, RCHS donated eight (8) first-aid kits to the Barangay Council of Holy Spirit for use of the crew members of the Eco-Waste Department in response to a request by the barangay council.. The barangay owns and operates eight (8) garbage collection trucks with a total complement of 38 paleros (garbage collectors). Inspite of preventive measures and care exercised by the men, accidents do happen in the course of their work. First-aid treatments are always urgently needed to contain the adverse effects of accidents like cuts and bruises while they are out in the field away from the health center. The eight garbage collection teams serve a very large urban community: septic, two 120 ml bottles Hydrogen Peroxide, one bottle of 250 ml Ethyl Alcohol 70%, 20 capsules Amoxicillin, 20 tablets Biogesic (paracetamol), one pair of scissors, gauze bandage, first-aid paper tape, cotton balls. The donation was received from RCHS President Ped Condeno and Treasurer Marcia Salvador by Kagawad Lydia Ballesteros, Chair of the barangays Health & Sanitation Committee, Kagawad Bernardito Sabalilag, and Mr Alarmo Matriano of the Eco-Waste Department. At the turn-over President Ped wished that the garbage-truck teams will not need to use the first-aid kits from RC Holy Spirit. He reminded them to be extra careful in their work and wear protective devices such as hand gloves.

Jan 28 - Club participates in the campaign for relief and rehabilitation of Sendongs victims
RCHS sent last January 28, 2012 sixteen (16) boxes of assorted clothes and linens through RC SFDM for the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Mindanao. The donations came from club members and associates, as well as from friends at The Seed Montessori, and were sorted and packed by members of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School. At about the same time, President Ped Condeno turned over to DG Jess Cifra during the Districts mid-year review a check for P35,000 representing the Clubs financial assistance to the rehabilitation program for the flood victims. The cash donations came from RCHS members and friends of President Ped in the USA and Canada.
Oct 8 - RC Holy Spirit joins other clubs in tree-planting to protect the environment
It had been continuously raining due to a low pressure area that had hovered over the country for several days but this did not deter President Ped, IPP Dodgie, PP Linda, Rtns Marcia, Ric, Peth and Marlene and associate member Malou from joining the tree-planting activity at the La Mesa Dam watershed last Saturday, October 8, 2011. At 6:30AM, the group met with District Chair for Environment AG Butch Madarang and other Rotarians at the watershed and proceeded to an area where holes were waiting to be planted with saplings of various species. The day marked the launching of the UN Tree Planting Environment Summit which District 3780 supports. According to AG Butch, all 93 clubs in the district were expected to participate and plant 30 tree saplings each.

Sept 28 - RC Holy Spirit participates in District campaign to End Rabies in QC, Now Na!
The program of eradicating rabies in Quezon City was launched last Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Bulwagan Amoranto, Quezon City Hall as part of the World Rabies Day Celebration/Mission that is held every year on this date. The Task Force Lead Group drafted the initial stage of OPLAN Eradication of Rabies with the battle cry: END RABIES IN QC NOW NA! (which was coined by Rotarian AG Butch Madarang, chair of the Districts anti-rabies committee.) Launched simultaneously in 9 rabies-infected barangays, RC Holy Spirit officers coordinated the project in Barangay Batasan Hills. We were represented by AG Linda Palattao, SP Ped Condeno, Sec JR Delgra, and Interactors Rommel Pesimo and Aris Delgra.

Sept 25 RC Holy Spirit organizes Intercity meet where Rotaractors & Interactors learn HIV/AIDS & drug abuse and how to prevent these
Some 80 Rotaractors and Interactors attended the inter-city seminar on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse Prevention held at the QC Red Cross Building last September 25, 2011, a Sunday. Ms Janice Melody Adolfo, RN, Head of the QCRC Community Health, spoke before Rotaractors on HIV/AIDS prevention. As President Ped Condeno mentioned in his welcome remarks, the seminar was very timely since recent data showed that for the past eight years, while most countries reported a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection, the Philippines and six other countries have reported an upward trend, increasing by more than 800% in less than a decade. Some of the points emphasized in the HIV-AIDS session:
HIV is a virus that infects people by getting inside their blood cells. To avoid getting HIV, a person must prevent the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk of someone who is infected from entering the body through anatomical openings such mouth or breaks in ones skin. Specifically the resource person reminded the Rotaractors and grown-ups of the time-tested ABCDE rule:
Pres Ped Condeno of RC Holy Spirit welcomes all attendees and resource persons
Abstain from sex Be faithful to your partner Consistently use condoms Do not use illegal drugs Educate yourself Rotaract club presidents call the inter-city meeting to order
In the concurrent session, Interactors interacted with Mesdames Lilybeth Selda and Maria Carmen Chua of the Quezon City Anti-Drug Council who spoke on Drug Abuse and its consequences.
Top substances being used: Shabu (Methampethamine Hydrochloride); Marijuana; Corex-DM (Cough/Cold Medicine); and Rugby Some proven ways to prevent drug abuse:
DONT TRY, DONT START Close family ties Choose your friends Community vigilance
In her closing remarks, Ms. Annie D. Torres, RN, Administrator of QC Red Cross urged the young participants to share what they have just learned with their parents, relatives and friends. The inter-city meeting was organized by RC Holy Spirit in cooperation with the Quezon City Red Cross. Co-hosts of RCHS in the event were 8 clubs: RC Biak na Bato, RC Commonwealth, RC Greenmeadows, RC Metro Diliman, RC New Manila East, RC Pag-asa, RC San Francisco del Monte and RC Timog. It was made possible through the efforts of the officers and members of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit, under the guidance of Sec. JR Delgra, Chair of RCHS New Generations Committee.

Nov 9 RCHS trains 335 young pupils to practise oral hygiene and prevent tooth decay
RCHS conducted a fluoride application and dental care education project for preparatory school pupils of Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit on November 9, 2011. The team led by Rtn Dr Marylene Martinez applied fluoride agents to the teeth of 335 kindergarten pupils, done in two (2) batches, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Due to limited space in the school, the procedure was done per class of about 25 children. There were eight (8) classes in the morning, and another eight in the afternoon. Before the fluoride application, the children listened to a short lecture by Rtn Marlene on the proper way of brushing their teeth. The children were also given toothbrush and toothpaste packages, generously provided by Colgate-Palmolive Philippines Inc. The team was prepared to cater to 400 kids; however, some were absent for one reason or another. The topical fluorides were applied to the enamel surface of the teeth of the pupils to reduce the incidence of dental decay. Not all the children were happy about the procedure; some cried, while some simply did not want to open their mouths. Dr Marlene prescribed medication for a child found to have swollen gums. Assisting Rtn Dr Marlene in the fluoridization were President Ped, Treasurer Marcia, Rotarian Peth, associate members Malou, Liza and Neng as well as Rotaractors and Interactors led by PE Kevin and Pres Harold, respectively. Thanks to all those who lent their time and effort in this worthy project. Thanks to Mrs Emely Pelobello, principal of Dona Juana Elementary School, for providing morning and afternoon snacks to all the volunteers, and to the kindergarten teachers for their assistance. RCHS especially thanks Colgate-Palmolive for providing the toothbrushes and toothpastes for the children. Thirteen Rotaractors and Interactors of Holy Spirit cheerfully prepared the 400 dental packs on Saturday night at the Salvador residence, before the Wednesday event with the tots in school.

RC Holy Spirit turned over 1500 textbooks and various reading materials to five (5) public schools last July 3, 2011. The beneficiaries were: Holy Spirit National High School, Judge Feliciano Belmonte High School, Holy Spirit Elementary School, Dona Juana Elementary School and Calawis Elementary School. Except for Calawis Elementary School, all the beneficiary schools are located in Barangay Holy Spirit, the host community of RCHS. Each school got about 300 books for their libraries. Sept 2 RC Holy Spirit leads 53 Rotary clubs of D3780 in the distribution & donation of 13,200 volumes of reference books to 100 public schools
It was one project that tested the resilience of the club. 13,200 volumes of mostly hardbound reference books to be given to a hundred schools through some 50 Rotary clubswith just a day of preparation! A logistics nightmare! First, how to haul the huge number of books from the SM warehouse in Quiapo to the DAHHA clubhouse in Bgy Holy Spirit in Quezon City. With trucks of Pres Ped and AG Linda, the cargo was brought to its destination. Then the big problem! The books had to be sorted into high school, elementary and pre-school levels, bundled by straw cords for easier handling, and finally piled into stacks for each school. Thanks to the 2 dozen Rotaractors and Interactors, under the supervision of Pres Ped, PP Linda, Sec JR and Treas Marcia, all these were accomplished in nine (9) hours lasting up to 9:30 pm on the eve of the book-distribution. Governor Jess Cifra witnessed last September 2 the turnover of books by Rotary clubs to principals and officials of the 37 public high schools, 50 elementary schools and 15 preparatory schools that the clubs had identified as needy beneficiaries. The large-scale book-distribution activity involved the donation of 13,200 volumes of mostly hardbound reference books that had originated from a US-based partner library of SM Foundation. This project represented an expansion of the already on-going literacysupport book donation activity of RC Holy Spirit with SM Foundation as sponsor. The distribution was done with the help of 53 participating Rotary clubs in RID 3780 which had been earlier requested by RC Holy Spirit to identify public schools which badly needed reference books in their respective libraries. The project was successfully completed by RC Holy Spirit through a concerted effort of Rotarians, associ-

Oct 19 - Rotarians unwind, then rewind for service with RC Marikina North D3800
October 19, 2011 was meant to be a regular fellowship night. It, however, turned out to be a special fellowship night for three (3) reasons: it was a belated celebration of Rtn Peths birthday last October 16; our AG Rose Imperial came and donated P5,000 to the Club; our friends from sister club RC Marikina North District 3800 also came. We turned over to President Terry and VP Lina of RCMN 50 sets of towels, laundry detergent, toothbrush and toothpaste for the prisoners in Montalban whose prison cells were flooded during the last typhoon. Working together with the Sta Cecilia Parish Church and Parochial School, RCMN asked for our assistance in providing toiletries to 265 needy prisoners located in Dela Costa, Montalban, Rizal in a mission scheduled last October 23, 2011. In response to our sister clubs request, Rtn Nonoy Solidum donated 50 bath towels while the Club donated detergents, toothbrushes and toothpaste for 50. All had a great time with the jokes and funny stories shared by CP Nides, IPP Dodgie, Presidents Ped and Terry, punctuated by the trademark performance of CP Nides on his harmonica. In the absence of a karaoke, the group contented themselves with singing a cappella, and everyone was game contributing a song number or two.

Team-building workshop enhances leadership and teamwork skills of Rotaract and Interact members
Last March 3, 2012, 13 Rotaractors and 14 Interactors hied off to the retreat house of IPP DodgieOsabel in Barangay Calawis in Antipolo City for a team-building activity facilitated by Honorary Member Engr Joe del Rosario and his spouse Dr Naty. They were accompanied by Pres Ped Condeno, IPP Dodgie, PE Marcia Salvador, Chair JR Delgra of the Service for New Generation, and Chair Ric Salvador of Administration. The retreat house was a very conducive venue for the activity, given its natural setting. Barangay Calawis sits at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, and is one of the remote barangays in Antipolo City. The Rotaractors and Interactors received from Rtn Joe valuable insights on leadership and teamwork. Rtn Joe also engaged them in fun and challenging team-building games and exercises to reinforce concepts learned. Our heartfelt thanks to Engr Joe and spouse Dr Natydel Rosario for sharing their time and resources for the benefit of our youth partners-in-service.

That distinction is actually held by Harriss friend Silvester Schiele, who served as the first president of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Harris deferred his club leadership duties until February 1907, when he was elected the third president of the Chicago club. Club firsts On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. A second club was formed in San Francisco in 1908, and soon after, clubs began to pop up across North America. On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehrs office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. On 1 August 1912, the Rotary Club of London became the first club chartered outside of North America. The Rotary Club of Dublin, Ireland, had been organized earlier, but didnt receive its charter until 1 May 1913. Presidential firsts Paul Harris was elected as first president of the National Association of Rotary Clubs (which later became Rotary International) in 1910, and is the only president to have served two terms. Other firsts: Canadian E. Leslie Pidgeon (1917-18) was the first Rotary president from outside the United States, Sydney W. Pascall (1931-32) was the first from Great Britain, and Maurice Duperrey (1937-38) was the first from continental Europe. Learn more about past Rotary presidents. Foundation firsts In 1929, The Rotary Foundation gave its first gift, US$500, to the International Society for Crippled Children (later Easter Seals), which was founded in 1921 by Rotarian Edgar F. Allen, of the Rotary Club of Elyria, Ohio, USA. Read more about Allen and Easter Seals. Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established in 1957 to show appreciation for contributions, and to encourage substantial ones, to what was then the Foundations only program: Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Today, the recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. Learn more about donor recognition. Convention facts Edinburgh, Scotland, hosted the first convention outside North America in June 1921. Rotarys first convention in Asia was held in Tokyo in 1961. Among the record-setting 23,366 paid and unpaid registrants was the emperor of Japan. The largest convention to date, based on the number of paid registrants, was Osaka, Japan, in 2004, followed by the Rotary centennial convention, held in Chicago in 2005. .
Harriss desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship.
Rotarys founder, Harris, was born in Wisconsin, USA, on 19 April 1868. He was raised by his paternal grandparents in Vermont and attended the University of Vermont, Princeton, and the University of Iowa. He was Rotary president from 1910 to 1912 and a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago until his death on 27 January 1947. Learn more about the founder of Rotary in The Life and Times of Paul Harris. Loehr, a mining engineer, was born on 18 October 1864 in Carlinville, Illinois. He was a Rotarian for only a few years, never holding office at the club or international level. But that first Rotary meeting was held in his office, Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. He died in Chicago on 23 May 1918. A Rotarian for only a few years, Shorey served as recording secretary during the clubs first year. He was born in Maine in August 1862 and died in March 1944. Schiele, a coal dealer, served as the Chicago clubs first president in 1905 and Rotary Internationals third treasurer in 1945. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1870, Schiele attended Terre Haute Business College and served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. He was president of the Schiele Coal Company from 1902 until his retirement in 1939. He and Harris became lifelong friends and lived near each other on the South Side of Chicago. Schiele died on 17 December 1945 and is buried near Harris at Mount Hope Cemetery. Originally from Michigan, Ruggles was a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and joined Rotary at its second meeting. He was treasurer of the Chicago club during its first year, president from 1908 to 1910, and a Rotary director from 1912 to 1913. He is known for having introduced singing to Rotary club meetings. His printing company, H.L. Ruggles & Co., printed the first issue of The National Rotarian and the first Rotary songbook. He died on 26 October 1959, an honorary member of seven clubs in addition to his home club, the Rotary Club of Chicago.

Large-scale medical, dental and diagnostic mission organized by RC Holy Spirit and partners serves nearly 2,000 poor patients
Another partnership project dubbed Gamot Para sa Kapwa medical/dental/diagnostic mission was successfully held last February 11, 2012 at the Don Antonio Heights covered court and the senior citizens center for the benefit of underprivileged members of Barangay Holy Spirit. Jointly with the Don Antonio Homeowners Association (DAHHA), St Benedict Parish Pastoral Council (SBPPC), Greater Don Antonio Heights Senior Citizens Association (GDAHSCAI), and with SM Foundation as major sponsor, RC Holy Spirit coordinated and supervised the mission. PP Dr Roger Belleza, chair of RCHSs Health & Wellness Committee, led a team of 19 doctors that gave free medical consultations to 1,249 patients. Joining him were members of his family. Also on hand to share their time and expertise were SP Dr Jess Lim of RC Pag-asa, SP Dr Juvido Agatep of RC Metro Sta Mesa, and Rtn Dr Leandro Sacro of RC Valenzuela RID 3800. Meanwhile, TRF Chair Dr Eui Bong Jung administered acupuncture services to 10 patients, most of whom were very happy to feel relieved from body pains they have had for 3-4 months after only 10-15 minutes of treatment. 276 dental patients were attended to by a team of dedicated dentists led by Rtns Dr Jong Myeong Kim and Dr Marlene Martinez who stayed until the last patient was served at around 5:30pm (the mission was to have ended at 3:00pm). President Terry Amado of RC Marikina North, RID 3800, came to lend a hand with daughter-dentist Dr Kay and a dentist friend. Dr Jong Myeong Kim brought along his family as usual and 19 youth members of Students for Christ who not only acted as dental aides but also provided entertainment to the kids with their balloon-making skills. Dr Myeong also set up an audio-visual system to entertain patients with movies while waiting for their turn. Members of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School and Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit led by President Harold Kim Maggay and PE Kevin Laragan, respectively, were a great help with assisting the patients in the registration, priority and waiting areas. Also busily ensuring that the mission proceeded well were SP Ped Condeno, IPP Dodgie Osabel, Sec JR Delgra, Chair Ric Salvador, Rtn Angel Castro and Rtn Willy Fabroa. PE Marcia Salvador was overall mission coordinator. Volunteers from SMFI, DAHHA, GDAHSCAI, SBPPC and RCHS all worked together to make the mission a successful partnership project. SMFI provided free medicines, the x-ray mobile clinic, ECG machine, urinalysis and FBS services, as well as paramedical staff. DAHHA provided the venue, security and physical set-up. SBPPC and DAHHA gave drinking water for the 130 mission volunteers. RCHS ensured the availability of teams of volunteer doctors and dentists, including a significant number from Rotary clubs. The club also provided food (breakfast, morning & afternoon snacks, and lunch) for the volunteers. Truly an exemplar of collaborative effort!

RC Holy Spirit gets insights from signature community development program of RC Pag-asa
Last February 1, 2012 was no ordinary meeting. It was a great learning experience for RC Holy Spirit as CP Gary Ting, SP Jess Lim, and PE Renzie Dizon of RC Pag-asa QC shared their experiences drawn from their clubs continuing development program for an Aeta resettlement group in Barangay Kanawan, Morong, Bataan. PE Renzie proudly explained the successful kalabasa-growing livelihood project introduced last year which participating farmers have found profitable and worth their efforts. The three gentlemen also related several past livelihood projects that had not been as successful in the Kanawan environment: tricycles project, goatraising, and poultry. erstwhile nomadic hunter-families into a selfreliant, self-sustaining community, RC Pagasa for the last 5 years has been helping by enhancing healthcare through regular medical missions and anti-TB campaigns; uplifting literacy such as by providing school supplies, books & library facilities; daily feeding for school children for body nourishment and to reduce drop-outs; food and entertainment for the entire community during special occasions; and livelihood programs.
At the end of the meeting, about 200 hardbound books and magazines for high school and elementary school students were turned over by RCHS Silver President Ped to RCP Silver President Jess for the benefit of their To transform the re-settled community of adopted schools.

RC Holy Spirit provides first aid kits to garbage collectors to safeguard their health in case of accidents and help ensure uninterrupted community service
The eight garbage collection teams serve a very large urban community: 322 hectares with 158 streets Population of about 150,000 30% Affluent 70% Urban Poor Each first aid kit provided by RCHS contained a bottle Betadine antiseptic, two 120 ml bottles Hydrogen Peroxide, one bottle of 250 ml Ethyl Alcohol 70%, 20 capsules Amoxicillin, 20 tablets Biogesic (paracetamol), one pair of scissors, gauze bandage, first-aid paper tape, cotton balls.

RC Holy Spirit turns over medicines to assist clinic provide free medical consultation service to poor patients
On January 26, 2012, PE Marcia Salvador turned over 6 cartons of assorted medicines to RCHS honorary member Fr Steve Tynan, MGL, Parish Priest of St Benedict Parish in Barangay Holy Spirit, and to Dr Naty Del Rosario, President of the Parish Pastoral Council. The medicines (antibacterial, analgesic, anti-asthma, antacid, etc) will be used in the parish medical clinic which serves poor patients not only from the barangay but also those coming from as far as Payatas and Novaliches. PP Dr Roger Belleza holds free medical consultations at the parish clinic every Wednesday 3-5 PM, in addition to his involvement with almost-weekly medical missions sponsored by SM Foundation.
Club participates in the campaign for relief and rehabilitation of Sendongs victims
RC Holy Spirit begins to identify service project and partner club for matching-grant proposal
RC Holy Spirit led by SP Ped Condeno has decided to take steps needed to complete and submit a matching-grant proposal for a service project that would help resolve a pressing community concern. Several potential projects have already been suggested, including the construction of an especially designed & equipped school room for SPED pupils, and the upgrading of a schools toilet system. First step is to identify and agree on one project. According to RI the most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of the following six areas: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution Disease prevention and treatment Water and sanitation Maternal and child health Basic education and literacy Economic and community development Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation recognize these six areas of focus as organizational priorities. Then, we should identify a foreign Rotary club who would be interested to support the proposed project. In the case of RC Holy Spirit, we could start the exploration with our sister-club RC Seoul Baeksang D3650 in Korea, and with RC San Mateo Sunrise D5150 in California USA whose AG Ms. Becky Nazareno visited us last May for the second time. If necessary, we may also get in touch with Rotary clubs that we would select in the districts with whom DG Jess Cifra signed sisterdistrict agreements at the Bali Rotary Institute last December.

RCHS helps 335 young pupils practise oral hygiene, prevent tooth decay
FERNANDO M DELGRA JR
Secretary & ChairNew Generation

Dr Belleza, chair of our health & wellness committee and his team of medical, dental and other healthcare volunteers serving with SM Foundation attended to 809 cases of sick patients at the Los Banos health center yesterday, November 15, as follows: 490 medical consultations 67 dental service 104 chest x-rays 51 ECGs, 30 bone-scanning, and 67 urinalysis exams
Rotarians can be confident that their contributions to The Rotary Foundation are being well spent. The Foundation has earned a grade of A+ from the American Institute of Philanthropy, a top rating of four stars from Charity Navigator, and full accreditation from the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau. Only 2.3 percent of Foundation funding goes to administrative expenses, and 7.3 percent goes to fundraising. The Foundation focuses more than 90 percent of its spending on programs, far exceeding the threshold of 75 percent that independent charity-rating services view as a measure of high efficiency. That comes as no surprise to Foundation Trustee Steve Brown, who says the organizations grant application and review process contains the safeguards necessary to ensure that funds are used wisely. Typically, Brown explains, international projects funded by the Foundation involve a sponsor club or district, which partners with an on-site host club or district. Funding may go through the sponsor or host. To implement a project, clubs must spell out what they plan on doing, how they plan on doing it, and what Rotarians involvement will be. All projects require a detailed budget and often additional supporting documentation before receiving Foundation approval. Once an approved project is funded, Brown says, a detailed progress report must be presented within one year. The reporting includes verification of what has happened (usually with photos) and requires copies of bank statements showing the flow of funds. The presidents of either the host or sponsor club must sign off on the report. The Foundation has a stewardship committee that can review a project and impose a resolution if issues occur. If money was improperly spent, a club can be asked to return funds or even have its membership in Rotary International terminated.
Click here to view album with stream of 20 photos of the TRF Testimonial Dinner event last 11-11-11.
You dont want to have everything controlled from Evanston, Brown says. We probably have more complaints about our rigorous stewardship than applause for it. But 99 percent of the time, things go the way we expect.

During World Interact Week, 31 October-6 November, Interactors and Rotarians worldwide commemorate the charter of the first Interact club in 1962. To mark this occasion Interact clubs are encouraged to participate in joint projects with their sponsor clubs. Rotarians can celebrate by including Interactors in their weekly meetings, or inviting an Interactor as a guest speaker. "Interactors should be celebrating this week by getting together to review their accomplishments over the past year," says Martin H.F. Bridge, chair of the RI Rotaract/Interact Committee and member of the Rotary Club of South Holland, England. "It is a great time to reflect on the vision of those who started the program nearly 50 years ago." The success of Interact is crucial for the future of Rotary, says Bridge. "Interactors will, in time, understand all about Rotary, and should make good future Rotarians." In turn, reaching out to Interactors "keeps Rotarians young at heart" and provides insight into the thoughts and concerns of younger generations, he added. Bridge says communication between Rotarians and Interactors is important. Interactors should take every opportunity to meet with Rotarians in both their sponsoring club and neighboring clubs.

According to AG Butch, all 93 clubs in the district are expected to participate and plant 30 tree saplings each.
Rabies is a Latin word that means, "madness, rage, fury". Rabies virus causes acute inflammation of the brain. In non-vaccinated humans, rabies is almost invariably fatal after symptoms have developed, although prompt post-exposure vaccination may prevent the virus from progressing. Rabies impact can be controlled by vaccination. It can also be prevented by avoiding to be bitten by a mad dog or cat, or by an infected person. The Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 (Republic Act 9482) requires pet owners to have their dog regularly vaccinated, to report within 24 hours any dog biting incident, to assist the dog bite victim immediately, and to shoulder the medical expenses of the victim. The law imposes fines and imprisonment for certain acts of irresponsible pet ownership including refusal to have the dog vaccinated. Thus, anti-rabies vaccination does not only make sense; its required by law.

Youth learn HIV/AIDS & drug abuse and how to prevent these
Some 75 Rotaractors and Interactors attended the seminar on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse Prevention held at the Quezon City Red Cross Building last Sunday, September 25, 2011. Ms Janice Melody Adolfo, RN, Head of the QCRC Community Health, spoke before Rotaractors on HIV/AIDS prevention. In a concurrent session, the Interactors listened to Mesdames Lilybeth Selda and Maria Carmen Chua of the Quezon City Anti-Drug Council speak on Drug Abuse and its consequences. As President Ped Condeno mentioned in his welcome remarks, the seminar is very timely since recent data showed that for the past eight years, while most countries reported a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection, the Philippines and six other countries have reported an upward trend, increasing by more than 800% in less than a decade. In her closing remarks, Ms Annie D Torres, RN, Administrator of the QC Red Cross urged the young participants to share what they learned during the seminar with their relatives and friends. The inter-city meeting was organized by RC Holy Spirit in cooperation with the Quezon City Red Cross. Co-hosting the event were RC Biak na Bato, RC Commonwealth, RC Greenmeadows, RC Metro Diliman, RC New Manila East, RC Pag-asa QC, RC San Francisco del Monte and RC Timog. It was made possible through the efforts of the officers and members of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit, under the guidance of Sec JR Delgra Chair of RCHS New Generations Committee.

Foreign sister club affiliation helps clubs to grow and develop international outlook & fellowship
By D3780 AG Pastor Mar Reyes RC SFDM
Many clubs, by fear of perceived expense and difficulties, shy away from forging sisterhood relations with foreign clubs. We do not have to be big clubs or clubs endowed with huge resources. Any club for that matter can enjoy the benefits of an enduring and enriching experience, from doing service together, and having fellowship, with a foreign club. After all, Rotary is supposed to promote world peace and understanding and at the same time making our world a better place to live in. So, what is the better way to experience the internationality of Rotary? Get into a foreign sister club relationship. How do we get started? The late Louie Lopez, SFDMs charter member and past president started it all with our club. Because of his vast business dealings in Japan, Singapore, Hawaii and the USA, he saw to it that his business partners and acquaintances introduced him to clubs in the countries he visited. Rotarians who travel abroad can exert a little effort to know clubs in the places they visit. Professional and alumni reunions are a rich source of getting to know foreign clubs. Only last June 29, 2011, we met Rotarian Dolores Bediones from the RC Honolulu Sunrise, in Makati. Her husband is a past president and many of her relatives (she is a Panlilio) are Rotarians. She was tasked by her club to check us out because they want to have their 1st foreign sister club. She said a member of their club has a friend who attended a high school reunion of the Ilocos Norte High School in Laoag, and our Past President Arnold Guerrero happened to be there and handed out his calling card. Other clubs began with non-Filipino members of their clubs. But the biggest source of information could be rotary.org, ProjectLink and Rotary magazines. The rewards of sisterhood relations should not be limited to opportunities for financial assistance like grants or direct donations. A club grows and develops when it builds and nurtures sisterhood relations. Effective and interesting international service projects must always be in the menu because clubs from donor countries are often on the look out for projects to fund. But most of all, it is the excitement and enriching experiences we get from joint activities that make all our efforts worth our while. In my personal experience, when we were invited to attend the Discon in Japan of D-2480, hosted by our sister club RC Isesaki, whose member Tetsuo Ushikubo was the District Governor, I was presented among others, by DG T Tetsuo, with a special gift. Our member Takahiro Yoshida interpreted for me. DG Tetsuo actually handed me a specially folded parchment paper, with colors and strings, unique designs and delicate attachments, which is how marriage contracts are presented in Japan. DG Tetsuo told me: I should take care of our sisterhood relations like we take care of our marriage, and not let the bonds (strings) be detached or broken because it is their intention to keep our relationship an enduring, enriching and fruitful one. It was one Rotary moment I will never forget

RC Holy Spirit turns over 1500 volumes of books to 3 public elementary and 2 high schools
In partnership with SM Foundation Inc and the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association (DAHHA). The principals or their representatives came to the DAHHA Wellness Center to receive the books that were all donated by SM Foundation Inc through the representation of Health & Wellness Chair PP Dr Roger Belleza. In collaboration with SM Foundations Project Manager for Outreach Programs, Mr Bob Navida, RCHS hopes to give more books to more schools in Quezon city, particularly in District II, in furtherance of its literacy program.

Rotarians and teachers cheer up Special Education pupils and their parents
Last July 1, 2011, the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit joined other Rotary clubs in the Philippines as they cheered up children by sponsoring parties in public schools and communities. RC Holy Spirit held its childrens party at the Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit for fifty Special Education (SpEd) pupils. Presently, there are close to 100 SpEd pupils in the school with various disabilities: hearing impairment, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, dyslexia, developmental disorder like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). SpEd children danced, sang, and participated in parlor games during the party. The two-hour program was handled by the five dedicated SpEd teachers: Master-Teacher-in-Charge of SpEd Ms. Gloria C. Tatad, SpEd Coordinator Ms. Dorothy M. Alcantara, Ms. Mary Ann O. Dator, Ms. Rhoda B. Padya-os and Ms. Joan R. Jarcia. Mr. Rene Delgado served as Master of Ceremony. School Principal IV Ms. Emely M. Pelobello presented a plaque of appreciation to RCHS. Ten club membersPresident Ped, IPP Dodgie, PP Linda, Treas Marcia, Sec JR, Dr Bong, Marylene, Kgd Baby, Kgd Lowell and Ric - were on hand, along with three associate members, Rotaractors and Interactors who assisted the teachers during the games. Merienda packs were donated by ex-Councilor Toto Medalla. The District through the courtesy of AG Mar Reyes and spouse Chit sent in 50 tetra-packs of Alaska choco milk for the children. RCHS provided gifts of toys and school supplies for the children, prizes for the games, and balloons to enhance party ambience. Dona Juana Elementary School has always been in the scope of the clubs community service initiatives. Last March, RCHS donated two desktop computers with printers for use by the SpEd teachers. The school has a student population of close to 7,000.
TRF Chair Dr Bong leads Oriental medical mission that served 170 poor patients
