Le Chimie Chemistry Quiz Show 2012 HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL

Contest Mechanics: 1. Depending on the final count of participating schools who confirmed by the end of the confirmation period, a qualifying test may be employed to determine the top eight. Only eight (8) schools will be accommodated to the actual quiz bee (final round). The UP BCS communications staff will inform you not less than three (3) days before the competition if or not a qualifying round will occur. 2. The qualifying round will involve a sit-down exam which must be taken by all participants of your school. It is a 60-item identification type exam that must be accomplished in one (1) hour. 3. The individual scores of the three participants per school will be added to get a cumulative score. The eight (8) schools with the highest cumulative scores will qualify for the final quiz bee round. If ties occur, final list of finalists will depend upon the decision of the UP BCS. 4. All certificates will be awarded prior to the announcement of the finalists. 5. The final quiz bee round will consist of three portions: Very Easy, Easy and Difficult. a. The Very Easy round consists of 10 multiple choice or identification questions. Written computations and the use of calculators are not allowed. All work must be done mentally. The amount of time provided to answer each question is limited to 15 seconds. Each question is worth two (2) points. b. The Easy round consists of 10 problem solving questions. The amount of time provided to answer each question is limited to 30 seconds. Each question is worth three (3) points. c. The Difficult round consists of 10 questions of varying types. Time provided to answer each question also depends on the question and will be announced before the reading of the question. Each question is worth five (5) points. 6. Only two participants will be allowed for the Very Easy and the Easy round. Teams may change contestant line-up only after the end of the Very Easy round. 7. Answer strips will be provided by flaggers assigned to each team. Scratch papers will also be provided during the Easy and Difficult rounds. Each team must write their contestant number at the upper left corner of the sheet. All final answers must be encircled.

8. Each team will be provided with a scientific calculator at the start of the Easy round. Personal writing instruments may be used by contestants. 9. All answers for multiple choice type questions must be written in capital letters. For names of scientists, they must include the given name and the surname, in their proper spellings. Quantities must be written with the proper significant figures and units. 10. Except in the Very Easy round, contestants may start taking down notes and begin solving as soon as the question is read (and projected via LCD projector). A copy of the question will also be provided by the flaggers during the Easy and Difficult round after the first reading of the question. 11. The quizmaster will read each question twice before the time starts. At the sound of the buzzer that indicates end of the allotted time, each team must submit their answer in the given answer strips to their designated flaggers. Flaggers will raise their flags to indicate correct answers and the quizmaster reads the names or numbers of schools who got the question correctly. 12. Clarifications about the questions and answers may be raised to the panel of judges composed of University of the Philippines-Manila, Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Chemistry Unit faculty. All clarifications must be raised before the beginning of the next question. 13. A summary of scores will be announced at the end of each round. 14. At the end of the Easy Round, the three teams with the lowest scores will be eliminated. Only five (5) teams will play the Difficult round and all members of the team may contribute simultaneously. 15. Scores from the Very Easy and Easy rounds will be carried over. 16. If there are ties after the Difficult round, sudden death questions will be asked until the tie is broken. 17. The top three (3) schools with the highest scores after the Difficult round will be awarded medals, trophies, and cash prizes. 18. The top scorer for the qualifying round will also be awarded a medal.
