Publishers Note
Well here we are and 2012 is already almost half over! Where on earth did the frst half of
this year go?
Before you know it, the markets will be bursting with plump Niagara tomatoes and the
fruit trees will be laden down with sweet, juicy peaches and plums. Is there a better place
to be than Niagara in the summertime?
While many folks like to get away for a summer holiday, we here in Niagara sometimes
forget how much our own backyard has to offer. From great theatre and dining in Ni-
agara-on-the-Lake, to the splendour of Niagara Falls, the back roads and laneways of
Jordan, Beamsville and Vineland, not to mention being bordered by two Great Lakes, we
here in the Niagara region are truly blessed.
In this edition of the Silver Journal, several of the articles are devoted to helping you live
a healthier, more active lifestyle and there are many great ways to do this in Niagara.
Biking and walking are both great ways to keep ft and what better place to do both than
the Welland Canals Parkway Trail? The recreational parkway runs parallel with the
Welland Canal. The section of the trail which extends from the St. Catharines Museum at
Lock 3 and Lock 1 at Port Weller is 9 kilometers in length. The full length of the Welland
Canals Parkway Trail extends 42 km from Port Colborne to St. Catharines. There are
plenty of picnic areas along the way where you can stop off, have a bite to eat and watch
the ships as they pass through the locks. No matter how old you are this experience never
fails to captivate, as these huge ships rise up in the water and navigate the narrow walls of
the locks.
If wine is one of your interests, then Niagara is a dream come true for you! There are
literally dozens and dozens of wineries for you to explore, all with scheduled winery tours
and tastings, with many offering light meals and events that pair their best wines with
delectable offerings from local chefs. Check out winecountryontario.ca to locate the win-
eries youd like to visit!
We could likely fll all of these pages with things to do and see in Niagara, but you prob-
ably get the idea. The most important thing is that you get out and do some exploring;
you might be surprised at what you fnd. In the words of Dorothy Gale in the 1939 classic,
The Wizard of Oz, theres no place like home. Aint it the truth!

Watch out for the whips!
Whips?!
What whips?!
There was no time to wonder as a snap-crackling horde of monkey-
masked dancers raced towards us, wildly snapping long leather-
handled rope whips.
Had I wandered onto an S&M flm set? No just a parade rehearsal
night on the French island of Guadeloupe.
Like most Caribbean islands, Guadeloupe offcially celebrates
Carnival or the Mardi Gras Festival, beginning the last Sunday of the
Epiphany and concluding on Ash Wednesday. Vaval, the character
who symbolizes the spirit of Carnival is celebrated, touted and
ultimately burned on Ash Wednesday. Until his fery end, Carnival
is all about indulging in lifes pleasures - food, drink, music and fun
joyously exploiting the fat days before the self-denial period of
Lent arrives. While the music, parties, costumes, food and dancing
may be similar to what youll fnd on other islands - and indeed in
Catholic countries around the world what sets Guadeloupe apart
is its explosive enthusiasm.
Never let it be said that anyone is unprepared when Carnival
offcially begins on Guadeloupe - theyll already have been practicing
for more than a month.
Guadeloupians love a celebration and one that spans four weeks is
far better than one that lasts only a few days. Every Sunday evening
beginning in January, therefore, they practice. Wildly costumed
dance troupes and bands gather on the main streets of towns and
villages across the island, as well as on the streets of the capital city
of Basse-Terre to practice their routines, shake their feathers and
snap those whips.
Oh yes, the whips.
The monkey-face masks and whips are symbolic of the slave owners
who once inhabited the sugar-cane producing island of Guadeloupe,
treating not parade audiences but rather the unfortunate feld
workers to the snapping of their whips. The message portrayed by
the parade dancers is this: slavery is dead and the once-powerful
plantation owners reduced to nothing more than monkeys with
whips that crack but deliver no sting.
The whip-wielding monkeys are just one of the many characters
marching in the streets. Drummers, singers, dancers some
dressed in traditional black and white and others swathed in many
layers of the bright madras cotton plaids the island is known for
leap and spin, glistening with sweat in the heat of the Caribbean
night.
Its impossible to merely watch the procession the passion is
contagious. The rhythms capture the audience and soon hands
reach out and touch across the crowd, pulling spectators onto the
street and into the magic.
Its a wonderful metaphor for the seductive pull that this butterfy-
shaped French outpost exerts on all those who fnd their way there.
You cant simply come and go a part of you will become entwined
in its tropical arms and youll never be quite the same.
Christoper Columbus was the frst tourist to visit the island on his
second trip to the new world in 1493. Looking for fresh water to
replenish supplies on his ships, Columbus found a place called
Karukera or land of beautiful water by the Carib Indians. He came
ashore to fnd a place so beautiful he was moved to dedicate the
island to the Virgin Mary, renaming it Santa Mara de Guadalupe
de Extremadura, after the image of the Virgin Mary at the famous
Spanish monastery of Villuercas, in Guadalupe, Extremadura.
During his stay in Guadeloupe, Columbus became enchanted by
a new fruit he called pia de Indias, meaning pine of Indies or
pineapple. (In fact, it was hardly a new discovery, given that South
Americans had been enjoying the fruit for many years, but the name
was certainly catchy!) Today, locals will tell you the most delicious
pineapple in the world grows in Guadeloupe. Have a taste it will
spoil you for any other.

Guadeloupe will spoil you for other things as well like beach
scenery. While every Caribbean island boasts of the beauty of its
sandy stretches, few can match the heart-stopping spectacle of La
Pointe des Chateaux, enormous conical boulders that rise from the
sea like the turrets of an indestructible sand castle. When the waves
smash against them, sending explosions of froth and foam high

in the air, its mesmerizing
and the kind of photo-op that
makes you grateful for digital
technology. Youll want to
take a hundred shots.

Because the water at La Pointe
des Chateaux is a little wilder
than on other beaches, its less
popular for swimming and
sunbathing. If youre lucky,
you might have the sand all to
yourself.

The chefs of Guadeloupe
many of whom are escapees
from the best kitchens in
Paris will be an important
part of the spoiling process. Bringing a European savoir-faire to
the preparation of the locally sourced seafood, fsh and produce,
the transplanted chefs work with their Guadeloupian culinary
colleagues in a synergy that produces meals that far exceed the
usual fried-fsh-and-plantain specials found on so many islands.
Chef Simon of the tiny but chic Hotel Le Jardin Malanga in Trois
Rivires is a case in point. Guests who visit his casual open-air
dining room nestled at the base of a lush tropical hillside soon
become eager devotees of his cooking. Working in a small kitchen,
using mostly ingredients grown on the property, Simon has created
a menu that draws guests from around the island. I like to go out
to the garden, see whats ripe and plan my menu around it. If you
go, be sure to have the signature accrar (crispy fried balls of cod
fsh mixed with onions, chives, sweet peppers, herbs and garlic
a traditional Guadeloupian treat) and be generous with the sweet
chili and lime juice topping, Simons own delectable modifcation
for the dish.
One element of the Guadeloupe experience that has a distinctly
spoiling effect is this: things work very well there. Air-conditioners
hum effciently because the power source is endlessly reliable, roads
are smooth and well-maintained and public services such as buses
and hospitals are dependable. It feels a little like the Switzerland of
the Caribbean in this regard. Being a part of France, has meant that
Guadeloupe, for all its quaint tropical charms, has maintained a
steady march into the future, enjoying all the infrastructure support
so many of its neighbouring islands have missed out on.
Stunning beach views, great cuisine, solid infrastructure, the
worlds best pineappleyes, all these elements will contribute to
spoiling you for future island adventures elsewhere but what sets
Guadeloupe apart from all competitors is its outrageous, glorious
sense of abundance.
A visit to the Botanical Gardens in Deshaies is like a return to Eden
as trees laden with fuschia-pink fowers droop lazily towards the
earth too full of their own beauty to hold their lush heads up any
longer. Vines of brilliant green wind and tangle together, long-
legged water birds land in warm ponds to snap up schools of tiny
fsh. Its as if Nature feels particularly generous here and is offering
a welcome as warm as the one youll be given by the Guadeloupians
themselves.
Visit La GRIVELIERE Coffee Farm located in Vieux Habitants
in south Basse-terre to learn how rich dark chocolate is made
from cocoa beans that grow wrapped in sweet pulp thats nearly
as delicious as the fnal product itself. While the friendly hostess
demonstrates the process, youll be given a handful to try. Like it?
Another handful is always on offer.
Be sure to tour the national park in north Basse-terre. Our guide,
Alain had a gentle ability to commune as well with people as
he did with the natural world. (If youre looking for the kind of
extraordinary tours we had, make a point of contacting him at
ginkoland@yahoo.fr) As we wandered along cow paths sometimes
sharing the walkway with bovine brethren Alain introduced us to
natural answers for most of what ails the outside world, from bay
rum leaves used to fght fever and infuenza, to the Naked Indian
tree whose boiled bark makes a power aphrodisiac to the Travelers
Palm Tree, a succulent ready to provide a liter and a half of water at
the poke of knife in its green trunk. Remarkably, Alain shared these
wonders in such a way that didnt leave us feeling foolish because
wed managed to let the Guadeloupian experience elude us to this
point. Youll appreciate that trait in him when he introduces you to
his beautiful homeland.
Its a place where
life is celebrated to
the fullest, where
more champagne
is drunk than in
any other French
country (unoffcial
estimates suggest
three bottles per
person per year) and
where an estimated
70 percent of the
one million liters of
rum produced annually is never exported but is instead consumed
by appreciative Guadeloupians. It is a place of celebration a
place where, even as the effgy of Vaval, the Carnival spirit, lies
smoldering in death on Ash Wednesday, plans are already in place
for his colorful rebirth, next January.

Guadeloupe is an island of surprises, as the dramatic landscape of
Western Basse-Terre, punctuated by La Soufrire volcano contrasts
sharply with the rolling hills, fat lands and tourist-flled beaches of
eastern Grande-Terre. Its a butterfy with two distinctly different
wings but a seductive symmetry all its own.

Summer is around the corner with warmer weather
and longer days! How exciting! Knowing beautiful days are ahead
lets keep in mind the importance of getting outside for some exercise
in the warm sun shine. Also remember the importance of drinking
plenty of water to keep hydrated if youre outside exercising. At any
age, EXERCISE is the key to improving your overall health and with
a little sun shine you can be sure to boost your vitamin D intake!
No matter your age its never too late to get started on a new ftness
program! Lets cover swimming in this segment!
Swimming can be an excellent ftness choice for those warm
summer months. Swimming is a great choice for seniors ready to
start a ftness program to help build strength and over all wellness.
I use to teach water aerobics in the United States and I can not tell
you how much fun we had and how incredibly safe swimming can
be. The best part about working out in a pool is that its very good
for our aging, aching bodies and we can stay nice and cool while
doing an aerobics class or laps around the pool!
Swimming is safe at any age and it allows you to move your body
without bearing weight, with no heavy force or impact on your
bones, joints or muscles. Our bodies are approximately the same
density as water so you are easily supported by it, putting far less
stress on your joints and bones
Some benefts of swimming are improvement in cardio vascular
conditioning, improvement in your balance, fexibility, coordination,
posture and increased muscle strength, all this without heavy impact
on your bones or joints. Swimming can help with weight loss, reduce
stress, tension and help reduce osteoporosis. Swimming will help
lengthen the number of years you have and will help you maintain
a healthier happier YOU!
I also wanted to emphasize the importance of staying hydrated
when youre out doing exercise in the sun especially for those of you
who are vulnerable to the heat.
During physical activity your body loses water primarily through
your sweat, even if the weather is cool or youre out swimming
remember dehydration can happen before you get thirsty. So keep
in mind to drink 1 or 2 cups in the morning, 1 or 2 cups before
exercise, take sips of water during exercise and after your workout
drink plenty of water to replenish the fuids you lost. Water is super
important to keeping your body healthy!
A fnal suggestion before you get out in the pool for your ftness
activity. First, make sure you have consulted with your doctor.
Second, make sure you are in a clean pool with adequate safety
equipment, life guards or people around. Third keep water handy
and last of all make sure you dont forget to put on your sunscreen!
No matter which program you choose whats important is to START
TODAY! Stop waiting for tomorrow. The ALVAREZ ftness team
would love to come out and help you!

As business grew, Rob assembled the Golf Team in an effort to

Robs experience and aggressive negotiating skills have earned
him every major honour awarded by RE/MAX, including
Presidents Club, 100% Club, Platinum Club, Chairmans Club,

Know the Signs of a Heart Attack When Providing Senior Care
By the time a person reaches the age of 80, the hearts resting capacity has been cut in half. It is also important to
know who is most at risk of a heart attack and when:
The risk for men increases around age 45, and the first heart attack happens at an average age of 66;
The risk for women increases around age 55, and the first heart attack happens at an average age of 70.
How Does a Heart Attack Occur?
It is also important to know how a heart attack happens, in addition to recognizing the signs.
An attack starts when the cardiac arteries are not getting enough oxygen. When the supply of oxygen becomes
unsteady even for a moment, the heart tissue can become damaged. The heartbeat can become irregular or one can
experience complete cardiac arrest, which is not the same as a heart attack but is sometimes caused by the attack.
When the arteries become constricted with plaque or cholesterol buildup, a fibrous cap can cover the plaque so that it
does not rupture and block the artery. If the pressure becomes too great, the plaque ruptures and causes the cells to
die.
Physical Signs a Senior May Exhibit Before or During a Heart Attack
The most common image one may have when picturing a heart attack victim is a person clutching his or her chest
while falling to the floor. However, a heart attack usually does not progress this way. A person experiencing a heart
attack may first feel some discomfort in the chest that feels like fullness, heaviness, pain or pressure. This sensation
can last for a while then go away, but it can also return.
There can also be pain in the upper part of the body including the arms, back, jaw, neck and stomach. Victims who feel
shortness of breath may or may not feel any of this pain, but they could experience other signs like dizziness, nausea
or sudden cold sweats.
Someone providing senior care should also know that men and women can experience symptoms differently. For
instance, women are more likely to feel the discomfort or pain in the chest as well as the lesser known symptoms
including shortness of breath, back and jaw pain and nausea.
The caregiver should not wait more than five minutes to call 911 if a senior experiences chest discomfort, especially if
it is accompanied by any of the other symptoms. Trained professionals can revive someone whose heart has stopped
and give proper treatment upon arrival at the hospital.

Although it is important for everyone to have some heart attack awareness, it
is very important that seniors in particular know the signs of a heart attack.
In addition, those who provide home care need to know what to look for.
When providing senior care, it is important that healthcare providers under-
stand why seniors are vulnerable to heart attacks.
Why Do Seniors Experience Heart Attacks?
Heart attacks are a part of heart disease that is more likely to affect seniors.
This is due to a few age related factors:
The heart starts to lose pumping power
Accumulation of plaque within arteries
Activity becomes more difficult which weakens the heart

Lets face it, Canada is getting older. Right now, the
number of Canadians aged 65 and over will rise sharply over the
next two decades due to the aging of the baby boomers and longer
life expectancy. By 2030, seniors will represent close to 25 percent
of our population, compared with about 14 percent in 2010. In that
same time period, the working-age population will barely grow at
all. This will create increased demands for programs and services
for seniors, supported by a working-age population that will remain
relatively fat.
The OAS program, in its current form, is unsustainable. OAS annual
expenditures are projected to increase from approximately $38
billion in 2011 to $108 billion by 2030. Today, 13 cents of every
federal tax dollar is spent on OAS benefts. If no changes are made,
by 2030-31, this spending is projected to increase to 21 cents of
every federal tax dollar. Action is required now to ensure that the
OAS program remains strong for future generations and those who
need it most.
In last months federal budget, the government introduced planned
changes to the retirement income system. It says this is to ensure that
future generations have a solid OAS program that is sustainable for
the long-term. Seniors who are current OAS and GIS benefciaries
will not lose a cent, and will not be affected. The government plans to
gradually raise the age of eligibility for OAS by two years, beginning
on April 1, 2023. The advance notifcation and phase-in period will
give Canadians time to plan and prepare for their retirement and
minimize the impact on vulnerable groups. People aged 54 or older
on March 31, 2012 (born on or before March 31, 1958) will still be
eligible for their OAS pension or GIS at the age of 65. Additionally,
starting in January 2013, the government will start to proactively
enroll many seniors for OAS and GIS. This measure will reduce
the burden on seniors of completing application processes and
will reduce the Governments administrative costs. Starting in July
2013, a new voluntary deferral of the OAS pension will allow people
to delay receiving their OAS pension by up to fve years in exchange
for an enhanced monthly pension.
The government will amend some federal income support programs
that currently end at age 65 to protect recipients coverage further
to the proposed change to the OAS eligibility age. This includes
disability benefts for injured and ill veterans and for low-income
First Nations seniors on reserve. The CPP and the OAS are two
separate programs: the CPP will not be changed as it is fnancially
sustainable.
This proposed legislative change to the age of OAS/GIS eligibility
will not affect anyone who is 54 years of age or older as of March 31,
2012. Thus, individuals who were born on March 31, 1958 or earlier
will not be affected. Those who were born on or after February 1,
1962 will have an age of eligibility of 67.
Those who were born between April 1, 1958 and January 31, 1962
will have an age of eligibility between 65 and 67. For example, as
shown in Table 4.2, someone born in April 1960 will be eligible for
OAS/GIS at age 66 and one month.

TESTIMONIAL -- LEAHS STORY
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 20 years ago. I was prescribed standard pain medications. For many years before
planning anything I would have to wait and see how I was feeling. While skating backwards, I fell hard and hurt my shoulder, neck and banged my
head. By the time I got home, I could hardly turn my head. I tried to take care of the problem at home. However, the pain and stiness became too
severe over the next week that I could not sleep well. I was examined and xrays were taken to help diagnose my problem and to determine what type
of treatment would be the most benecial for me. Initially, my Chiropractor worked on my neck muscles and adjusted my upper back. I felt so much
better and the stiness and pain had started to subside quickly. This relief was new to me after suering for so many years. The level of pain that I
experience now has decreased immensely and I need less pain medication to function. Every day has improved signicantly.

Healing Hands Beth Cockcroft
When you meet Dr. Darcy Driscoll, You
will be immediately put at ease with
his magnifcent friendly smile. His
straightforward approach makes you feel
comfortable and gain confdence knowing
relief is on the way.
Words like lithe and supple would be so
welcome in describing how we feel, but all
too many of us grumble about being stiff
and sore. Chiropractic care is focused on
re-defning your quality of life and getting
you moving effortlessly without the cringing
discomfort which we often feel at some time
or another.
When Patients come to Chiropractors with
a concern, we like to see a resolution and
turnaround as soon as possible to improve
the comfort and quality of movement.
Some folks live with discomfort and dont
even realize that something is wrong until
they start to feel better
Not everyone can or will beneft
from the use of medication.
Chiropractic care offers an
option to achieve pain free,
effortless motion without the
use of medication. The beneft
of non-invasive therapy is very
appealing to many.
Dr. Driscoll began offering his
chiropractic services in 1998.
He obtained his Honours
Bachelor of Science degree
in 1991 and his Masters of
Science in Medical Biophysics
in 1995 from the University of
Western Ontario. He received
his Doctor of Chiropractic
degree from Parker College
in Texas. Dr. Driscoll has
been ensconced in research
projects and has had many of
his fndings published in peer-
reviewed medical journals. Research has
shown how effective and safe chiropractic
care can be. I am proud to be a part of the
research that demonstrates this.
Many of the symptoms for which people seek
relief are common and often chronic. Foot
and back pain, headaches and neck pain are
widespread. Back Pain alone causes a great
loss to the economy every year. Dr. Driscoll
uses a variety of procedures (active soft tissue
massage, electrical therapy, laser therapy,
adjustments, exercise and stretching) to
achieve the mobility and fexibility which
helps so many of his patients.
Falls are another leading cause of mobility
reduction among North Americans. Being
proactive is a big part of the chiropractic
philosophy: as we age, our ability to balance
and our agility lessens. Proper balance and
ease of motion of joints will often bring
relief. Dr. Driscoll encourages strength
and balance to avoid the falls. Strong
healthy muscles help you regain your poise
quickly if you stumble, thus avoiding the
complications that could accumulate if you
do become injured.
Neck pain and headaches are often a cause of
poor habits and posturing as we hunch over
our keyboards and slouch our way through
life. Chiropractic care offers non-invasive
solutions to correct and remedy the habits
that cause our discomfort leading to healthy
and pain free everyday living.
You can meet with Dr. Driscoll, at either
location where he is available 6 days a week.
Early morning and weekend appointments
are available to accommodate almost any
schedule. The services of a Chiropractor
are most often fully or partially covered by
extended health care plans.

The Eyes Have It Paul Speer and Blair Burgess
When eyeglasses were invented centuries ago, they were to help you
see better.
But when you purchase them from Speer Opticians, youll also look
eye incredible -- thanks to the popular retailers comprehensive
inventory of unique frames designed by the worlds most creative
artisans.
We make customers look great by shying away from generic name
brands and selecting tailor-ftting glasses that highlight their best
features, explains Paul Speer, who founded the St. Catharines
business in 1978. Speer Opticians provides eyewear that is
known for beauty in design, clarity in sight, comfort in feel, and
competitiveness in price. Our specialty is to fnd the perfect frame
for your face.
Located on Ontario Street just north of the QEW, Speer Opticians
caters to an ever-growing base of customers throughout Southern
Ontario and Western New York people who, according to Mr.
Speer, value the impact their glasses convey and appreciate the
comfort that quality craftsmanship creates.
A trained licensed optician, Mr. Speer says customers who shop
for eyewear and sunglasses at his spacious, beautifully designed
studio can expect a wow sales and service experience. We listen
to your optical wants and needs, match them with your features and
lifestyle, and respect your pocketbook.
With a customer service-oriented staff of four, Speer Opticians offers
one-on-one service that is never rushed. The aim is simple: to fnd
the perfect frame no matter how long it takes. Eye examinations can
be arranged through a nearby optometrist.
He remarks that Speer Opticians is the answer for customers who
want more from their eyewear experience. Were here to help you
meet your eyewear potential. Very few opticals in Canada can equal
our display of frames.
He attends two prestigious European optical shows each year to
stock his shop with eyewear that is guaranteed to give his clients a
more exclusive look.
I meet the most creative designers and manufacturers in the
industry, Mr. Speer explains. We enjoy the challenge of presenting
this incredible talent to the marketplace. If youre after the latest
and greatest, weve got it. We dont just sell the same frames over
and over again.
He asserts: We introduced the Andres Herrlicht line to Canada.
Herrlichts frames are fashioned completely out of wood using a
piano hinge -- truly a masterpiece. Kirk Originals, a collection we
introduced years ago, is now becoming very popular as Hollywood
celebrities are seen sporting these acrylic glasses in vivid colors.
Grossman frames are made in Germany. This artist customizes
the frames by creating one-of-a-kind pieces according to a selected
color theme.
IC Berlin is a line that has been highly successful for us. These
glasses made from stainless steel have patented hinges that dont
require screws. For sun lovers, we have Kaenon sunglasses. You
cant beat the quality and price point of their polarized lenses, which
also have the best warranty in the business.
The store carries more than 25 lines of breathtaking eyewear
ranging from Chanel to Lindberg. This makes his shop one of the
frst in North America to bring such a stunning selection to the
marketplace.
In our shop you dont have to settle for anything. Well fnd you the
perfect frame to ft your face, Mr. Speer says, observing that the
business continues to grow through word-of-mouth referrals from
customers who tell family, friends and colleagues that their eyewear
is so distinctive it makes them feel like celebrities.
He assures that chic styles and quality workmanship ensure eyewear
from Speer Opticians is worth the investment. When you spend a
bit more up front, the dividends are absolutely incredible. We set
the precedent for fashion and style.
Its obvious Mr. Speer puts his heart and soul into a profession he
absolutely loves. His commitment and attention to detail can be
immediately discerned by the inviting layout of his shop and the
warm professionalism he conveys.
I eat, drink, and sleep eyeglasses, he ends, smiling.

Protecting your assets from health-related risks
While nearly nine out of ten (89%) Canadians have had a friend or
relative suffer a critical illness such as heart attack or cancer, almost
half have no plan in place to cover the high costs and loss of income
associated with a serious health issue. Even among those 35 or older
- the most vulnerable age group - about 40 per cent do not have a
contingency in their fnancial plan for a critical illness*.
Your fnancial health is the last thing you need to worry about while
dealing with a serious illness. But how would you survive fnancially?
More than half of Canadians (54%) surveyed said theyd use their
personal savings, investments and retirement funds to cover these
costs, while another 17 per cent said they would mortgage their
home*. With this approach, it may take years to recoup the assets
and could delay retirement by years.
What can you do?
Health insurance products like critical illness insurance and long
term care insurance may provide the funds you need for the fnancial
challenges associated with a serious illness or ageing.
Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum beneft following the
diagnosis of a covered illness. The money can be used, at your
discretion, to pay down debt, access medical treatment not covered
by provincial plans, take care of out-of-pocket expenses, or for
personal use.
Long term care insurance provides a weekly income beneft
when an individual needs substantial physical assistance from
another person to perform two or more of the six activities of daily
living (e.g. bathing and dressing), or requires continual supervision
because of deteriorated mental abilities. The beneft can be used for
any purpose, from hiring a private nurse, to compensating a family
member who leaves a job to provide care, or paying for the cost of a
long term care facility.
Dont let a serious health issue compromise your fnancial future.

and long term care insurance can ft into your fnancial plan. If youd

Plant & Rake Without the Ache
Gardening and yard workis deceptively strenuous. In a recent
poll, 88 per cent of Ontario chiropractors indicated that working in the garden and
yard were the most common sources of neck and back pain they treat during the
warm weather season.
To help you enjoy the fruits of your labour during this yard and gardening season, we
recommend you keep these tips in mind:
Stretch before you head out. Take the time to prepare your body for activity; always
warm-up and cool down your muscles. Add a short walk and youll have topped off
your routine with overall conditioning. Now youre ready for your open-air workout.
THE RIGHT MOVES
Using the right moves can go a long way to enabling you to plant and rake without
the ache. Positioning your body correctly reduces strain on muscles and joints.
LIFT RIGHT
Make sure your back is straight. And always bend your knees. Carry the load close to
your body. Avoid heavy lifting immediately after bending or kneeling.
KNEEL TO PLANT
Use knee pads or a kneeling mat to reduce the strain while you plant and weed. Keep
your back straight and stop frequently to take a break.
RAKE RIGHT
Ease the strain on your back by putting one leg in front, the other behind. Switch legs
and hands from time to time.
ALTERNATE
Heavy. Light. Heavy. Light. Thats the right way to handle those chores.
CHANGE HANDS
Take the strain off by changing the position of your hands.
CHECK YOUR POSITION
And change it often. Kneel. Then stand. Or simply sit and relax for a while.
THE RIGHT TOOLS
Choose tools that are ergonomically designed, with padded handles and spring
action. Make sure the size and weight are right for you. And always choose the proper
tool for the job.
Here are a few more tips to lighten your load:
a hose is easier to manage than a watering can
a good cart, or dolly, makes moving heavier loads a breeze
a wheelbarrow that is lightweight and has two wheels is a good idea
separate a larger load into several small ones
select comfortable, thick soled, supportive shoes
cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, wear gloves and sunscreen
use ergonomically designed, long handled, lightweight tools
Dont forget to get-up, move around, alternate tasks, repeat your stretch routine, or
sit back, relax, and have a cool drink. Try not to overexert yourself, and take three
brief breaks at least once every hour. Give yourself a breather ... your back will thank
you!
If you have back or muscle pain that lasts more than 48-hours without
improvement, visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors play an important role
in providing preventative education and early detection of spinal
problems, as well as providing expert care for back, muscle, joint pain
and injury.

Getting the Most out of Your Vehicle Gary Archer
At Garys Maintenance we are dedicated to
keeping your car on the road for the longest period of time at the
lowest possible operating cost. This is achieved by preventative
maintenance. Every system in your vehicle has recommended
service intervals and by adhering to these factory recommendations,
you can achieve the longest possible lifespan with the least amount
of cost.
Cars today are very technologically
advanced from even 10 years ago. All
service intervals are listed in your
owners manual. Have you ever read it?
If youre like most people, you probably
havent. You depend on your service
provider to make recommendations
and unfortunately in todays fast paced
environment, we sometimes overlook
the routine procedures because we are dealing with an emergency/
breakdown.
Probably the most important thing I insist on is regular oil changes.
We expect to see the average customer 3 to 4 times a year based on
their driving habits. You are probably aware of the old rule of thumb
that says to change oil and flter at 3000 miles or 5000 kilometers
or every 3 months, whichever comes frst. Some manufacturers have
extended that to 8000 kms or more under the right conditions.
If you look at your owners manual you will see 2 different service
schedules. One for light duty and the other for severe duty service.
What most people do not understand is that severe duty includes
stop and go city driving, short trips, towing or hauling, hot, cold
and dusty conditions. Just the type of use most people subject their
cars to! Even if you only travel 5000 kms a year I recommend 2 oil
changes a year. Why? In 2 words; oil sludge. This turns your oil into
a thick jelly like consistency that blocks oil passages and prevents
the oil from lubricating vital engine components.
Sludge is caused by several factors, the main culprit being time.
Oil is contaminated by exhaust gasses and water that is created by
condensation inside your engine. This problem is aggravated by
the short trips and errands we run. Even a few minutes of highway
driving allows the oil to heat up enough to boil away many of these
contaminants. After as little as 2 visits to our facility, we can start to
develop a service schedule tailored to your individual driving habits.
At each visit, we can then provide a list of maintenance items that
should have been performed or still need to be done on your vehicle,
based on its age and current mileage.
Please call (905) 934-0444 and let us discuss a personalized service
plan for your vehicle.

Even after so many generations
there is a need for closure. One hundred years ago, the celebrated
unsinkable ship Titanic suffered her wretched demise and the sad
story is never forgotten.
On Sunday April 8, the Cruise ship Balmoral set sail from
Southampton, England on a memorial voyage replicating the route
of the Titanic. The Cruise recreated the crossing and offered to
passengers a taste and sample of what it would have been like to
have been aboard the grand vessel. Replicate menus, costumes and
the timing of it all comprised the itinerary of the memorial voyage.
The Ship carried 1309 souls, the same number as were aboard
Titanic. About 35 of the passengers aboard Balmoral were relatives
of Titanics passengers, both those who survived and those who
perished. The rest were Titanic enthusiasts and historians.
Niagara Falls natives Jeff Wallis, and his brother Tim, were among
the passengers on the Balmoral, which sailed from the dock amidst
much fanfare and pageantry, as did Titanic a hundred years ago.
The brothers were decked in long coats and top hats complete with
walking sticks. My brother, Tim, who organized the entire trek,
was the one who brought the canes. His had a gold topper and mine
was silver, just a reminder of who is running the show. he quipped.
There is an ever present affable rivalry between these very close
brothers. Both have an extraordinary sense of humour. Tim had
packed several pounds of Lifesaver candies which he handed out
aboard the ship.
This is a very solemn occasion, but relief is needed to keep moods
in check, said Jeff. Ironically, many of the British passengers had
never heard of the candies, but laughed just the same. The brothers
wanted to memorialize their Great Grandmother who perished in
the tragedy. Catherine Jane Wallis had been a crew member aboard
the doomed vessel. Catherine, a mother of four had been a widow
eight short months when she boarded for the maiden voyage. Hired
as nursing staff to attend to the third class passengers throughout
the voyage, she needed to support her children, whom she had left
in the care of an aunt in Southampton, her hometown.
On April 15th 2012 the Balmoral arrived at the gravesite of Titanic:
Position 414357N, 495649W in the north Atlantic. The sea was
calm and the chilly air nipped fngers and cheeks. At 2:20 am, a
solemn service was held in memoriam for those who had perished.
The mood was an odd mix of sadness and celebration of life. What
happened cannot be changed, but we must go on and learn from our
human arrogance.
Eyewitness accounts of the fateful night (put forth from the inquest
which followed) claim that Catherine made it to the lifeboats, but
returned for her papers and was never seen again. With no solid
facts to go on, the family had assumed Catherine was buried in
grave number 281 in Halifax. They had always wondered but
never knew for sure. One of Catherines nieces, Joan Allison, had
devoted a decade of her life to promote the use of DNA testing for
identifcation of the victims buried in Halifax.
Sadly, Joan passed away on April 15, 2006, 94 years to the day the
Titanic sank and did not live to see her mission accomplished. The
end results however, did not place Catherine in the Halifax Grave.
The family now knows she rests at the bottom of the sea with so
many others from that fateful night.
In an act of respect for human life, Jeff and Tim had a small silver
cross created with Catherines name engraved on one side and her
niece Joans on the other. With a moment of silence and a prayer for
peace and closure, the brothers paid their respects as the cross was
swept into a wave.
It (the wave) swept it away like a hand reaching for a rightful
object, said Jeff. Family history, no matter how heartrending,
needs to be acknowledged. We both felt we had done the right thing
for our Great Grandmother and could fnally know she was resting
in peace.
The sea has a mind and power of its own, not to be disrespected.

Its a dream many have to become homeowners. But it isnt always
as easy as it may seem. Thats where utilizing the services a real
estate lawyer early in the process can help ensure peace of mind.
If you do not have a real estate agent and are looking to submit
or entertain an offer to purchase it is important that you retain a
lawyer in order to prepare an offer and agreement, explained real
estate lawyer Jonathon Dick. The propertys legal description, HST,
deposit, fnancing, type of ownership and home inspection are just
some of the considerations that your lawyer will review with you.
If you have a real estate agent, they will ask who your lawyer is
typically for the purpose of closing the transaction.
Title searches, title insurance, mortgage and deed preparation,
closing funds, keys and closing documentation are all aspects of the
transaction that are dealt with by your lawyer, said Dick.
Thats why its so important to retain the services of someone with
expertise in real estate. Lawyers who practice real estate in Ontario
are required to carry extra liability insurance coverage and they
typically dedicate a majority of their practice to real estate law.
Not all lawyers practice real estate. For example, some work solely
in civil litigation or criminal law. A real estate lawyer is someone who
stays current with the laws and procedures relating to contracts,
local by-laws, succession law and legislation related to real estate,
Dick explained. At times, title issues can be quite complex and
require specifc expertise to handle such problems properly.
A real estate lawyer is trained to advise and raise questions or
concerns that you may not have thought about.
Dicks best advice when deciding to retain a real estate lawyer is to
- if possible, speak to the lawyer directly.
You want to make sure your fle is important and handled personally
as much as possible. Also, get an idea of what your closing costs
will be. Ask questions like, What is your fee? Approximately how
much will my disbursements be and what is included? What is Land
Transfer Tax and how much is it? What is title insurance? Dick
said. Some clients choose a lawyer based on who they believe will
charge the lowest fee, thinking that real estate is straight forward
and doesnt require strong representation. Believe me; its not
always that simple. So make sure you have an expert in your corner.

Prisoner of Tehran (The End of Childhood in Iran)
By Marina Nemat
This book really opens your eyes
to the tragic, life changing events
that happened when the Iranian
Revolution hit in 1979.
Marina was just 16 when she was
arrested by the police for complaining
about math classes being replaced by
Islamic studies.
Torture, fear and hunger became her
life until she was saved by a prison
guard from the fring squad. This was
not always a blessing for Marina.
While reading about Marina I had to
ask myself over and over again What
would I do and how would I cope with the same situations? No
answer came to me because I have never had to suffer mentally or
physically so all I could do was live Marinas life with her and share
her pain and her successes.
Take a step into Marinas story and you will count your blessings
and rejoice that she is now free and happy in Canada.
Look Again
by Lisa Scottoline
This was my frst reading of Lisa Scottoline
and I must say Look Again had me right
from the beginning. Ellen (a mother of an
adopted child) keeps you on the edge of your
seat while she struggles with a decision she
has to make about a child she has raised and
loves and the strong moral values she feels
she must listen to.
I found that I was struggling to decide if I
could do the right thing or hope that the
truth was never discovered. I felt Ellens
pain, confusion, and struggle to do what she had to do all the way to
the end of this exciting book.
As a mother I know that this struggle was because Ellen felt the pain
that her sons real mother felt and she could not hide the truth.
The tragic reality that this could really happen is felt so deeply while
reading Look Again that even once you have read the last page you
think about the book many times in the following weeks.
I would recommend this book and look forward to reading another
of Lisa Scottolines novels.

(NC)The dream for
many of us has always
been to retire early.
We imagine it will be a
time to spend summer
days on the golf course,
a time for catching up
on reading and a time
to escape the Canadian
winters for the warmth
of the south. Sounds
like the life of a retiree,
but in recent years a
growing trend is to delay retirement for a few more years in the
workplace.
Traditionally the age of retirement has been 65. Today, its common
to see people working until they are forced into retirement by their
company, or until they choose to do so for health reasons.
Many people are living longer and enjoying healthier active lives,
, explains Christopher Lundstrm, the executive director for
Doro, North America, a Swedish telecommunications company
and a global leader in the design of smart, easy-to-use phones.
This naturally affects the age that seniors are ready to retire.
As the average Canadian lifespan increases, it is inevitable that the
workplace will include more workers over the age of 65. For many
eligible retirees, work is a necessity to compensate for pension
short-falls, while others see their careers as what defnes them
and they choose to remain in the workforce to stay busy and keep
social. Seniors are a valuable resource as they bring a strong work
ethic and hold a lifes worth of experience.
One of the challenges seniors face by remaining in the workplace
is the continuous change in technology. Understanding the
needs of seniors in a fast-paced work environment has created
a demand for easy-to-use alternatives to advanced technology
devices. Lundstrm points out that Doro makes phones that are
user friendly while allowing seniors to stay connected to their
colleagues and employer.
Designing user-friendly cell phones for seniors is the focus of our
company, he explained. We create products that active seniors
are comfortable using to help them stay connected and in the
workforce.
Canadian companies continue to adapt their workplaces to
create senior friendly environments. This includes offering fex-
schedules, part-time positions and learning seminarsand
as the baby boomer generation alters the age of retirement,
Lundstrm believes we will see more companies moving towards
more inclusive workplaces, focused on the talents of multiple
generations.
Theres no quitting for many seniors over 65

The Power of Yes Wendy Bodner Matthews
Not all of us go through life on the positive side. I for many years
was one of them. You know the Negative Neds, those people that
are always complaining how someone wronged them or how they
were ripped off or one of those people that point out everyone elses
faws. Yep that was me I thought the entire worlds mission was to
make my life miserable.
Life was pretty dark for me at that time. It wasnt a great place to
be but it was what I had known for so long. It was easier to stay in
that negative state and wallow in the darkness. The longer I lived
there in that bleak life saying no to everything the more friends and
family stayed away.
Life was getting lonely. One day standing in line for coffee the man
in front of me was going on and on about how horrible the staff
there was and how the people in front of us were just as stupid
because they werent prepared with their order by the time they got
to the counter. I looked at him and agreed with a nod. But in my
head I thought, is that what I sound like? I actually knew that is
what I sounded like because I had said those very words just the
week before. My, no wonder no one wanted to spend any time with
me. Over the next few weeks I started to take notice of how my
thoughts, what I said and the reactions that I had were affecting
people. I decided that I needed to make some changes. I had to
start putting a positive spin on my life and thoughts. As I started
doing this I realized that I was in control of my reactions and that
I was responsible for the challenges that went on with my life. My
next act was to start saying yes to things. I started by saying yes to
invitations, yes to offers, yes to me and then fnally yes to life.
I had not worked for a long period of time but with this shift in
thinking I actually said yes to going back to school. When I quit high
school so many years I go I never thought I would have been back
but there I was and I loved it. I enjoyed being challenged, learning
new things and interacting with people. I then said yes to work.
With all these positive things going on in my life it was no wonder
what happened next. I then said yes to becoming self-employed and
saying yes to starting a business called Happy Being Me.
Life is amazing now, I get to work, live and play in Happiness! This
transformation was not an overnight process it actually took a few
years but it was worth it and it is possible. How amazing that these
three little letters could change a life and how drastically a life can
change from the Power of Yes.

Grimsby Benevolent Fund Julia McLaren
The word benevolent comes from the Latin bene well and volent
from the verb to wish, which would suggest the word benevolent
brings nothing but good wishes. A benevolent society is an organized
group of people who have come together to serve a community
through programs, donations and good will.
In 1965,a wonderful man named Mike Barretto, motivated by
concern, understanding and generosity, recognized a need in the town
of Grimsby and with the cooperation of local churches and service
groups, set about to help those in need. From its humble beginnings
as a Christmas Hamper program, the Grimsby Benevolent Fund has
grown to encompass a retail outlet, a food bank, fnancial counselling,
nutritional advice and so much more.
Forty years later, Mr. Barrettos dream of helping the less fortunate
and those who have fallen on diffcult times has not only been realized,
but is in fact, a successful not for proft business that is operated by a
Board of Directors, a brilliant staff and a plethora of volunteers.
Last November marked the frst anniversary of the new structure
from which GBF operates. The old IGA in the centre of Grimsby has
been transformed into a superb facility. The day I visited I thought
I was at an arena and a playoff game was scheduled as the parking
lot was full and there was a virtual beehive of activity, both inside
and outside the building. People were walking to their cars carrying
numerous bags and everywhere I looked, people were happy.
Once inside the retail store, one is immediately taken with how
incredibly well items are organized. Clothing, furniture, appliances,
household goods are neatly and cleanly arranged with prices well
marked. All appliances and electronics are tested prior to going on
the shelf to ensure they are in good working order. Volunteers can
be seen all over the shop picking up misplaced articles, straightening
clothing, talking to customers and generally being helpful and very
pleasant. Behind the scenes there are even more volunteers ranging
from high school students through seniors. They all have a common
interest and that is the selfess act of kindness and support for their
community.
The retail store is the tip of a very large iceberg, however, it is essential
as it is one of twhe largest contributors of funds that make the oh so
important and ever so necessary food bank possible.
The food bank is literally a small grocery store that contains the basic
necessities of everyday living. Once again this writer was astounded
at the extent to which the GBF goes in order to meet the needs of
the community. I noticed a large number of hygiene products like
shampoo, soap, razors, detergent, and diapers. There is fresh
produce, frozen foods and baked goods available for GBF clients.
No one ever thinks that there may be a time they may be dependent
on the good will of others and one of the most diffcult thing they
will ever do is walk in the door of GBF and say they need help. The
staff of GBF are trained, compassionate and intelligent people who
are there to help. Clients circumstances and needs are assessed,
counseling is offered. All discussions and client information is held
in the strictest of confdence.
I cannot overstate the remarkable work that is being performed
by the GBF. This is a not for proft registered charity receiving no
government funding and yet they continue to feed and clothe literally
hundreds and hundreds of people every year. Let me give you just a
couple examples of the extras:
Through the cooperation and generosity of Hamilton Beech, recently
GBF was able to purchase 240 Crock Pots. These appliances were
given to those families in need and each month a recipe is produced
using products that may be found in the food bank.
For the School Back Pack program, children are supplied with back
packs complete with all the necessities for learning, pens, binders,
workbooks and so much more.
I would like to thank Jamie Stevens, Chairman of the Board of
Directors and Stacy Elia, executive Director for the informative and
inspirational tour of GBF. When asked what is it they need most,
both Stacy and Jamie replied that while they are always in need of
goods and funds to assist others, what they would really like is for
those in the town of Grimsby who are in need, to come to GBF and
become a part of their community.

Real Estate Agents: In Your Best Interest Beth Cockcroft
What are the qualities you most value in a real estate representative?
Most will agree: Trust and Comfort. You will spend many hours
working with your agent: This is the comfort zone. You will be
making a very large purchase: This is the Trust zone.
If you have never bought or sold a house, you cannot imagine the
emotions tied to the transaction. Whether you are the buyer or the
seller, you will ride the roller coaster of elation and anxiety.
The day your house is placed on the market, is the day you open
the doors to the public. Your sanctuary is laid bare. Many will
be touring and examining. Some are just curious, others are
serious. They will be peeking into your closets, poking through
your basement, examining your attic. Some will scrutinize the
way you have your furniture laid out. Others will pass comments
about the art you have on the walls, the quality of the paint job,
and the colour of carpet you chose. All the while attempting to
place themselves into your space, attempting to envision how
they would place their own belongings. They are peering into your
world. They may love or criticize your home all at once. This is
where the need to place a representative between you and the
shoppers becomes strongly apparent.
Because of the emotion involved the purchase or selling of a home,
the real job of the agent is to be the buffer between the buyer and
the seller. This is how Susan Dick describes her function as an
agent. Once , early in my career, when my own property was on
the market, I was surprised at my responses to some of the probing
and questions the buyers put forth. I referred to a colleague to
manage the barrage of questions which are suddenly surprising
and unnerving when you are involved in the transaction.
While knowledge of the construction and renovation aspect of
residential housing is a given in the profession, passion for homes
is apparent in Susans demeanour. She simply loves houses as
she puts it. Susan has bought and sold several on a personal level
over the years. Some she has built, others were existing homes
which were renovated with a vision. I like to keep the original
style of the home in mind during the renovation. While renovating
a 1950s cottage, I respected the unique character and maintained
the original charm while refurbishing to todays lifestyle and
needs
Susan expressed that she only shares her visions with her clients
when they are in need of guidance or encouragement. She prefers
to stand back and lets her clients get a feel for the home on their
own terms.
During the period when you are involved in a deal you will go
to bed each night wondering. Will the deal go through? Will they
accept our offer? Will we actually be moving? Having been an
agent for 17 years in the Niagara Region, Susan understands all
of this and is here to help make your roller coaster ride as smooth
as possible.

Over the last 3 years the Rotary club of
Niagara-on-the-Lake have run Passion: a
wine & food extravaganza in late August to
fund their charitable programs.
One major commitment was to help fund the
new Walker Cancer Centre. Unfortunately
Passion did not ft the model required by the
club so the event was terminated.
Ted Van Der Zalm the founder of Wells
of Hope saw the potential and requested
that Rotary turn the event over to his
organization. With the help of key members
of Rotary a smooth take over took place in
March 2012. Tonie Mori made a generous
contribution to the transition by offering to
continue hosting the event at Mori Gardens.
Tonie further agreed to join the organizing
committee bringing her years of experience

event.
This year the event will run on July 27 from
6.30pm to 10.00pm. The experience gained
by the Wells of Hope committee members
running a similar event Taste & See helped in
determining a shift in the event to July 27th
a month earlier, thus making it an evening
event from 6.30pm to 10.00pm. As an added
incentive, the ticket price has been lowered
to $75.00 per person. This price includes
admission, a free glass and plate notched
to hold the glass, plus tasting from over 40
top class food and wine vendors: there are
no tickets or tokens to purchase after you
enter the event, everything is included. Also
included is free parking with a shuttle to the
Gardens plus a separate free return shuttle
from behind the court house downtown.
Members from the original Rotary
committee have made a contribution acting
as a guiding source to ensure continuity in
the running of the event.
This year we are anticipating a greater
attendance to enjoy a large selection of great
food and world class wines from across the
Niagara region. Arrangements have been
made with the hospitality industry to offer
packages that include accommodation and
tickets to the event.

mushrooms provide important B Complex Vitamins. These essential
B Vitamins include Thiamin and Niacin, both of which help to
control the release of energy from carbohydrates, fat and protein,
and aid in reducing fatigue.
Mushrooms & Weight Management Studies have shown
that fruits and vegetables may control appetite longer and foods
with higher water content allow you to have larger portions with
the same calorie content. Raw mushrooms are over 90% water and
are a great low-calorie option, which can also be paired with your
favourite low-fat veggie dips. 100 grams of mushrooms are only 25

The Silver Journal
Death is never a pleasant subject and understandably most of
us seek to avoid our own demise by every means at our disposal.
Notwithstanding our own best efforts, by the time many of us
reach our 20s we have already experienced the loss of a loved one,
possibly a grandparent, or in some cases, a parent or sibling. By the
time we reach our 50s or 60s death has almost certainly touched
someone we know or care deeply about and for some, death has been
a frequent if unwelcome visitor among their friends and family.
For some the end comes suddenly, such as when a person suffers
a massive heart attack or stroke but for many, death is a gradual
process often reaching a prolonged critical phase that can last for
an extended period of time. With the achievements of modern
medicine and the skill and speed of emergency medical personnel,
illness or trauma which only a few years ago would have brought
about the prompt demise of an individual, sometimes delays death
in spite of the persons wishes or those of his family. In such cases
the individuals quality of the life may be undesirable or even
intolerable to him and the fnancial and emotional costs beyond
burdensome to his family.
For many years a mixture of medical ethics, law, community norms
and religious beliefs prevented a person from deciding when he
no longer wanted to continue treatment and expire naturally and
physicians and medical personnel were required to exhaust every
means possible to keep the person alive regardless of his desires
or those of his family. To be sure, there were doctors who eased
an old friend and patient on his way and there were those of
every sphere and calling who saw the undesired and undesirable
unnatural continuation of a human life as being cruel or excessive,
but in the main there was no means by which the individual himself
could terminate his care, especially if he was incapable of doing so
himself, due to his medical condition.
During the 1970s many of the laws which had governed end of life
care began to change along with many other things. In the early
years of that decade women in the United States gained the right
to chose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy when the United
States Supreme Court recognized a right to privacy or the right to
control ones own body free of interference by the state. It was only
a short legal jump from there to the right to withhold consent to life
saving treatment in cases where the treatment only prolonged the
moment of death. In the absence of a common law model, the state
legislatures in the United States and the provincial governments
in Canada began enacting laws which served not only to permit
individuals to make end of life decisions but also to free doctors
and health care providers from the fear of prosecution, litigation
or professional discipline as a result of following their patients
instructions. The effort which began in the 1970s has resulted in
very state and province in North America now made some provision
for allowing end of life decisions by individuals.
Generally speaking, there are three types of legal instruments by
which end of life decisions may be expressed with binding effect.
These vary somewhat by jurisdiction and readers are urged to
consult with qualifed legal counsel for assistance in preparing
documents which are effective under the applicable law. In some
jurisdictions the legislative bodies have promulgated simple forms
which may be downloaded from governmental websites and while
somewhat limited in the scope, are effective if executed with the
prescribed formalities.
The documents through which end of life decisions may be
expressed are those which are directed by the individual to his
physician (Directive to Physicians or Living Will); those which
are directed to an individual who is authorized to act on behalf of
the individual if he is incapable of acting for himself (Health Care
Power of Attorney); and those which are directed to physicians
and health care providers after the onset of a fatal disease (DNR
Order).
A Directive to Physicians is exactly what its title implies. Such a
directive, in proper form and executed in accordance with the legal
requirements, simply expresses the patients desires with respect
to lifesaving care if the patient is in a terminal condition. The
individual executing such a document must not be a minor nor be
suffering from diminished legal capacity as ordered by a court. If an
individual has already been diagnosed with a terminal illness and
the physician believes the patient is in a morbid state of depression
or incompetent due to heavy pain medication he may decline to
accept the directive or act on it out of personal or ethical concerns.
Care should be taken to execute a directive while in reasonably
good health such as at the time a person executes a will. Most such
documents describe what a terminal condition is or make reference
to a statutory defnition and state what care is to be provided or
withheld if treatment will only prolong the moment of death and
not change the outcome. Often the forms have boxes which may be
checked with regard to things such as the administration of nutrition
or fuids or whether resort to procedures such as intubation may
be made. All such forms anticipate and the law in general provides
that a physician should use appropriate drugs to keep the patient
comfortable and certainly no caring physician would allow his
patient to suffer needlessly.
One of the practical problems with Directives to Physicians is that
too often the physician never receives a copy of the document
or is not present when the patient arrives as the hospital and
consequently all of the unwanted medical machinery is deployed
as a matter of course in spite of the patients desires. In some
jurisdictions a directive may be given to a hospital or emergency
personnel and made a permanent part of the patients records so
that the appropriate action can be taken when the patient is frst
encountered in a life threatening medical situation. It is almost

certain that if the doctors, hospital and emergency personnel
dont know what the patients desires are, they will do everything
they can whether or not desirable.
A Health Care Power of Attorney is another familiar form of
instrument used in end of life directives. Most jurisdictions now
provide that an individual may appoint someone or several people
to act for them in the event they are incapacitated and cannot
act for themselves. At common law a power of attorney was
ineffective after a person was incapacitated but legislation in most
North American jurisdictions now make such powers of attorney
either continue in effect or become effective on the incapacity of
the person making the appointment. This statutory change to
the common law is referred to by lawyers as giving the powers of
attorney durability and properly drawn powers of attorney with
this feature or known as durable powers of attorney.
While powers of attorney are generally concerned with allowing
another to act for the person appointing an attorney in fact with
respect to an individuals property, in recent years Health Care
Powers of Attorney have become common. In these documents
an individual is a appointed to make health care decisions for an
individual in the event he cant make them himself. The person
making the appointment can specify or limit the health care that
the attorney in fact is authorized to consent to on behalf of the
principal in end of life circumstances. A carefully drafted Health
Care Power of Attorney should specify the care the principal
desires to have at the end of his life in much the same language as
the Directive to Physicians.
By having both a Directive to Physicians and a Health Care Power
of Attorney, the patient has both a belt and suspenders as far as
his end of life care is concerned. If the doctor or hospital dont
have the Directive to Physicians, are unaware of it or have reason
to question its validity, the attorney in fact can legally instruct
them in accordance with his principals wishes.
Do Not Resuscitate Orders or DNR Orders are somewhat different
than either of the end of life documents already discussed. While
DNR Orders are advance directives they are very limited in scope
and can only be executed by individuals who have been diagnosed
with a terminal illness that is likely to claim them within a specifed
period of time, usually six months or so. They usually require one
or more physicians signature or endorsement and have to be
executed with a good deal of formality since there are no second

Are you thinking that even with spring in the air you just cant seem
to shake off the tired body, tired mind syndrome? Are you wishing
you had a new body or one that was younger and had more vitality?
Fact is, you can have more energy and vitality with a few simple steps
that also can help change your stressed mindset to one of optimism
and possibility. Its all about energy. Energy fows where attention
goes so make sure you are noticing where you want your energy to
go. When you begin to pay attention to where youre sending your
energy you will begin to identify and notice where your energy is
being zapped and choose to change outcomes.
Here are three of many tips to consider in revitalizing your life:
Make a written list of tolerations, people, situations, activities that
you dont want to engage in.
-Make a bucket list of things you want to engage in before you die
that excite you, a shopping spree in New York or dinner at the Keg
overlooking the falls or train for a 3 km walk.
Start paying attention to the contrasts of energy when your
tolerations or doing something on your bucket list clash. Even de-
cluttering a closet can bring joy if its been something youve been
putting off
Make a choice to begin shifting away from the things that you are
just tolerating and engage in the things on your bucket list.

If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired and ready to see if
this works, simply try something to shift the way you feel. Begin
by stepping into the least demanding dream on your bucket list.
Depending on the level of your health, that may be a walk around
the block, which you will slowly increase as you begin moving.
No matter where you start, you will soon be energized to do more
because thats the nature of energy; what you focus on grows. The
key is to simply begin.

With an estimated 250 million people worldwide affected by
diabetes, it is a global epidemic and the worlds fourth leading cause
of death. Seven million people develop diabetes each year, and that
number is expected to hit 380 million by 2025.
There is a rise of the disease in the developing world, mainly due
to lifestyle, says Greg Unger, regional director of the Canadian
Diabetes Association Manitoba/Nunavut Region. He adds that in
Manitoba, over 75,000 people have diabetes.
To explain it in a nutshell: your body gets its energy by making
glucose from foods like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, milk and fruit.
But for that it needs insulin, a hormone that helps control the
bloods glucose lev- els. Diabetes is a condition wherein patients
either produce too little insulin, or are resistant to the effects of
insulin. Unger says there are three different kinds: type 1 diabetes,
type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Type 1 is what used to be called juvenile diabetes, and it occurs
when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. There is no known
cause or cure for type 1 diabetes, says Unger. About 10 per cent of
diabetes sufferers are type 1 and require insulin treatment.
Type 2 diabetes (or adult onset diabetes) is when the pancreas cannot
produce enough or make proper use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes can
be delayed, and some say even prevented, at the onset, says Unger.
Man- aging it both before and after you have it is the key through
healthy eating, weight control, and physical activity.
Nevertheless, the number of people with type 2 diabetes is increasing
dramatically due to population aging, rising rates of obesity, genet-
ics and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. We are also seeing type
2
diabetes more and more often in children for the same reason, says
Unger, because of changes in lifestyle.
As well, Unger says people of Hispanic, Asian, South Asian, African,
and Aboriginal descent are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Higher
risk populations have a physical makeup that is pre- disposed to
work differently, so they are getting type 2 diabetes faster and in
higher numbers, says Unger.
Pregnancy can raise the possibility for some women to develop the
temporary condition of gestational diabetes. This occurs in less
than four per cent of the general population, and in eight to 15 per
cent of the Aboriginal population, says Unger. Having GDM can
increase the risk, for
the mother and child, of developing full blown diabetes later.
Diabetes is a life long disease, Unger says. The longer you have
diabetes, the harder it becomes to control it and the possibility of
complications is huge. Eighty per cent of diabetes sufferers will
die of heart dis- ease or stroke. Others will experience kidney
failure, blindness, erectile dysfunction, or nerve damage leading to
amputations.
If you do have diabetes, it is important to educate yourself. Your
best bet is to work with a team of professionals doctors, dietitians,
nutritionists, and physical trainers, says Unger. You dont
necessarily have to go on insulin, and it is possible to turn things
around.

Karlenes Wigs And Hair Extensions
As a licensed hairstylist for over twenty years, the owner of
Karlenes Wigs and Hair Extensions has seen a great need
and want for hair replacement grow over the years. With this
growing need and my own mother dealing with cancer fve years
ago and having to fnd hair replacement, I had this idea that St.
Catharines needs a place where women and men can come in a
and try on wigs in a comfortable relaxing atmosphere and not
necessarily spend a fortune.
I wanted to be able to offer a wide range of styles and prices. Not
everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on hair
replacement especially when they have so many other expenses
and worries during their time of illness. So our prices range
from around $37.00 and up for wigs and hair extensions. Of
course its a not always medical reason that brings people into
Karlenes. Some people just want a change to their look without
having to do so permanently, or just to give their hair a much
needed break from all the chemical services, heat appliances
and environmental stresses that can leave our hair dry, brittle
and feeling lifeless.
You might not need to do a whole new look, so we also offer hair
extensions that are so popular (all the actresses and actors wear
them) that can add volume and length to your existing hair. We
also carry a wide range of add on hairpieces for ponytails, clip
on bangs and clip in highlights. If we do not have it in stock we
can also order it in within a few days.
Another exciting product at Karlenes is a cosmetic line for
thinning hair. Shampoo, hair serum and keratin thickening
fbres. These precision cut microscopic hair fbres bind to
your existing hair, producing thicker denser hair. They come in
8 different colours and is made right here in Canada!
It used to be a hush hush thing to wear wigs, not so
anymore. Wigs and hair extensions are so popular nowadays
due to celebrities who wear them not only for movies, but also
in their everyday lives. If the greatest actors and actresses in the
world are wearing wigs and hair extensions, then why not you!

(NC) Canadas favourite hockey dad, Walter Gretzky, knows how
important it is to stay healthy and activeespecially as we get older.
Just because youre over 60, doesnt mean you cant be in great
shape, he says.
The great thing about retirement is that you have the time to get
in the exercise you need, just by going about your daily chores or
making exercise part of your life, he continued. There are countless
benefts to exercising, even if its only a few times a week.
Take a look at Gretzkys health and ftness tips for seniors:
Talk to your doctor: No matter what your age is, you should
always consult your doctor before you start any type of ftness
regime. Ensure you are in good health and know your limitations.
Make a date: One of the best ways to ensure you keep with your
program, at any age, is to exercise with a buddy. Make a date with
a friend three times a week to head out for a brisk walk, 30 to 45
minutes is ideal.
Incorporate household and outdoor chores: Gardening
and chores around the house can get your heart pumping. Pulling
weeds, mowing the lawn and vacuuming get you moving.
Walk it off: Park in one of the furthest spots when you go to the
grocery store, or the mallor leave the car at home all together.
Doro, a company that makes cell phones specifcally for seniors,
suggests always bringing your cell phone with you when you go for
a walkespecially if you are by yourself.
Hop in the pool: Swimming is a great, low-
impact way to stay active. Many community
centres such as the YMCA offer water
aerobics classes on a daily basis. If arthritis
is a problem that stops you from enjoying
certain exercises, a pool is a great alternative.
Put on your dancing shoes: Aerobic
dance classes are a fun way to stay active and
are great exerciseas long as you dont get
too fancy and start jumping and jiving. Know
your limitsif you are working out in a class,
simply skip the jumps and march on the spot
until the next move.
Dont forget the strength training:
To keep your bones and joints healthy and
strong, dont forget to incorporate some
strength training into your exercise routine.
You can use free weights or elastic resistance
bands and perform the moves right in your
own living room.
Make it fun: This is the most important thing to remember. We
all know exercising can be a bit of a chore sometimes, but if you do
something you enjoy, you are more likely to stick with it.

(NC)We tend to pick up bacteria by being outdoors in the summer,
and eating al fresco can pose health hazards as well. Before you
know it, you can pick-up a food borne illness by eating a burger
or potato salad that has been out too long or grazed by a fy. It is
estimated that house fies carry around 1,941,000 different kinds of
bacteria. If they come into contact with food, it may have an adverse
impact on health.
Can a probiotic a day can keep the doctor and bad bacteria away?
Absolutely, says naturopath Dr. Brenda Watson, who believes that
probiotics are the new multivitamin.
Dr. Watson advises, Probiotics are crucial for supporting the
immune system, balance intestinal environments and inhibit growth
of pathogenic organisms, she says, pointing out that the digestive
tract plays a major role in the strength of the immune system.
Probiotics are friendly, benefcial bacteria, which are normal
inhabitants of the large and small intestines. These bacteria help
produce digestive enzymes, synthesize vitamins, absorb nutrients,
control infammation in the body, and control overgrowth of bad
bacteria and fungus.
Contrary to popular belief, yogurt is not the best source of probiotics,
says Dr. Watson. Its true that all yogurt is cultured with probiotics,
but not all yogurt contains live cultures in the fnished product.
This is because yogurt must be pasteurized, or heated, to kill off
potentially pathogenic bacteria. Unfortunately, this also kills off the
benefcial bacteria the yogurt was cultured
with.
Typically, probiotic supplements contain
between 2 to 6 billion organisms per capsule.
On average, less than 5% of good bacteria
arrive alive, and are able to populate once
inside the intestine.
It is important to look for a probiotic
supplement that has a sound delivery system
to ensure the probiotics are not destroyed by
stomach acid on the way to the intestines.
How much probiotics to take depends on
each individual and his or her health needs.
Think of a low potency probiotic as your
multivitamin Dr. Brenda Watson continued.
A 2 billion cfu (colony forming unit) dose
is what you would need to take everyday to
maintain good health. The dosage amount
differs from person to person, and more
information can be obtained at renewlife.ca,
advises Dr. Watson.
Recommended Daily Probiotic Usage
2 billion cfu: Minimum required to maintain good health
6 billion cfu: Everyday maintenance for people with chronic
intestinal complaints such as Chrons, colitis, IBS, infammatory
bowel disease, mild constipation, candida or parasites. It is also
recommended for people who have completed a course of antibiotics.
50 billion cfu: Very high potency probiotic is recommended for
people with chronic active issues linked to constipation, Chrons,
IBS, active yeast infections and for supporting a weakened immune
system, or coming off long-term antibiotic use.
Four Features to Look for in a Probiotic
Supplementing your daily diet with probiotics is the easiest way to
build up good bacteria, to keep the immune system strong. Here
are some important tips from Dr. Brenda Watson, when choosing a
probiotic supplement.
1. High Culture Count: The culture count refers to the total amount
of live, friendly bacterial cultures in a single serving. For general
health, 2 6 billion bacteria per serving is suffcient. If treating a
health condition, a higher culture count like 50 billion bacteria per
capsule is ideal. Always check with your doctor frst for the ideal

amount of bacteria for your health needs.
2. Number of Strains: There are over 1,000 strains of benefcial
bacteria in the gut. A good rule of thumb is that a variety of strains
more closely resemble the diversity that naturally exists in the gut.
Look for the naturally occurring strains that begin with Ls and Bs,
like lactobacilli and bifdobacteria. A good way to remember is that
the L strains are good for the little (small) intestine. The B strains
are good for the big (large) intestine or colon.
3. Delayed Release: Probiotics must travel through the harsh
stomach environment and arrive alive in the intestines to be
effective. If they never make it through the stomach acid, they
wont do you any good. Delayed-release capsules are engineered
to remain intact through the stomach and begin dissolving in the
intestines, where they are needed most. Enteric coated capsules or
bio-tract tablets protect the probiotics from harsh stomach acid
and delivers them directly to the intestines where they are needed
and utiltized by the body.
4. Potency at Time of Expiration: Any probiotic is fresh when
manufactured, but very few remain at full strength through their
expiration date. A probiotic supplement, when delivered to the
right place, with the right amount of cultures and strains, can
help promote digestive health, bowel regularity and strengthen
the bodys natural immune defenses. Be sure to read the label for
potency at time of expiration, not manufacture.

Dont Let Bugs Ruin Your Summer Fun
(NC)Its that time of year when families plan fun-flled outdoor
adventures like going to the cottage, camping, hiking, picnicking,
canoeing, or horseback riding through the woods. These activities
are great for families to bond and create long-lasting memories.
Unfortunately, these special moments can be spoiled when pesky
mosquitoes and deer ticks invade your fun-flled outdoor activities.
Fortunately, its never been easier to enjoy an outdoor family
adventure and still have dependable protection from mosquitoes
and deer ticks. Avon, the creators of the iconic Skin So Soft product
line, has launched a new bug repellent in Canada Skin So Soft Bug
Guard Plus Icaridin Insect Repellent Spray II.
Avon frst created Skin So Soft in 1961 as a bath oil for women, and its
fragrance and moisturizing properties have appealed to consumers
ever since. Although it was originally created for women, Skin So
Soft has been used by women, men and children for decades.
Now Avon has taken expanded its Skin So Soft products line
and formulated a product that provides strong and dependable
repellency against mosquitoes for up to fve hours and deer ticks
for up to seven hours. Avons repellent spray uses Icaridin as its
repelling agent, which is an effective alternative ingredient to DEET.
Some consumers dont like DEET repellents because they have a
greasy feel and an odour. Additionally, DEET can damage plastics
and some fabrics, while Avons product will not harm plastics or
synthetic fabrics.
The new Avon Insect repellent has a pleasant scent, is non-greasy,
has a light, clean feel when applied and also contains ingredients
like vitamin E and aloe.
Icaridin has been used worldwide since 1998, and is one of the best
