Womens role in society is one that has developed since England in the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century. During that time men had admired a womans ability to paint tables, cover skreens and net purses, on the other hand superior women believe in being practiced in domestic skills and especially in the form of entertainment whereby this included the acts of music, singing, drawing, dancing and eventually settling in and finding a husband. This was seen as the main goal for all women of this time. Women of this era were not expected to have an education nor work laborious in the work force, it was the mens job to make the living and essentially the womans job to find a husband who had the status and economic stability, marriage was rarely done for love. As demonstrated in Pride and Prejudice, the marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte was purely because of Charlottes knowledge of Mr. Collins wealth, family connections and social status. The gender roles between women and men were clearly disproportional.
Australia in 2009
Female roles in Australia in todays society have changed dramatically in comparison to the other eras in specific regions of the world such as England and Australia. The motives and goals of women has largely evolved as the objective of finding a husband and being married has been interchanged with the intellectual acknowledgement of a degree and a sustaining career. The gender roles in the modern society have become a force towards egalitarian culture as female
and male roles have gradually become one. The right to vote, the freedom of speech, the ability to obtain any jobs in any field of the workforce, the right for an education, and so on has come to play a major part in an individuals life. The evolution of the position of women in society has hence revolutionized this world, and such evolution in womens roles in society is portrayed evidently in Pride and Prejudice and Letters to Alice, as both texts are juxtaposed and we can evince the very fact of how the roles of women have changed from being restrained to domestic house chores and marriage without love to the freedom in society to have options.
