Here are the questions. I am doing a story on 'Changing lifestyles in A towns'.

How have things changed in the past ten years in terms of: Society- last ten years has witnessed a huge shift from an introvert to outgoing society. The overall shift of the society towards education, liberalism can be seen evidently. Ten years back, prime motivation for women education was to make her eligible for better spouse, today, the fairer sex is being encouraged for professional qualifications, higher studies and a full time career. I have also seen various barriers in terms of caste, economic conditions etc. disappear to a large extent at least amongst the educated middle class society. Earlier, politics was considered a game of rascals, today, youth is highly enlightened and active to change things for better. The positive impact of constructive media and education is clearly identifiable. The prevailing culture now is similar to fusion culture, retaining the ethnicity of traditions, but with a modern approach. Eating habits- with the advent of BPOs and other job oriented zones in Jaipur, eating habits have also changed. Jaipur previously followed religiously eat-at-home culture and hence eating joints lacked the sophisticated service pattern and infrastructure as can be seen today. The preference of food has expanded to include continental food. Earlier, where you could only find family restaurants majorly serving Indian cuisines also offering limited continental cuisines, today we find dedicated restaurants, specializing in singular type of continental food, eg. Italian, or Chinese, or Thai food, etc. Going out- a decade back, going out by young crowd would essentially involve watching movies or theatres, or playing in parks. Today, the city offers a variety of places to chose from. The list includes coffee shops to malls, to amusement parks to hukka lounges and discs. Entertainment- Jaipur crowd has always had an ethnic approach towards entertainment. While the city embraced all new forms of entertainment, including discos, gaming, etc., age old forms of entertainment such as theatres, folk fairs etc. have not lost their value. While new events such as Elephant festival, or the literary festival etc. are being introduced to boost tourism and the educated class, the city retains the old forms of entertainment such as Polo matches, gangaur parade, puppet shows and magical folk dances. Periodic art performances at public places are also enjoyed.

Shopping- the only major difference seen in shopping habits of Jaipur crowd over past ten years is due to increase in number of shopping malls and hypermarkets, providing ease of shopping at reasonable prices. The Jaipur janta still prefers buying their colourful cotton clothes off small shops within walled city. The authentic jewellery stores are still the ones located in Johari Bazaar (jewellars market), and wedding shopping is still best done from old shops, selling hand crafted exclusive garments. Travel- Jaipur is now undergoing the metro wave, a project similar to Delhi metro rails, which is currently under construction. Save the introduction of metros, the city hasnt seen much change in terms of public transport, most commonly available forms being public buses, private mini buses, auto rickshaws/tempos and bicycle rickshaw. Recreation- Jaipurites enjoy various forms of recreation, including fine dining, cultural fests, adventure sports, lounging/ discs/pubs, etc. Brands- introduction of internationally acclaimed brands is a recent phenomenon for Jaipurites. After the city was brought in terms with the mall culture, stores like Shoppers stop and Lifestyle commenced the job of making Jaipurites brand conscious. Jaipurites are now brand conscious and brand specific. While the percentage of brand conscious people in Jaipur was extremely low a decade back, it has significantly arisen in these years. Is there any interesting story that you would like to share with us? Earlier, the street hawker women used to cover their faces with their dupatta and shy away from camera. Today, they pose for the tourists and sometimes also agree to get clicked with them. With time, these village women have come abreast with the technology. How much of a difference do you see in metros like Mumbai and Delhi to here? There definitely is a difference between metro cities and Jaipur. The pace of life in Jaipur is more relaxed, the family system still traditional and work-social life balance better. Though growth of the city is similar to Delhi, due to geographical proximity, but the city is still a couple of years behind Delhi in terms of nightlife and places the young crowd prefers. Culturally, the city is more preserved as compared to the metro cities, because the corporate culture has not had as huge an impact as it has on the metro cities. Hence, the pot pourri metro cities have witnessed by attracting career conscious people from all parts of the country has not been faced by Jaipur at such a scale. Do you see peoples perception changing to a modernised outlook? Yes. The introduction of many educational institutions of great repute and having young crowd has made situation better. How do you find the pace of life? If you had an option, would you shift to the metro cities? Why? Metros are only preferable due to the career exposure and opportunities they can offer. Otherwise, in every sense, Jaipur offers a more comfortable abode and promises better lifestyle to people.
