Introduction
Global demand of space (Population growth and pollution), related energy crisis and traffic hazards are growing concern for the global, regional and national stakeholders. The increase in urban population does not commensurate with the development work, thus causing congestion and shortage of land. The resources like transport, energy, fuel etc. and environmental hazards are causing inconvenience to the population. Many experts also think that the monorail/metro system is good for crowded cities, such as the one in Australia, UK and Europe which is popular amoung the passengers. The world has realized the problem areas and planned its remedial measures by utilizing the space for living, leisure, infrastructures, transport, storage, utilities, distributions, industries, defence and many other functions. The mega tunnel projects in the world are English channel (under sea), Woodhead tunnel, Alps tunnel, Seikan tunnel (under sea), Gotthard Base tunnel and Gjovik largest cavern. The under ground space has been claimed by making basements, tunnels and caverns below the ground. The Metro system in urban areas has really solved the travelling and improved the living, safety and environments. The huge development works in major cities of Pakistan has also been carried out by making new roads and widening of existing roads but could not fulfill the purpose as increase in population and traffic is more than its development work, thus further depleting the situation. The Government of Pakistan has decided to go for the Metro system in major cities in the country and has planned to make good communication in the form of road and rail tunnels in the mountainous areas of the country to provide smooth and safe link between the cities. The Metro system will reduce traffic up to 35%, simultaneously saving the fuel and energy. The underground infrastructures also contribute to sustainability of urban environment by creating structures less impacted by earthquake. Few of the under construction and completed tunnels are Lowari road tunnel at Chitral, Lak pass road tunnel at Quetta and road tunnels at FATA. Moreover Leepa Valley road tunnel, Kojak and Landi Kotal rail tunnels are planned in near future. The hydropower projects have also been started/planned to overcome the power energy crisis like Neelum Jhelum, Keyal Khwar, Dubair Khwar, Allai Khwar Lower Palas, Lower Spat Gah and Bunji hydropower development project. There is a dire need to convince the planner and user to familiarize with the problem and its solution to utilize local materials and space to save energy and protect environment by providing related education and knowledge on tunneling. Some of the limitations identified with the existing education include use of outdated discipline biased or irrelevant information, poor medium of instructions; lack of continuity between different levels of underground or tunneling education; lack of integration with the wider curriculum and with local geological and hydrological knowledge; lack of practical relevance to local and community needs; lack of resources; and poor linkages between trainers and locally available professional bodies to achieve desired level of accreditation for career development. NUST Institute of Civil Engineering (NICE), School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (SCEE) of National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) is conducting one week short course on Tunneling.
