Chemistry

Mr. Sean McMahon The Course: Chemistry is an elective course designed for either college bound science students, or for four year college bound students who want a rigorous 18 week class. Please note that Chemistry is a two quarter class. We will be investigating topics such as matter, atoms, electron configuration, nomenclature, the periodic table, ions, elements, bonding, moles, stoichiometry, gas laws, and acids & bases. Class Rules: Make sure you have your class materials and are prepared to learn every day of class.

Grades: Grades are computed on a total point system. Each assignment, lab, quiz or test is given a certain point value. At the end of the grading period, each students total points will be divided by the points possible to determine a letter grade. A = 92.50-100 B = 85.00-92.49 C = 77.50-84.99 D = 69.50-77.49 F = 69.49 or below Extra Credit: Bonus points will be given for having the progress reports signed by a parent/guardian and returned within two school days. Progress reports will usually follow each chapter test. Please access parent connect regularly, as assignments, labs, quizzes, and/or tests will be uploaded daily as they are graded. Attendance: Please refer to the student handbook concerning the schools attendance policy. Realize that excessive absences will only result in more make-up work, and often has a negative effect on the quality of work. Make-up Work: YOU are entirely responsible for making up all labs, quizzes, tests, and other work which you may miss due to illness or any other absence. Notes can be copied from anyone in class. Assignments must be turned in within two days for every day missed in order to receive full credit. Please call the office (or email the instructor) and have the assignments sent home if it is likely that you will miss more than one day of school. When you returnif you have questions, please check with me before or after class. Make-up work not completed on time will result in a reduced grade for the assignment. No make-up work will be accepted once the chapter test has been taken. Materials: The required materials, which are to be brought to class everyday, are as follows: --Three ring binder with chemistry workbook, notebook, pen and pencil, calculator and text Note: Fines will be assessed if glassware or laboratory materials are broken or damaged. Books: The text is Chemistry. The book must be covered. Book fines will be given for any damage done to the text. If the book is lost or destroyed, the student will be assessed the cost for its replacement. Study Habits: Chemistry is a class that you will need to expect to do daily homework, as well as extra problems in order to practice and master the concepts in most chapters. Failure to prepare, do extra practice and study the material will make the class very difficult to pass, as it is a rigorous college prep class. If there are ever any problems, questions or concerns, please feel free to call and schedule a time in the morning to come in and discuss it with me. Please do not let yourself fall behind! Together we can make this a rewarding and challenging class! Parent Contact: If behavior or academic issues become a problem that can not be resolved in class, parents will be contacted. The fastest and most reliable method for me is email. Please leave your email address and day time phone number so that you can be contacted about your son/daughter if necessary. If you would rather not be contacted, please write that on the line. You may reach me at any time at sean.mcmahon@fpsmail.org. I generally am able to reply to emails within the hour. Please note: if an email address is not written below, or on file with our school through Parent Connect, I will not be allowed to respond to you. _________________________________________ Student Signature (date) _________________________________________ Parent email _________________________________________ Parent Signature (date) _________________________________________ Parents name to be contacted (please print)
