Agitated depression is one of many different types of depression and it is one that many have never heard of.

This type of depressive disorder is characterized by symptoms and sessions of intense irritability and aggravation. The client will be very restless and also may experience outbursts of range and anger. Sometimes people get this confused with situational depression which really presents itself differently - in particular, there usually isn't any angry outbursts. They may tell you that no one understands them or has any way to understand what they may be feeling. Depression of the "agitated" kind is termed hypo-manic depression sometimes because there are behaviors that will mimic the hypo manic behaviors. In all kinds of depression there can be some amount of agitation and irritability, but in this type of depression these symptoms are far more pronounced. Just as there are symptoms for each type of depression, agitated depression has specific symptoms which will make it more obvious and easier to diagnose. In some cases, however, this is mistaken for manic depressive disorder, which has similar symptoms. There can be some misdiagnosis since this type of depression does mimic other varieties in some ways. The verbal outbursts and other forms of agitation have sometimes led to misdiagnosis and to patients being offered medications which do not treat for the depression. In these cases the illness becomes far more prevalent and far less controlled. There will be pronounced agitation in these cases and deepen the depression which increases the risk of suicide. This can be a very serious disorder if it goes untreated. The symptoms can range from moderate to extremely severe. How each person will be effected differently depending largely on the person and their natural demeanor. This form of depression is more prevalent in males and those that are older and middle aged. However, younger people can also be effected by this as well. It's not at all difficult to recognize the symptoms that you're going to see when someone is struggling with this type of depression. Those who are victims of this kind of disorder are generally not able to sit still for long periods of time. They will suffer emotional and physical outbursts,

sometimes violent verbal outbursts. They complain a great deal and believe that they are misunderstood, but they are also prone to some other behaviors, which, if you see them, will help you to nearly immediately identify that it is agitated depression. Hypomania is generally a mild to moderate level of mania, characterized by optimism, pressure of speech and activity, and decreased need for sleep. Generally, hypomania does not inhibit functioning like mania.[16] Many people with hypomania are actually in fact more productive than usual, while manic individuals have difficulty completing tasks due to a shortened attention span. Some people have increased creativity while others demonstrate poor judgment and irritability. Many people experience signaturehypersexuality. These persons generally have increased energy and tend to become more active than usual. They do not, however, have delusions or hallucinations. Hypomania can be difficult to diagnose because it may masquerade as mere happiness, though it carries the same risks as mania. Hypomania may feel good to the person who experiences it. Thus, even when family and friends learn to recognize the mood swings, the individual often will deny that anything is wrong.[17] Also, the individual may not be able to recall the events that took place while they were experiencing hypomania.[6] What might be called a "hypomanic event", if not accompanied by complementary depressive episodes ("downs", etc.), is not typically deemed as problematic: The "problem" arises when mood changes are uncontrollable and, more importantly, volatile or "mercurial". If unaccompanied by depressive counterpart episodes or otherwise general irritability, this behavior is typically called hyperthymia, orhappiness, which is, of course, perfectly normal.[citation needed] Indeed, the most elementary definition of bipolar disorder is an often "violent" or "jarring" state of essentially uncontrollable oscillation between hyperthymia and dysthymia. If left untreated, an episode of hypomania can last anywhere from a few days to several years. Most commonly, symptoms continue for a few weeks to a few months.[18]

Agitated depression is considered to be a major type of depression and those who are suffering from it will not be aware that they are victims of this mental illness. From the outsiders perspective, it would appear that individuals who have agitated depression are overly obnoxious, angry, and is highly irritable. This is in contrast to what many people would view depression as being the mental illness that causes people to become slow, sluggish, and unwilling to partake in any activities. The agitated depression symptoms will often commonly be much more prominent in middle aged and older adults as opposed to children and younger adults. There is a distinct correlation between individuals who exhibit signs of hypomania and those who are diagnosed with agitated depression. In some highly severe cases of this condition, individuals will even consider doing physical harm to others or to themselves in an attempt to escape from their troubles.

Agitated depression treatment is something that is accomplished through the use of prescribed medication and therapy. Drugs treatment come with their typical concerns in that it has to be taken in a very specific dosage and at very specific intervals in order to garner the most effect. Therapy sessions can also be administered to help individuals develop the state of mind that can eventually help them to overcome their illness on their own. Agitated depression therapy can take several sessions before positive results are seen. Because agitated depression patients doesnt show any of the typical signs of what many people would consider to be a person who is depressed, they will often go unnoticed and untreated until the symptoms become worsen to the point where the physical safety of the individual becomes a concern for everyone. If you suspect someone who is exhibiting signs of having this condition it is advisable to approach them with an open mind and not be direct since many people who have this condition will themselves not realize that they have it or dont think that it is a serious enough issue to warrant professional medical attention. Subtly suggest that they might have this condition and recommend to them that they seek help from special depression help groups or medical depression clinics.
