The Bangkok Thai Stix Ball Hockey Club in conjunction with the International Street & Ball Hockey Federation (http://www.isbhf. com), the international body for the sport of ball hockey organized the tournament. And this year, Domenic Di Gironimo, President of the ISBHF, came all the way from Toronto to attend the event and helped John Casella officiate. The first tournament, played in 1995, was a two-team showdown between Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. With that best-of-five series knotted at two games a piece, the championship was called due to darkness with the score tied at one. Then last year, the final between Slovakia and Hong Kong was called and ruled a draw due to rain. So John Casella decided to move the tournament to March from May, the month it had always been held, to avoid future rain-outs. Participating teams this year included Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Slovakia and Bangkok. Hong Kong has dominated the Mekong Cup in recent years and was expect- ing to face the Slovaks again in the final this year to truly sort out who was champion as the rain-enforced tie last year left both teams eager to establish their dominance. But coming out of the round robin the Slovaks were 4-0, Singapore 3-1, Hong Kong 2-2, Tokyo 1-3 and Bangkok 0-4. The Slovaks as the first seed then defeated To- kyo the fourth seed in one semi-final, while Singapore played with grit and determination knocking off Hong Kong in the other semi- final. Bangkok as the fifth seed, stood and watched. Given that the red-shirted UDD were staging a mass rally in Bangkok on the day of the tournament, it was fitting that the yellow- shirted Slovakian team faced off against the red-shirted Singapore Chili Crabs in the final, and not surprisingly the yellow shirted Slova- kians won 6-3 (their full name is HKL-MJM Petralka). The Thai Stix dominated Southeast Asian ball hockey in the early part of this decade winning the Mekong Cup from 2000-2002 and in 2004. But since then, wins have been Phuket recentl y hosted the si xt eent h annual Mekong Cup International Ball Hockey Tournament. This one-day event is the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia. The five participating teams played 5-on-5 (four out with a goalie) in a round-robin format with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. A beachside awards banquet/BBQ followed the championship game, and post-game celebrations spilled over onto Patong Beach. The Thai Stix team is a close-knit group both on-and-off the court. Ball hockey developed in North America as a way that ice hockey players could keep in shape during the summer months when ice time was scarce. Some of the Thai Stix also play ice hockey with the Flying Farangs but they admit that as they get older, they find it tougher to play ball hockey because of the greater demands it puts on their cardiovas- cular system. Because of the heat and the nature of the game - you can't float like you can in ice hockey - it is a very demanding workout. John Stevens, one of the longest serving members, and the captain of the Thai Stix, explains his passion for the game: "First, it has to do with carrying on the great hockey tradition that almost every Canadian shares. Second, the thrill of playing in a tropical climate is quite bizarre. Third, is the sheer excitement of the game that you have loved since you were a little kid. It gets in your blood very quickly." The Mekong Cup also supports a very worthy cause with a charity auction held at the banquet dinner, which has been able to raise more than THB200,000 for the Vivian Slot Scholarship Fund (http://www.unizg.hr/ vivianscholarship), named after the daughter of a Hong Kong/Singapore ball hockey player who unfortunately lost her life in the 2004 tsunami while visiting Phuket on holiday with her family. The Thai Stix are regrouping and plan to play in the Canton Cup (Hong Kong) Tourna- ment in May and the Yamato Cup (Tokyo) Tournament in October. They practice every Thursday evening, or late Saturday afternoon (or both), at the British Club. If you wish to learn more about ball hockey contact John Stevens at bkkballhockey@gmail.com. SERVICES STRUS OFFERS Organizational Review An Ontario Ministry Branch engaged Strus to conduct a full review of their Branch. This led to changes in the organizations structure, roles and responsibilities at all levels, facility layout changes and alignment of mandates to the Ministry itself. A small company on the east coast hired Strus to review their entire organiza- tion to determine where the root cause of their problems lay. Was it in management, organizational structure, number or types of resources, sales, customer relationship management or other processes? Not only did Strus give comprehensive feedback, but it completely restructured the organization, along with redefining key roles and respon- sibilities, and outlining the required process changes. Governance One of Strus greatest undertakings was to tackle a board that had all but ceased to function. Mandates were unclear; policies di- luted or non-existent; and relationships had deteriorated to a point where they could not see what had to be done, because there was no trust. In the end, Strus was given an award by the board for the positive outcomes achieved. Bjorn is among the few authors to have released a work of fiction (his third) and a book of non-fiction on the same day. I guess you could say I am pretty obsessed Bjorn Turmann: Canadian Author and Speaker, launches two new books with the written and spoken word, said Turmann, when asked about his work as both a writer and a speaking coach. I find a lot of similarities between crafting stories and helping my corporate clients with their communications problems. Stories need memorable characters and a unique plot in order to be compelling. Likewise, a strong speech or presentation needs a good story and a unique strategy in order to be compel- ling. I spend my time developing both. Turmann describes his new books as journeys. My public speaking clients May 2010 11 g for Humans...Finally! Individual Members Mr. Douglas McInnes Mr. Andrew M. Scarry Mr. Timothy Williams come from so many different industries and cultures. People with experiences so different from my own. I find a lot of their stories very intriguing. Some of what they tell me ends up in my fiction. Arriving to Asia from his hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1993, Tur- mann immediately immersed himself in the Asia adventure. Anyone who has left home knows that this can be both frightening and inspiring. Making my way to Asia definitely inspired me to explore. There are endless stories to tell when you live here. My work is a reflection of that. His new novel, The Last Tobacco Shop in the World, is set on the island of Jarangwa in the Andaman Sea in the year 2040 (see synopsis below). Although its set in the future, its definitely not science fiction, says Turmann. The island has one hotel on it a hotel that looks more like 1940 than 2040. Its a tiny island with characters who all contribute to the mystery of the place. Its definitely Or- wellian, perhaps even utopia-like. I am trying to adapt the book to a film and the storys pacing has already made readers comment on its potential for the screen. Now I just have to find an island to stand in for my fictitious Jarangwa! Speaking Energy: Public Speaking for Hu- mansFinally! is the first in a series of public speaking books that Turmann has planned for the next couple of years. I am actually trying to change the phrase public speaking to a much more 21st century phrase, human speaking. Public speaking is outdated. Hu- man speaking is never outdated. (See the belowing synopsis of the book). The book has received some strong reviews. Professor Grant McCracken of MIT said that its Vivid, human, interesting, well and clearly written... will make each of us a better communicator and the corporation a happier, more efficient place. The famed National Speakers Bureau in the United States praised the book for its ability to teach us all to lead. Communications is at the heart of every- thing we do in life. I want to inspire people to think about not only public speaking in a different way, but our daily communications with everyone we come in to contact with as well be it home, office, family, friends, etc. Im not interested in how we speak, Im interested in why we speak. Those are two very different approaches. My coaching never involves rules. Finding human connection is not an exact science. I never approach it as such. Its free flow and all of us have the potential to be a memorable speaker. In Thailand, Turmanns books are avail- able at selected Asia Books outlets as well as on-line and on Kindle. The Last Tobacco Shop in the World The Last Tobacco Shop in the World Its the year 2040 and Anton Brick finds isolation on Rabbit Island more appealing than his job as a syrup monkey chasing fringe supplies of oil in Iraq. Putting further distance between himself and the challenge of his troubled relation- ships, Anton lands on autonomous Jarangwa inspired by the promise of a large salary, only to discover an enigmatic island governed by complex personalities and frightening personal ambitions. Voyageur 12 Community News By Krystal Crosby C anada was the ultimate host for the Winter Olympics. The Canadians were praised for being hospitable and friendly. Major roads were shut down and turned into outdoor party venues. High-fives and hugs were given out to anyone that happened to walk by. You could become best friends with someone from Switzerland or Australia after only knowing them for five minutes. I was working in the heart of downtown Vancouver, beside Canada Hockey Place. I was fortunate enough to get the full Olympic experience. There was an overall feel of joy, acceptance, and comradery. Two days after the Olympics ended, I hopped on a plane to arrive in Bangkok just in time for the annual Snow Ball. From personal experience, I can say that the team that planned the ball was able to capture the tone of the real Olympics quite well. At the Olympics-themed ball, fun was had by all; with activities for all ages. Guests were welcomed by a giant ice sculpture In- shuksuk, which was the logo of the Olympics. Photographs were taken, and everyone got a copy as a souvenir to remember the event by. Guests then entered in through the doors, which were framed by two very large torches and Olympic rings, and were immediately given refreshments. Once inside, the guests could bid on their favourite auction items and take part in the biathlon. The biathlon consisted of shooting foam darts through Olympic rings, and try- ing to score goals on a team Canada goalie. Points were added together, and the gold P assport Canada pl ans to launch an ePassport in 2012, and in the meantime it wants to hear Canadians' thoughts on the issue including revised fees. The cowbell rang, indicating dinnertime, and everyone headed in. Once everyone was seated, the theme song of the Vancouver Olympics I Believe, blasted through the air, as the Olympic torch and Canadian and Thai flags relayed to the front stage. The Club Canada Thailand Celebrates the Winter Olympics cauldron was lit, and the main part of the event began. The food and desserts were delicious, but the main attraction was the beautiful ice bar. At only 100 baht per shot, vodka flowed from the ice luge into commemorative shot glasses. The DJ helped get the party started by playing some dance music. Between the dance floor and the bar, everyone had a place to catch up with friends, and even make some new ones. Just like at the real Olympics, people of different nations and experiences got to- gether to celebrate diversity and excellence. Even though we are spread out across the earth, a single event like the Olympics can bring people together. I have never been more proud to be Canadian. Ambassador Hoffmann receiving his gold medal Father and daughter making memories at the Ice Bar "The use of ePassports will allow Canada to follow international standards in the field of passport security to protect our borders and maintain the ease of international travel that Canadians currently enjoy," Passport Canada said in a release. Along with the changes will come new fees a development that requires consultation with Canadians, under the User Fees Act, according to the agency. Canadians are asked to fill out an on- line questionnaire on Passport Canada's website by May 7. The comments will be considered in the development of the new passport and its fees.
