Yarn: DK weight yarn

Amount: 70 grams / 210 metres / 230 yards (based on my

Measurements, you may use more or less)
Needles: 3mm long circular needle (magic loop)
Gauge: 7.5 stitches per inch
Notions: 2 stitch markers, scrap yarn for holding thumbs
to one side

Description
Mittens created from the finger tip down to the cuff WITH a thumb gusset! I have used the Magic Loop
method but you could use DPN’s if preferred. Ensure perfect fit every time as they can be tried on
throughout the pattern. The thumb length and mitt length can easily be changed

Abbreviations
KFB – Knit into the front and back of this stitch, thus increasing by one stitch
YB – Yarn back
K2togTBL – Knit next 2 stitches together through the back loops
Wrap - Inset the right needle between stitches 6 & 7 on the left needle from front to back, pull through
the working yarn from the back, place the loop created on left needle and knit it together with the next
stitch on the left needle (which is always a knit stitch)
NB – always remember to pull the loop fairly snug when placed on the left needle, other wise the wrap
will be lose and will not gather properly
N1 – Top of hand / pattern side
N2 – Palm side / stockinette side

Wrap Stitch Pattern

Only on top of hand through the whole pattern, Needle two (palm side) is always worked in
stockinette
Row 1: N1 – P2, *K2, P2* 7 times / N2: Knit
Row 2: As row 1
Row 3: *P2, YB, WRAP, K2, P2, K2* to last 2 stitches, P2 / N2: Knit
Row 4: As row 1
Row 5: As row 1
Row 6: P2, K2, *P2, YB, WRAP, K2, P2, K2* to last 2 stitches, P2 / N2: Knit

Thumbs – Make 2
The easiest way is to make two thumbs and put on waste yarn/ stitch holder until needed
Cast on 6 stitches (3 on each needle)
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: *KFB* - 12 stitches
Row 3: “K2, KFB* to last 2 stitches, K2 – 20 stitches

Work in stockinette until thumb is 2.5 – 3” long (the thumb should sit in
the corner between your thumb and side of the hand, mine was about
2.75”)
When the thumb is the right length, cut yarn and place stitches on
waste yarn, stitch holder or spare needles. Do second thumb in same
manner

Mittens – Make 2 - Start both mitts using the following

instructions:

Cast on 24 stitches (12 per needle) using Judy Becker’s Magic Cast-On
(see www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html for more information)

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: K1, KFB, knit to last two stitches on needle one, KFB, K1 – repeat for needle 2
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have 56 stitches (28 per needle)

Knit one row rearranging stitches so that N1 has 30 stitches and N2 has 26 (move the first and last
stitch from one needle onto the other) – so that there are 30 stitches on the top of the hand and 26 on
the palm side.

Work in Wrap Stitch Pattern until the mitten meets at your thumb joint. It doesn’t matter if you
haven’t completed a full pattern repeat at this point; just make a note of what row you just finished.

Adding Thumb to Left Mitt – Maintain stitch pattern on top side throughout these directions

Work across pattern side, maintaining pattern, place marker, place 10 stitches from thumb onto the
needle after the marker just placed. On needle two place remaining 10 thumb stitches to needle, place
another marker then knit across to the end of the row.

Work one knit row whilst maintaining pattern on top side

Gusset Decreases
R1: N1 – maintain stitch pattern to the marker, slip marker, K2togTBL, knit to end of needle
N2 – Knit to two stitches before marker, K2tog, slip marker, knit to end of row
R2: N1 – maintain stitch pattern, knit thumb stitches
N2 – Knit to end of row

Nb – you may wish to use your own preferred decreases rather than the K2tog and K2togTBL that I
used!

Repeat rows 1 & 2 maintaining stitch pattern until you have 2 thumb stitches left (1 on each needle),
remove 1st marker and move the thumb stitch on top side onto bottom needle then Sl1, K1, PSSO,
remove marker and knit to end of row

Adding Thumb to Right Mitt - Maintain stitch pattern on top side throughout these directions

At beginning of round, please 10 thumb stitches which are currently held on waste yarn, place marker,
work across top of hand in pattern. On second needle, work across palm side in stockinette, place
marker, then place remaining 10 thumb stitches to palm

Work one knit row whilst maintaining pattern on top side, knitting thumb stitches also

R1: N1 – Knit to last 2 stitches before 1st marker, k2tog, slip marker, and work in stitch pattern to end of
N1
N2 – Knit to marker, slip marker, K2togTBL, knit to end
R2: N1 – Knit thumb stitches, slip marker, maintain stitch pattern
N2 – Knit to end of row

Nb – you may wish to use your own preferred decreases rather than the K2tog and K2togTBL that I
used!

Cuff
Carry on with stitch pattern on top and knit the bottom row until the mitten reaches the bottom of your
palm

Switch to K1, P1 ribbing for desired length. I usually work for about 3” as I prefer to tuck my cuff under
my jacket.

Cast off using tubular bind off, my preferred method or cast off using your own preference.

For details on how to do a Tubular Bind Off, see Savannahchik’s excellent tutorial at
www.savannachik.com/2006/11/tubular_bindoff.htm

Weave in ends and any gap that may have been created when adding the thumbs

Enjoy your lovely new mitts!
