The duo format is the most intimate dialogue between two musicians, a time when each player has to give up, dig deep to draw out the music from the instruments, the scores, from improvisations by the other. All this happens magically and so it has been from the first time Nico Gori played with Fred Hersch. Proclaimed by Vanity Fair magazine, the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade or so, Fred Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievement as a composer, bandleader, and theatrical conceptualist, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists. A lot of his albums has been rewarded (Whirl was into numerous 2010 best-recording-of-the-year lists, Alone won the Coup de Coeur of Charles Cros Academy in France in 2011, Alone at the Vanguard was nominated for two 2012 Grammy Awards). He is also famous for his ambitious 2011 production My Coma Dreams which had the New York Times approbation. Nico Gori recorded in 2003 his first jazz album as a leader, the Nico Gori Quartet Groobin High. Since 2004 he has been a member of Stefano Bollanis New Quintet, recording a few discs, and a leader (along with S. Onorati) of the Millenovecento. He is also the leader of a quartet formed by French musicians since 2005 which recorded Alien in your head. The two musicians met together in July 2010 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. Nico Gori was playing in the ensemble of the Italian pianist Stefano Bollani and Fred Hersch in Trio +2. Immediately they were drawn by the others sound. Coming back from the festival they took the same bus from to the hotel and started a conversation. Thus they arranged a local jazz club in Florence to play together for the first time, and it been the revelation. The duo partnership became obvious. The musical and human partnership between them, born from the desire to make music with each other, to explore, to get to know music, is understood as the highest and most noble goal, without any prejudice and clichs.

I know the musical work of Fred Hersch for many years, it has always been a great source of inspiration and Fred Hersch is a clear example to follow, a Master, of life and music. He is a wonderful pianist and a fine composer in continuous flow, evolving. His personal voice on piano and his different kinds of compositions have influenced and continues to influence the new generations of musicians, placing Fred Hersch among the great figures of contemporary jazz. It's a great privilege for me, a huge honor and an important confirmation that I can now share with Fred many wonderful musical moments and a deep friendship. I hope our partnership will last and continue to grow for many years to come and that this record is only the first of a long series of collaborations!! Nico Gori At the club, he pulled out his clarinet and started to play "Without A Song" and from the very beginning I sensed a very kindred musical spirit. He has one of the greatest clarinet sounds in jazz and is a fearless improviser. I love playing duos and it was so easy to play with him from the first notes. So I found a way to invite him to play with me in New York, then we played in Europe - Florence and Paris and other cities and pretty soon a duo partnership was born. We recorded this CD one afternoon at the studio of the remarkable engineer Stefano Amerio in Udine and you are listening to the results of that session. We have performed since this recording and the music continues to get deeper and richer. I look forward to playing with Nico for many years to come - he is a real master of the clarinet and we have a great time playing music together.
