SPRING/SUMMER 2012 Hamilton, Ontario

Fill a Bus, Feed a Family KNA Food Drive 2012:

The 5th annual food drive in support of Mission Services Food Bank on May 5th was a great success collecting 13,509 pounds of food, about 2500 pounds over last year. Fill a Bus, Feed a Family involved about 100 very enthusiastic volunteers who planned, collected donations, organized drivers for streets inaccessible by the bus, arranged printing, delivered flyers, posted notices, arranged lawn sign locations, collected boxes, did promotion and made donations for our administrative costs. Our special thanks to the scouts at St. John the Evangelist Church who delivered countless flyers for us and to the local public schools who sent notices to families. The Locke St. Library, Dell Pharmacy, Zarkys, Mr. Tonys, and Picks and Sticks generously took collection bins for those who would not be at home on May 5th. Many thanks as well to Mabels Labels, the Dundurn Street LCBO, Alexanian Carpets, Stanley Ave. Baptist Church, Coldwell Banker, Picks and Sticks, Aberdeen Gardens, Sleep Disorders Clinic, Steel City Surplus, Mary McFarlane Mortgage Associates and the Locke St. Merchants Association for their internal food collections which brought in about 1,000 pounds of food. We sincerely thank the Hamilton Spectator for their ongoing coverage.

Financial donations were gratefully accepted from the West Town Bar and Grill, Paul and Maria Doesburg, factor [e], La Jardinere, Edward Jones, Rays Boathouse, Stanley Avenue Baptist Church, Brad Chichakian, The Courtyard restaurant, Judy Marsales, David Church Associates and the Locke Street Merchants Association. We were pleased to welcome Mayor Bratina, Councillor Brian McHattie, MP David Christopherson and H.S.R. representative Chris Garrish to our kick off ceremony. We are very grateful to the City of Hamilton for again allowing us to use their city yards parking lot for our home base and for putting up pylons to avoid parked cars where the bus needed space to turn corners. We extend very sincere thanks to the Hamilton Street Railway and Chris Garrish for their continued support by supplying us with the bus and dedicated driver, Alex McGuigan. We have always maintained that Kirkendall Cares and this year, Kirkendall, you have outdone yourselves. Congratulations and many, many thanks! M.L. Reiman Chair, KNA Food Drive Committee

Crime Manager: Sgt. Scott Moreton

As a Sergeant in the crime managers office, my role is to track crime trends in the Westtown Sector and coordinate the proactive efforts of uniform patrol officers in the area. The Westtown Sector is comprised of the Kirkendall, Strathcona and Westdale neighbourhoods. The boundary is Queen Street to the end of Main Street West and the Mountain brow to the waterfront between Queen and the end of Main Street. The past five or so months have been a busy time in Kirkendall. At the beginning of the year, there was a rash of commercial break and enters to the businesses along Locke Street South and the surrounding areas. Thankfully, through a concentrated effort between my office, uniform patrol and the BEAR (Break Enter Auto Robbery) unit we were able to arrest the responsible party for these crimes and his charges are still before the courts. There continues to be steady incidents of theft from vehicles in the neighbourhood. We have made concerted efforts and have made arrests in this area but I would like to provide some crime prevention advice: The majority of incidents have been where cars have been left unlocked and property was clearly visible in the vehicle. During projects we have done on the responsible parties, we have seen them walk along the street and check multiple door handles, only stopping for vehicles whose doors are unlocked. If you implement these two changes ensuring your car doors are locked & valuables are out of sight you can help deter further incidents of crime. While we conducted traffic enforcement in your entire neighbourhood, there are three identified locations where we focus our traffic enforcement. Specifically: the no left turn from Glenfern Avenue and Stanley Avenue from Queen Street; speeding along Aberdeen from Queen Street South to the Highway and red light violations along Aberdeen between the Highway and Dundurn Street South. These locations have been identified through consultation with the Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association, the Councillors office and through community complaints. At any time if you wish to contact me directly to speak more in depth about any of these topics or any other subject, you can email me at smoreton@hamiltonpolice.on.ca or call (905) 540-5093.

Quick Notes:
Medication shortage: what are the alternatives? The Parish Nurse at The Church of St. John the Evangelist has organized a series of health and wellness talks. In Canada we are facing a medication shortage for some injectable medications that control pain. What can we do to help ourselves? Guest speaker Katrine Foss has a Hamilton-based practice as a Homeopath and Shiatsu Therapist. She is a graduate of the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine and trained as a certified Shiatsu Therapist with Mitsuki Kikkawa. Sunday June 24th, 12:30pm

Brian McHattie, Ward One Councillor, Chedoke Cootes

Things have been very busy in Kirkendall over the past months with positive growth in the Locke Street business area, further plans for new residential condominiums, and the preparation of actions to make it easier to get around by walking, cycling and taking the bus. The four-storey Allenby Lofts II condo application on Blanshard Lane (including 3 townhomes on Poulette St) is slated to come to City Planning Committee in September. Preliminary plans for a seven-storey condo have been discussed for the former Asian Grocery Store site on Locke St. between Canada and Jackson Streets. Your KNA Development Review Committee is working on those projects on behalf of the neighbourhood. Discussions are underway to add new transit service (early 2013) to the full length of Dundurn Street, allowing folks to get to Fortinos and connect with B-Line and GO buses at King and Main. Loblaws/Fortinos is working with us to plan better access to their stores for pedestrians (but also vehicles with a possible mid-block traffic signal being investigated), as is CBS Signs across their property at King and Dundurn. Those of you who use the Ward 1 leash-free dog facility at Hill St Park know the facility is well-used (too well-used actually!). To take the pressure off Hill St, a second leash-free area will be created in Cathedral Park behind Fortinos, expected to be available for use in September. When the Cathedral Park facility opens we will close Hill St leash-free area temporarily to perform rehabilitation works. The 20-member Ward 1 Participatory Budgeting Committee (with 8 Kirkendall reps) has met several times and will be seeking your ideas on how to allocate the $1.6M in annual funding available to our ward. To date weve been conducting a gap analysis of what we have and what we need in terms of road and sidewalk infrastructure, parks and recreational facilities and programming, arts and culture items and other needs. Watch for more info asking for your input this summer!

THE WARD 1 PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PBAC) WANTS YOUR INPUT! Do you have any ideas about how to enhance or improve our neighbourhood? WARD 1 HAS OVER $1.6 MILLION TO SPEND EACH YEAR ON COMMUNITY PROJECTS. Any ideas - big or small - are welcome. At the moment, the PBAC is the only committee like this in the city - and we want to reach as many Ward 1 citizens as possible. Your participation in providing ideas is the key to making it work. The sky is the limit - we want any & all suggestions. You can post comments on KNAs facebook page or email kirkendallpbac@gmail.com
