ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION

NEW NEW

This Roadside Design Guide was developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Design through the Technical Committee for Roadside Safety (TCRS). This book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual unitsmetric and U.S. Customary. This edition supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which included the update of the Median chapter. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. To be consistent with AASHTOs A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, design speed has been selected as the basic speed parameter to be used in this guide. However, because the design speed often is selected based on the most restrictive physical features found on a specific project, reasonable and prudent drivers may exceed that speed for a significant percentage of a project length. There will be other instances in which roadway conditions will prevent most motorists from driving as fast as the design speed. Because roadside safety design is intended to minimize the consequences of a motorist leaving the roadway inadvertently, the designer should consider the speed at which encroachments are most likely to occur when selecting an appropriate roadside design standard orfeature. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition. The Technical Committee on Roadside Safety is currently working through a NCHRP research project to update the Roadside Safety Analysis Program with the development of a window-friendly version. The RSAP update will be beta tested in 2011 and is expected to be available through AASHTO in early 2012, and will be available through a link on the web-based format of this publication. 2011. 354 pp.

AASHTO LRFD BRIDGE DESIGN GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR GFRP-REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS AND TRAFFIC RAILINGS, 1ST EDITION
Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials have emerged as an alternative material for producing reinforcing bars for concrete structures. GFRP reinforcing bars offer advantages over steel reinforcement due to their noncorrosive nature and nonconductive behavior. Due to other differences in the physical and mechanical behavior of GFRP materials as opposed to steel, unique guidance on the engineering and construction of concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP bars is needed. These guide specifications offer a description of the unique material properties of GFRP composite materials as well as provisions for the design and construction of concrete bridge decks and railings reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. 2009. 68 pp.

The Bridge Element Inspection Manual builds on the element level condition assessment methods developed in the AASHTO Guide for Commonly Recognized Structural Elements. Improvements have been made to fully capture the condition of the elements by reconfiguring the element language to utilize multiple distress paths within the defined condition states. The multi-path distress language provides the means to fully incorporate all possible defects within the overall condition assessment of the element. The overall condition of an element can be utilized in this aggregate form, or broken down into specific defects present as desired by the agency for Bridge Management System (BMS) use. The Bridge Element Inspection Manual provides a comprehensive set of bridge elements that is designed to be flexible in nature to satisfy the needs of all agencies. The complete set of elements capture the components necessary for an agency to manage all aspects of the bridge inventory utilizing the full capability of a BMS. 2011. 172 pp.

ROADWAY DESIGN ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION
This Roadside Design Guide was developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Design through the Technical Committee for Roadside Safety (TCRS). This book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual unitsmetric and U.S. Customary. This edition supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which included the update of the Median chapter. The focus of this guide is on safety treatments that minimize the likelihood of serious injuries when a driver does run off the road. The book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. The Technical Committee on Roadside Safety is currently working through a National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) research project to update the RSAP program in 2012, and will be available through a link on the web-based format. 2011. 354 pp.

GUIDELINES FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF VERY LOW-VOLUME LOCAL ROADS (ADT 400), 1ST EDITION

NEW

These guidelines address the unique design issues highway designers and engineers face when determining appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both new and existing construction projects. Because geometric design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, also known as The Green Book. Design values are presented in both metric and U.S. customary units. 2001. 94 pp.

A GUIDE FOR ACHIEVING FLEXIBILITY IN HIGHWAY DESIGN, 1ST EDITION

Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development.

SEGREGATIONCAUSES AND CURES FOR HOT-MIX ASPHALT, 1ST EDITION
Historically, segregation has been measured on a subjective basis with state inspectors determination based on visual information only. This is difficult because, particularly on surface mix, problems due to segregation may not appear for several months. Visual observation can identify only surface segregation, leaving that below the surface undetected. This report, jointly published by AASHTO and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, addresses segregation and how it can be eliminated to ensure the production of high quality paving mixtures. 1997. 32 pp.

AASHTO GUIDE FOR CONSULTING CONTRACTING, 1ST EDITION

The use of engineering consultants by state transportation agencies continues to be important in providing the appropriate solutions to transportation needs. This publication replaces the Guide for Contracting, Selecting, and Managing Consultants in Preconstruction Engineering, published by AASHTO in 1996. In order to assess current practices, questionnaires were developed for both state and consultant practitioners. The responses showed significant growth in the volume of work done by consultants and in the range of services provided by consultants. The results of these surveys, along with the collective experience and expertise of the technical committee membership, were used to restructure much of the guide and to update and expand the discussion of current practices for the effective use of consultants. 2008. 128 pp.

AASHTO DESIGN-BUILD PROCUREMENT GUIDE, 1ST EDITION

This guide is intended to assist state highway agencies in procuring design-build projects, including preparing requests for qualifications (RFQ) and requests for proposals (RFP) and selecting the successful proposer. TRANSPORTATION ASSET MANAGEMENT GUIDE, 1ST EDITION

State transportation officials at all levels face the task of managing a wide range of assets to meet public, agency, and legislative expectations. These assets include the physical transportation infrastructure (e.g., guideways, structures, and associated features and appurtenances) as well as other types of assets: e.g., an agencys human resources, financial capacity, equipment and vehicle fleets, materials stocks, real estate, and corporate data and information. This study therefore interprets transportation asset management as a strategic approach to managing physical transportation infrastructure. Transportation asset management in this context promotes more effective resource allocation and utilization based upon quality information.
