Germany is a nation that until a few years ago, was divided into two parts, West and East Germany. Reunited since 1990, it is now one of the largest, most populated and productive countries in Europe. Germany has many vibrant cities with amazing architecture, fabulous shopping and a pulsating nightlife, as well as enchanting medieval villages and friendly wine communities. Large varieties of festivals are held year-round and can be found throughout the country. The picturesque countryside is perfect for taking walks, hiking or simply relaxing among nature. Germany, Tafelwein and/or Landwein, and a quality wine category. Tafelwein and Landwien are very inexpensive table wines, and the quality wine category is divided into two sub-categories. Ninety-five percent of all German wine is quality wine. The sub categories are QbA or Qualitatswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete, and QmP or Qualitatwwein mit Pradikat. The QbA wines are grown and produced in one of Germanys thirteen official wine regions, and again are inexpensive, everyday wines. Wine in the QmP group are the highest quality of German wines. Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein

Beautiful Johannesburg is the heart of Germanys wine country. Up until the twentieth century, other than France, Germany was the Supreme European wine area, known for producing outstanding wines. It is widely believed that German wines are sweet wines; however, the majority of wine produced in Germany is bone dry. Due to Germanys unique Terroir, there is no other place on the planet that can produce such rare, exquisite and almost colorless white wines worthy of spectacular flavor, clarity and character. Because Germanys wine region is located so far north, the climate is often cool and damp. Grapevines are planted on steep, shear, mountainous slopes that face south, to catch as much sun as possible during the course of the day. The slate and basalt soil are also unique, and retain good amounts of heat, helps the grapes to mature and ripen. Germanys step mountain grapevines are extremely difficult to harvest. The majority of the harvest is completed by women, who can be spotted scaling the steep vineyards with baskets strapped to their backs. German vineyard owners often name their vineyards with amusing little names like Goldtropfchen, meaning Little raindrops of gold. The leading German wines are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muller-Thurgau, Rieslaner, Rulander, Scheurebe, Silvaner, Spatburgunder, Weissburgunder and Sekt, which is a sparkling wine. are wines of this category. Eiswein is made from very ripe frozen grapes, creating a wine that is not only very sweet, but also very acidic, making a sensational very rare and very expensive desert wine. Germanys most important wine region is Mosel-Saar Ruwer. The most wonderful, evanescent, transparent and incredible palate pleasing wines are produced in this beautiful, mystic Mosel River area. The steepest vineyard in the entire world is located near the village of Eller, on the Mosel River, and sports a 76-degree vertical wall of vines. While looking up at the steep vineyard, it is hard to imagine how any grapevine could survive. These vineyards not only survive, but also produce world-class fruit. It truly is a sight to behold. The Rheingau has the reputation for being historically the longest producing wine region in Germany that makes quality wine. The grape of the land is Riesling, with more that 80 percent of the total acreage planted with this grape. The sun is stronger than in the Mosel River region, with a vast mixture of loess, loam and quartzite soil that creates pleasant wines. The Pfalz region is the most exciting and inventive wine region in Germany today. Pfalzers have their own way of doing things when it comes to growing grapes and making wine. The Pfalz winemakers make more great wines from more varieties of grapes than winemakers anywhere else in Germany. Alsatian wines shine in this region. The Rheinhessen is Germanys largest producing area, with over 65,000 acres planted. Most of the wine is average, but it depends on where you stand. There are some good premium wines to be tasted along this region. The wine regions of Ahr, Baden, Franken, Mittelrhein, and Nahe are also wonderful places to visit and taste wine, but are considered to have less important, nondescript wines. However, good wines for great prices can still be found.

Frankfurt has many famous museums, fine art facilities and is known for its beautiful botanical garden, Palmengarten. During World War II, the city was heavily bombed, destroying its medieval city center. In turn, it created the modern and efficient city it is today. The population is largely diverse with only one third of the people actually being citizens of Germany. Austria is a landlocked Alpine country that shares its borders with eight other European countries. It has a stable democracy, a modern economy and many grand cities with miles of surreal countryside. Austrias vineyards lie in the eastern half of the country where the summers are warm, the winters not too cold and the rainfall is adequate. Viticulture in this part of the world is said to pre-date the Romans. Austrias first grapes are thought to be planted by the Celts. It was not until the 1950s that small groups of growers based in lower Austria, began to reform this tourist-focused industry by making some serious Austrian wines. Austrias wine industry was shaken in 1985, when sweet and semi-sweet wines were discredited by the unlawful practices of a handful of merchants, who had added chemicals to their musts. But two decades later, with new blood replacing old, Austrias wines are absolutely incredible. Austria is often wrongly assumed to be a social cultural subset of Germany. Though they share some similar characteristics, the wines bear little resemblance in taste to German wines. Austrian wines are fullbodied and show exceptional fruit notes,

city in the world considered an actual wine region. Numerous commercial vineyards actually exist within the city limits. Lower Austria is the most important and shares a border with Slovenia. Burgenland and Styria each are climatically and geologically distinct, and are still producing all the leading wines. The countrys wine production is 80 percent white, with some thirty-three grape varietals, found planted among the wine regions. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Cabernet Sauvignon can also be sampled in Austrian wineries. The glass manufacturer Riedel, is a tenth generation firm. Riedel is considered one of the finest crystal works in the world. The firms wineglasses are not only elegant, but have been engineered so that certain components in the wine are emphasized on the tongue, bringing out the best in the wines flavor. Not only do many leading winemakers, in all the major wine regions use the wineglasses, but Riedel stemware is found in the most expensive restaurants in Paris, London and Rome. Tafelwein and Landwein are fairly neutral and common table wines, with Landwein being the better of the two. Most of these wines stay inside of Austria or Europe. Qualitatswein, literally means quality, and must come from a single wine region that is made from authorized grapes that go through a quality control system. The wine can be chaptalized to increase the alcohol contents. Kabinett is a sub group, and is made from slightly riper grapes that cannot be chaptalized. Pradikatswein means wine with special attributes. Most of the top Austrian wines fall into this stringent category. The grapes come from one region only, and have specific winemaking guidelines that must be followed and tested for typicity. Spatlese, Auslese, Eiswein, Beerenauslese, Ausbruch and Trockenbeerenauslese are part of this sub category.

First recorded in the mid-1600s, it was declared the Wine of Kings and King of Wines. Today, it is so important to Hungary, that it is even mentioned in the national anthem. Mostly made from Furmint and Harslevelu grapes, the great, sweet wine relies on Botrytis cinerea for its character. The botrytized shriveled grapes referred to as Aszu, are put into puttony (wooden tubs, though today stain-

State farms and state cooperatives produced state wine. The country has 22 wine regions, though not all of them produce quality wine. The most important growing area is the Northeast region around Eger, where loess, tuffeau and clay soils at the foot of the Matra Hills, help to make bold red wines. Matraalja, just to the south is the second-largest wine region, where you can find Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that are reliable and reasonably priced. The wine regions of Badacsony and Somolo, located in the west, are influenced by the Danube and several lakes. Vibrant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and local specialty wines like the aromatic, spicy Csersegi Foszeres, can be found. In the south, the wine regions consist of Szekszard, Villany-Siklos and Great Alfold. Nearby is the new region of Tolna, producing Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and a Bordeaux-style red, named Talentum. The south is now Hungarys largest red-grape-growing region. Tokaj-Hegyalja is the most famous wine region, and is centered around the little town of Tokaj, where the rivers Bodrog and Tisza meet. It is the perfect region that creates the autumn growth of botrytis. The combination of cool,

less steel vats are also used), and left while a small amount of free-run juice collects at the bottom. This juice is called essence and is added to other musts. The contents of the puttony, minus the essence, is crushed to a paste and added to dry base wine made from non-botrytized grapes. The measure of sweetness on the label is shown as 3, 4, 5 or 6 puttonyos. The mixture is left to macerate for one to five days, and then the liquid is drawn off to ferment in barrels in underground cellars. The cellar walls are covered in a thick, black growth of the fungus, Racodium cellare, which helps maintain the humidity that is vital in allowing Tokaji to mature. The wine has a Sherry-like nose (oxidation being a deliberate part of the winemaking process), and becomes richer in flavor over fifteen years. Old Tokays are thirty years plus and can still taste very fresh. Bikaver - - The Blood of Bulls - - is the second most popular wine in Hungary. The name allegedly dates back to the siege of the fortress of Eger in 1552, when the attacking Turks took fright at the dark red wine stains on the Magyar soldiers uniforms, believing that they drank bulls blood to give them strength. The wine is a blended red and made from at least three grapes. Traditionally, it includes a high proportion of Kadarka, but this grape is tricky to grow and is often replaced by Kekfrankos. Cabernet Sauvignon, Kekoporto and Zweigelt are also usually part of the blend. From 1945 until the late 70s, the wine was one of the most widely distributed cheap red wines in Western Europe. Today there is a move to improve the method of creating this wine, to increase its reputation for quality. Hungarys Terroir, overall, has a continental climate with predictable cold winters and hot summers, with prolonged autumns that favor botrytis. The topography is mainly flat and arid, although some regions are hilly from past volcanoes. Lakes and rivers are also found throughout the country.

Historically, Budapest has seen many revolutions with the last of them ending in 1989, when the government gave up its power to the people, freeing it from communism. In 1990, Budapest went through a total reconstruction that involved tremendous growth and development, creating modern buildings and beautiful parks. The new surge also included new luxury hotels, huge malls, and a variety of restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. It is still know as the Pearl of the Danube, and its grand turn-of-the-century buildings and bridges marvel with elegance and grace, especially when the flood lights are turned on illuminating the great structures. The River Danube serves as a good orientation landmark, with Buda on the hilly left bank and flat Pest on the right. Buda has maintained its old charm with many historical sites and landmarks, while Pest is the commercial center or downtown. Vaci Street, located in Pest, is a
