PREREQUISITES None COURSE PERSPECTIVE & DESCRIPTION Course description: This is a survey course about computers and information technology and their roles in society. This course introduces a historical perspective of hardware, software, information systems, Internet, and human resources and explores their integration and application in business and other segments of society. Students will be required to complete lab assignments using the PCs operating system, and several commonly used applications, such as word processors, spreadsheets, graphics presentations applications, Internet browsers and search engines.

Course objectives o At the end of this course, the students should be able to understand: o the importance of computers and their applications in daily life. computer devices (hardware) and the various types of computers. software and its applications. data, information and information processing cycle. concepts of computer networks, internet, and websites. computer viruses, worms, and computer crimes.

The students should be able to: edit a document using MS Word (exactly and quickly). make a datasheet (workbook) using MS Excel. make a good presentation using MS PowerPoint. develop a website using MS FrontPage. use the Internet services (web, email, search engines, ).

COURSE NORMS & EXPECTATIONS Attendance in class is mandatory. Students may arrive no later than 10 minutes Food is not permitted during class study time. Mobiles must be switched off and put away. Students exhibiting loud or unruly behavior will be dismissed from the class. All students must bring required course materials, writing instruments and Late assignments will have the grade reduced by 10% for each day they are late. No cheating will be permitted. See the Universitys policy regarding plagiarism. Important notice: Bring laptop to this class.

CONSULTATION/OFFICE HOUR - Teachers should decide consultation hours depending on the numbers of teaching hours and give students consultation or advice for their studies during break time or at any convenient time of the teachers. Teachers and students will also be able to exchange information after the class via Moodle, email or YM as arranged or by appointment. SELF STUDY - Students should spend at least 6 hours on their Self-study/group work for each session.
