Drama and Play as Therapy
Dramatherapy is one of the creative arts therapies that is used with children and adults
through theatre, mime, movement and role play. It aims to reduce stress, improve self
esteem, enable the exploration of choices and reaffirm the roles and expectations of
both individuals and groups.
Play Therapy emphasizes the importance of the play principle in the healing of children
who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Play Therapy where the therapist
'follows the child' enables the externalization at a symbolic level of past trauma, present
conflict or future fears. Playful attachment between mother and infant ensures that
children mature with a strong sense of self, independence and resilience. Dramatherapy
and Play Therapy in particular are important interventions with children who have been
neglected, abandoned or abused. Children are then able to re-experience more positive
attachment, exploration of sensory play and increasing confidence in dramatic play to
build positive Attachment and Identity.
