Council votes to increase fees for city maintenance
he Claremont City Council Tuesday night called into question the increasing burden of levied fees on Claremont taxpayers, with utility costs and other special charges continu- CITY ing to rise. The discussion, COUNCIL with a chorus of comments added by locals in attendance, was prompted by a vote to once again increase fees contributing to the citywide Landscaping and Lighting District (LLD).
The LLD program, first approved by Claremont voters in 1990, involves the maintenance and improvement of landscaping and street light by the city and private contractors. Maintenance projects and other developments are paid through a tax levied on citizens, the price varying depending on the size of a residents property. The method of calculating increases, also approved by voters, is based on the Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County Consumer Price Index (CPI) from March to March of each year. Though the council approved the increaseraising fees 2 percent in accordance with the CPIboth residents and council members expressed concern over the continually-rising burden for taxpayers. People can say what they want about cost of living, but the fact is many people are not getting cost of living increases, said Councilmember Corey Calaycay, who is opposed to the increase. I cant deny that if we were to just do away with it tomorrow we would be in a serious financial straight, but I have concerns.
Claremont voters approved continuing the LLD in 1997. Every year since then, the city has conducted a routine process for levying fees, including hiring an outside agency, NBS, to conduct an Engineers Report and determine rising costs. Historically, the fees rise every year, according to Mayor Larry Schroeder. This year is no different. The LLD budget has risen from an estimated $2.57 million in the 2011-2012 budget to about $2.65 million for 2012-2013. The change is due to a rise in utility costs of about $134,000, according to Kristin Turner, community and human services manager. Primarily due to water, Ms. Turner added. A majority of that budget, about 87 percent, is made up of fees gathered from residents, according to the citys report. Thirteen percent of the revenue is taken from the general fund, a 2 percent decrease from the current fiscal year. A general fund commitment is required every year. Though a sunset clause, or expiration date, on the charge was mentioned in the initial LLD discussion in 1989, ultimately, it was not implemented, according to City Attorney Sonia Carvalho. Though a sunset was never established, Mr. Calaycay noted that a council discussion on a sunset clause had been promised for June of 1995. That discussion never took place. Mr. Calaycay additionally took issue with the burden the assessments will have on residents if a sunset never occurs. These are the little things that will collectively impact people, Mr. Calaycay said. When it was implemented it was less than $100. In 1992, it was $100. By 2002 it was $117 and now, 10 years later, its already $157. In another 10 years at this rate, its going to be $200 a unit. It is increasing dramatically. Many residents present at the meeting echoed Mr. Calaycays views.
There is an issue of credibility I look at, said Carolyn Gonzales. Its only $3.12, but over 20 years...some people say its only a Starbucks coffee, but Ill tell you what, its about 3 pots of coffee. It adds up, drip by drip. Jim Merrylees urged the council to reconsider another hike as residents struggle with their financial situations. I am on a fixed income. The possibility is that the Obama administration will be reducing my medical benefits as far as my military retirement, Mr. Merrylees shared at the council meeting. I totally disagree with any increase to this assessment. Councilmember Sam Pedroza recognized the burden of paying taxes across the board, but felt paying fees to the district in order to maintain the beauty of the town is worth the expense. My house is worth a lot more than the $157 I am paying a year for this assessment because the house is right here in Claremont, Mr. Pedroza said. The LLD represents the quality of life, which is why its so nice to be here in Claremont. For $157 we get a lot of bang for the buck. Mr. Pedrozas sentiment was ultimately the view of some council members, who narrowly approved the 2 percent increase 3-2. Mayor Pro Tem Opanyi Nasiali and Mr. Calaycay voted in opposition. Though the council was split on residents contribution to the LLD, they agreed that the city needs to continue to explore further ways to eliminate expenses. It puts us in a very tough position. We know we cant get rid of the district because its necessary to maintain the things we like, said Mr. Nasiali, instead proposing, We need to look at how we are going to cut the cost of maintenance of these facilities.

The LLD was the only budgeted item that caused issue for some of the council. Councilmember Corey Calaycay was uncomfortable including the increased LLD fees, a burden shared by residents, before reviewing the engineers report and making a vote. A vote was set for the council meeting, which took place immediately following the budget workshop. After further discussion, Mr. Calaycay decided to rescind a motion to remove the assumed LLD costs for the 2013-2014 budget, though he remained concerned about the fees. Historically speaking, there is always an increase in the LLD, according to Mayor Larry Schroeder, who voted no along with Mr. Pedroza and Councilmember Joe Lyons. Mr. Ramos noted that assumptions needed to be made in order to present a balanced budget, reminding the council that changes will be made and presented for review by the council at least midway through and at the end of each year. We have the ability to correct as we go along, Mr. Ramos said. [The proposed budget] is a blueprint to guide us through the next 2 years...that we can adjust if circumstances were to change. Amendment proposed to building plan at Rich Products site

Planning Commission to review 50-foot building plan
he Claremont Planning Commission will review an amendment to the Village Expansion Plan Tuesday night, June 19, that would allow the construction of a proposed 50-foot building at Oberlin Avenue and First Street in Village West.
The proposed mixed-use property is vying to take over the vacant Rich Products Corporation building, purchased by the Denley Investments and Management Company at the start of 2011. The amendment would change the maximum height of buildings from 3 to 4 stories, or from 40 feet to a limit of 50-feet tall, not typically allowed in the citys mixed-use zones. Originally approved at 45 feet last July, the building to be brought before the commission on Tuesday would graze the height limit, if approved, at 50 feet. Nearby Hotel Casa 425 stands an estimated
40 feet, while with the parking structure adjacent to The Packing House stands 4 stories, approximately 35 feet tall from the ground to the structures handrail. The garages elevator tower is 56 feet. With a parking garage a part of the proposed buildings design, some residents were pleased with a potential solution to the Village Wests parking and traffic issues. Others voiced skepticism at a city council meeting held last July. Its not entirely fair to ruin one persons mountain view just to give another a mountain view, said Jason Ryan, a resident of the nearby Village Walk. Thursday, June 7 A homeowner in the 2000 block of Cape Cod Court was given a shock after finding a man crouched below a shattered bedroom window. The owner heard the sound of breaking glass around 8:45 a.m. and ran to the bedroom to locate the source. Upon being discovered, the man attempting to break-and-enter fled in a gray 4-door car with no hubcaps. He is described as a white male about 25 years old, 5 foot, 9 inches tall, with blond hair and a goatee. Friday, June 8 Police found what appeared to be a solo car crash on Grand Avenue north of Base Line Road early Tuesday morning, but it was only part of the story. Claremont police found the car with front-end damage, parked with its wheels up on the sidewalk, around 4:50 a.m. Both the driverRalph Monday, 23and passenger, complaining of headaches, gave police conflicting stories as to what had occurred, according to Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen. At a second crash site nearby, a woman told a California Highway Patrol officer on scene that she was the victim of a hit-and-run. Upon investigation, police determined the driver of the crash on Grand to be the one responsible for the hit-and-run. Mr. Monday was also found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for driving under the influence and the hit-and-run. Sunday, June 10 A black marker was a giveaway for 3 teens involvement in acts of vandalism at Wheeler Park Sunday evening. Police were notified of juveniles tagging the bleachers, handball wall and storage unit. Police found the teens sitting at the park with an abandoned black marker on the ground nearby. They admitted to the tagging and, after being cited and taken to the Claremont Police Department, were later released to parents. Tuesday, June 12 A suspicious man hanging around outside the Kiddie Academy, 663 E. Foothill Blvd., Tuesday morning caught the attention of employees. Police responded and arrested Ernest Gardner, 38, of Pomona, found to be under the influence of controlled substance, on parole for possession of methamphetamine and with an outstanding warrant for a Claremont municipal violation. ***** A 20-year-old victim helped lead Claremont police to the capture of 2 crooks. The woman was standing on the sidewalk outside of Wolfes Market, 160 W. Foothill Blvd., when the female passenger of a gold Ford Focus forcibly grabbed the victims cell phone out of her hand before the car quickly sped away. The victim provided the vehicles license plate number to police, who were able to identify the crooks and place the car on a wanted list. The next day, Corona police contacted Claremont officers after finding the vehicle in their city. Claremont police responded and arrested Elizabeth Brown, 35, of Corona, and Calvin Smock, 31, of Pomona. Unfortunately, the stolen cell phone has not been located. Ms. Brown is being held at the Claremont jail for $50,000 bail while Mr. Smock is being held without bail due to his status as a parolee at large. ***** A 31-year-old man was arrested after being found setting up house in a vacant dorm room at Berger Hall, 413 E. Sixth St. Jason Herd, of San Francisco, had previously been contacted by police about trespassing onto the Claremont Colleges campuses, but ignored the warnings. He was arrested for the trespassing.

A trio of suspicious customers prompted an employee of the Optometric Vision Center, 1420 N. Claremont Blvd., to contact police around 2:30 p.m. A man and 2 women entered the business and began asking questions and seemed nervous, the employee told police. She suspected the group was involved with a recent burglary at the optometry center, resulting in an estimated
$600 of stolen property. The trio noticed the police outside and attempted to flee, but were too late. Agustin Cerda, 37, Cynthia Lopez, 32 and Susana Castaneda, 18, all of Pomona, were arrested for attempted burglary. Ms. Lopez was also arrested for possession of a meth pipe and an outstanding warrant for driving without a license.

arly on in life, I realized that my dad was different from other dads. He could quickly transform a chunk of clay into a spry looking creature with expression. He was able to make a coin disappear in front of my eyes only to find it behind my ear. He believed in the supernatural and had the oddest ability to magnetize objects with his hands. Our walls were covered with his colorful paintings, and our cupboards were filled with cups and bowls he had made. His talent infused my childhood and gave me the distinct impression that he was magical.
As I grew up, I realized that not every dad was magical like mine, but most dads had distinct talents. Some played music or fixed things. Others coached sports teams and cooked family dinners. Some dads told great stories or made awesome fires in the fireplace. Most dads, like mine, were really good at telling very bad jokes. According to a website devoted to dad jokes, this type of joke is so embarrassing that only a dad can truly find it entertaining. Examples include knee-slappers like last night I dreamed I was a mufflerI woke up exhausted; Ive just been diagnosed as colorblindit came out of the purple, and a classic at our house, what did the fish say when it hit a wall? Dam! Aside from meaning father, dad also signifies one who is the top man or boss. This could be the rea-

Return power to the people
Dear Editor: All contributions by corporations to any poltical committee or for any political purpose should be forbidden by law. Teddy Roosevelt That statement was true then, and it is no less true today. It is not just the money that is spent by corporations that is corrupting and corrosive to the democratic process; it is the obscene amount of money that is spent by individuals and groups in the name of free speech that is being used in an attempt to buy elections, influence and power that should be objected to. When we were 13 colonies, the colonists rebelled against the edicts of the king. Now we have a new form of aristocracy that is just as dangerous and perhaps more incidious than the king: it is the super wealthy in whatever form that seeks to rule us and control us through the use of money to buy our electeds. The Supreme Court at this very moment is hearing a case that gives us hope. The state of Montana claims that a state may regulate campaign expenditures in its own state for state and local elections in order to control corruption. Claremont should pass a resolution in support of overturning Citizens United. Claremont is not isolated and protected from the outside influences of this danger. Under Citizens United, money from another state or from a foreign country can be used through a political committee to overwhelm our local ordinance regarding campaign finance limitations in local city council elections. This is not democracy and, in fact, endangers the very existence of our Republic. The city of Claremont needs to join in on the national effort to overturn Citizens United. If we are to keep ourselves free,

Dear Editor: Clean air protections are being attacked in the US Senate. A vocal minority is threatening to eliminate an historic regulation issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This regulation is a landmark Clean Air Act achievement for public health, and we need your help to fight and make sure it remains. Stand up for Clean Air: Send our senators a message now! Earlier this year, the EPA set an historic standard, regulating mercury and toxic air pollutants from power plants. This standard came after decades of delay and sets strict limits on mercury and toxic emissions. This standard will save thousands of lives and help those with asthma and bronchitis breathe easier. Despite resounding support from the public, Senator Jim Inhofe has introduced a bill that would nullify this historic advance. For years, the League has worked to fight for clean air and protect the Clean Air Act. Now that action has been taken to strengthen this law, some senators want to take a step back! Tell our senators you want clean air in our community. You can make a difference! Send a message to our senators today. Tell them to oppose S.J. Res 37. Tell them to limit

Ruth Thomson
Ruth Thomson, a longtime Pilgrim Place resident and a cheerful, capable woman who enjoyed a long and productive YWCA career, died at home on May 29, 2012. Reflecting on the last chapter of life, Ms. Thomson wrote, Death is a part of living. Grief is normal and to be expectedand experiencedbut it is important to be a part of the living that goes on. Ms. Thomsons father, a physician, delivered her into the world on October 23, 1913 in Syracuse, Nebraska, where she lived until beginning studies at the University of Nebraska in 1931. After earning her bachelors degree in education there, she went on to earn a master of social work (MSW) from Washington Universitys George Warren Brown School of Social Work in 1952. Her professional life began as an elementary school teacher in Nebraska. During this time, she began volunteering at the YWCA, which led to a position as business and professional girls director in Waterloo, Iowa beginning in 1942. As this was during World War II, Ms. Thomson helped organize numerous programs and events, such as picnics, for workers in nearby plants that had war contracts necessitating long and exhausting hours. We made gallons and gallons of potato salad, Ms. Thomson once wrote about this experience. Have you tried cutting up potatoes and onions for that much salad? Additionally, about this era, Ms. Thomson remembered, being a listening ear to young wives and girlfriends whose husbands or fiancs were killed, and even more trying, missing. What followed her post at the Waterloo YWCA was a lifelong and deeply heartfelt career that took Ms. Thomson to YWCAs in Gary, Indiana; St. Louis, Missouri; Cleveland, Ohio; to the National Board of the YWCA in New York; and, finally, to Hartford, Connecticut where she served for 12 years as executive director before retiring in 1976. When the city of Hartford claimed the YWCA building for redevelopment, leaving the organization without a brick-and-mortar site, many feared the disappearance of its programs and services. But with her unwavering belief in the YWCA, Ms. Thomson rose to the great challenge and kept it alive, arranging for programs to be held in local churches, libraries, schools and even insurance offices. During her admirable career and beyond, Ms. Thomson received substantial recognition for her dedication to empowering women and girls and striving for equal-

son joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work, where she taught courses in social work administration. Over the years, she served on numerous boards and committees, including those of the Greater Hartford Council of Churches, the New York Times Farm Camp, which introduces children to food sources, and New Hope Manor, a home for teenage girls struggling with addiction. When she came to Claremont, Ms. Thomsons characteristic involvement in many activities continued. She served as chairman of the Claremont Committee on Aging, president of the Claremont League of Women Voters and head of the Senior Peer Counseling Advisory Council. As a member of the Board of Friends of Claremont Senior Programs, she was an instrumental fund-raiser. At Pilgrim Place, she served as town hall ity and social justice for all. Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher
Longtime Claremont, Pomona and La Verne resident Peggy Heimerl died on May 29, 2012 in Arcadia. She was 90. Born in Pomona on March 27, 1922 as Mary Margaret (but always known as Peggy), she and her siblings, Helen and Richard (Bud), were the children of Ethelbert Johnson and Margaret Parke. Mrs. Heimerl attended Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy; Pomona College; California State University, Los Angeles; and Claremont Graduate School (now University). On November 1, 1942, she married Edward Heimerl in Pomona. Mr. Heimerl served in the US Navy during World War II. After the war, Mrs. Heimerl and her husband lived in Pomona until they built their own home in Claremont, moving here in 1948 and raising 2 children, Richard (born in 1944) and Diane (born in 1946). After her husbands death in August 1959, Mrs. Heimerl returned to school and began teaching fifth and sixth grade at Sumner Elementary School in Claremont. She retired in 1984 and eventually moved to La Verne. Mrs. Heimerl was very active in the local PTA and Park Avenue Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed her involvement in square-dancing, duplicate bridge, ladies barbershop quartet, local elections, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Claremont, ceramics, linedancing and various artistic endeavors. She loved music and was a gifted poet. In retirement, she traveled throughout the world and stayed active with her large extended family. She wrote legacy letters to her grandchildren (and later to other family members) once a week while they were in college, and then once a month until the last few years of her life. Mrs. Heimerl is survived by her sister, Helen Johnson Setzer; her son, Richard Heimerl; her grandchildren, Heather

A graveside service for 56-year Pomona resident Jeanette Ulrich will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Oak Park Cemetery. Ms. Ulrich, the mother of longtime Mountain View Elementary School teacher Julie Ulrich-Riley, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at her Pomona home. She was 77. Local dentist donates computer to essay contest winner
hile high school graduations tend to garner quite a bit of attention, the final days of the elementary school year are often overlooked.
Administrators at Claremonts primary schools, however, do their best in the days leading up to summer vacation to plan exciting activities that reward students for their efforts during the past year. The COURIER stopped by Vista del Valle Elementary School on Wednesday, June 13, the second-to-last day of school, and found a whirl of activity. Along with its annual awards ceremony, the school was also holding its yearly carnival. Festivities ranged from a watermelon-spitting contest to a competition in which students tossed water balloons at a clown. The fun was a welcome respite after a year dominated by state testing. Two award ceremonies were held throughout the day, one aimed at students in the lower grades and the other organized for students in fourth through fifth grades. Although there were awards given for perfect attendance, Vista Principal Dave Stewart noted that, in gen-

eral, the school doesnt honor students just for showing up. Instead, students were lauded for a range of activities, from earning good grades to participating in the band to
exercising outside of school. Awards were also given to students for their writing, thanks to a contest sponsored by the Claremont Dental Institute. They were asked to write essays about good deeds they have performed, with the top 3 students winning prizes. Dr. Vijay Patel was happy to present a brand-new computer to first place winner Norma Rodriguez, who was also the first-place winner in the schools Brian Clay essay contest earlier in the year. Asked whether she plans to be a writer, Norma demurred. Instead, she hopes to be a marine biologist. Norma and the second and third place winners Reign Black, who won a bike, and Isabel Gonzalez, who received a toothbrushare all fourth graders in Pat Holbrooks class. Ms. Holbrook, who is retiring this year, says she has always emphasized the importance of writing. Good writing skills results in good reading and vocabulary skills, leading to higher academic performances and test scores throughout a students education. If you can write well, everything else falls into place, she said.

El Espiritu celebrates 100 years in print
laremont High School graduates from any era will find something for them in this years edition of El Espiritu, the schools yearbook.
Though it boasts myriad changes that create a more dynamic and modern book, this years edition is also notable for its strong ties to the Claremont High School of years past, as it celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of El Espiritus first publication. We wanted to tie the book back to its roots, said Jack Shih, editor in chief of design and Class of 2012 graduate. With that in mind, this years edition was given the theme Ever Changing, and abounds with then-and-now photographs of the school, its students and the city.
Most of the stories tied into the books hundredth year, said Abby Ernst, editorin-chief of copy. And many of them are about how people have changed. Stories were given a different formatting from previous years that is reminiscent of the Q-and-A layout seen in popular magazines like Seventeen. A special section about the schools Alumni Society features perspectives and meditations on the school and its growth from graduates whose most recent edition of the yearbook is decades old. Its a throwback to an older Claremont, Abby said. The cover of the book itself is a reimagined version of the Claremont citrus label that is featured prominently on the side of the Villages Packing House. Its so Claremont, she added. While the book has much in the way of historical content, it also features new additions for members of the digital gener-
ation. Many pages feature QR codes that can be scanned with a smartphone for access to online content that includes videos of school events and features about life as a student. In 30 years, you can scan a QR code, and see a video about the WolfCast, Jack said, referring to the brief news segment produced by students that is broadcast to classrooms with announcements daily. Other features include a flipbook image of a leaf that grows and expires with the seasons along the books bottom edge, following a total restructuring of the books content that is based on the years chronology rather than on separate classes. The book also boasts the inclusion of captions with photographs, among other additions. Observers may notice that last years edition of the book was billed as only the 97th volume. But an article in this years
edition explains that a careful correction of a mislabeling made somewhere in decades past made certain that this years edition was the hundredth, rather than the ninety-eighth. I love it, and I hope everyone else does, said Jack, who estimates having contributed over 500 hours to the books development. It sets a new standard, agreed Abby. I hope it encourages future yearbook staffs to make a better book than we did. Jack and Abby wish to acknowledge yearbook advisor David Sawhill and the rest of the yearbook staff for their hard work on the project. Everyone was so dedicated this year, Abby said.

Some 530 CHS students, 29 students from San Antonio High School and more than 40 Claremont Adult School graduates were sent off to their futures amid a flurry of pomp and circumstance. Student representatives and school administrators took to the podium to share memories and provide inspiration. Adding to the positivity were student performances such as an all-male a cappella interpretation of Yael Naims New Soul and an instrumental version of We Are Young by fun. CHS Principal Brett OConnor opted to leave the graduating class with a bit of wisdom he gleaned from Karl Pillemers book, 30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans. Mr. Pillemer conducted extensive surveys and interviews with senior citizens, turning the results into a book highlighting their hard-won philosophies, priorities and perspectives. Find satisfying work, Mr. OConnor advised the outgoing students, adding that selecting a career based only on financial motivations is one of the biggest mistakes. Mr. OConnor shared a few other lessons, urging students to understand that happiness is a choice and encouraging them to express their appreciation to loved ones while they are still living. The principal brought a hush to the crowd by mentioning a student who is no longer living, MacLean Whittle, who would have graduated had he not died last summer in a plane crash. MacLean, who was a member of the CHS Choir, was headed with his family to visit Brigham Young University. A happier moment came when San Antonio High School student TeVin Woods, who served this year as a student board member for the CUSD school board, shared how the contin-
uation high school changed his life. TeVin started at San Antonio this August after moving to Claremont from Tennessee. He moved in with his brother, who is attending Claremont School of Theology, to get his off-track life back in order. My path hasnt been easy. I lived life by the minute, with no future in mind, he said. At San Antonio, he found academic guidance amid the kind of teacher-to-student ratio that is only possible in a small, specialized environment. TeVin found an appreciation for eating healthfully and living mindfully through the schools Food Justice Program. He also found new confidence through his time as a student representative for the CUSD board. TeVin, who feels like a new man, plans to volunteer for AmeriCorps, and then head to community college. He ended his tribute with a rap about the school he has come to love. Understand when I say/Dont underestimate San Antonio any day. Though salutatorian Josephine Chen said she is confident each graduate will accomplish something in one way or another, other student speakers acknowledged that these are times of uncertainty. In these tough economic times, paying for college can be a struggle. Nicole Clark, who will head to Yale this summer, plans to spend the next several weeks applying for as many scholarships as possible. Brayan Lopez will be funding his future college education via the US military. He has joined the air force and leaves for training in Texas at the end of August. Though he is eager to meet the future, CHS has been a great school, Brayan said. He has particularly loved Kermit Dixons British Literature class. Along with developing a fondness for classics like Beowulf and Wuthering Heights, Brayan learned a crucial lesson from Ms. Dixon, whom he says radiates passion for her subject matter. I learned to just enjoy life.

CHS grads take full advantage of challenging IB experience
hen 536 students graduated from Claremont High School on Thursday, June 14, it was easy to view those receiving diplomas as a sea of caps and gowns.
As any proud parent or loving family member knows, however, each young person participating in the timeworn ritual is very much an individual, with a story all their own. For 2 of these new grads, the story
includes a new chapter in the history of CHS, an innovative course of study called the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Pranay Yeturu and Nicole Clark are among the second crop of students to receive diplomas from the 2-year program initiated at CHS in 2009. The IB program offers participating juniors and seniors advanced academics while emphasizing writing, interdisciplinary learning, teamwork, community engagement and a global perspective. IB students enjoy high acceptance rates at the schools of their choice and may be granted college-level credits for

their work. This years grads will head for Brown, Smith, Wellesley, Harvey Mudd, UC Berkeley and beyond. Students success stems from balance
nternational Baccalaureate students like the 50-plus who walked at the recent commencement are expected to strive for qualities like curiosity, open-mindedness, thoughtfulness and balance.
Pranay, who is going on to Pomona College after graduating with a cumulative 4.53 GPA, exemplifies the latter. His grades reflect a huge quantity of study time and an equal effort boning up on issues and current affairs to support his passionate 4-year engagement with CHSs speech and debate program. His favorite event is humorous interpretation, where participants adapt a piece of literature into a 10-minute, one-person show. Despite his academic dedication, Pranay has embraced the old adageAll work and no play make Jack a dull boy. A fan of rap and hiphop, he can bust out a mean beat-box. In fact, Pranay provided rhythmic accompaniment for a group of boys who performed an a cappella version of Yael Naims New Soul at commencement. Pranay also played varsity tennis for 4 years, helping the Wolfpack win its 7th consecutive Sierra League title and proving himself to be pretty damn talented, according to head boys varsity tennis coach Louise Miclat. Pranay knew how to get the team riled up as far as spirit goes, Coach Miclat said. He is always the one to say, Come on, this is silly. We can win today! The same intelligence that helped the student athlete excel in the classroom is evident on the courts as well, Coach Miclat noted.
He is so smarthe is one of the most intellectual teenagers Ive known, she said. Whenever he plays the game, he knows exactly what he does wrong and fixes it immediately. Teachers also rave about Pranay. His mathematics instructor and IB coordinator Linda Saeta said he brings immense curiosity and a happy, quizzical demeanor to class. Hes just really open to a lot of interesting ideas, and he likes to put things together in a very creative way, she said. In a stats class, hell put together numbers and trends in a way thats sort of in the 4th dimension. Pranay says he chose the IB program for the interconnectedness of the curriculum. The debating and beat-boxing champ was also drawn to the emphasis on communication something at which he is adept. He can make you believe almost anything, Ms. Saeta said. Given his persuasive power, it is fitting that Pranay plans to study public policy and office in college. While he is looking forward to new endeavors, Pranay will miss CHS and his fellow IB students. All the kids in IB have a lot of classes together, so its a little community in its own right, he said. Its not a bad thing, because the students are intelligent and fun to be around. Moving on, giving back The International Baccalaureate Programs emphasis on community engagement is what appealed to 2012 CHS grad Nicole Clark. IB worked for who I was as a personthats why I was successful, said Nicole who, after earning a cumulative 4.52 GPA, heads to Yale this fall. Nicole coaches youth volleyball and, as a freshman, became one of 8 teen cofounders of Simply Savant, a nonprofit

organization providing educational support to at-risk kids. At first, the aim of Simply Savant was narrow: provide books for local Boys & Girls Clubs. When members realized the clubs lacked academic resources, they developed a summer program in which volunteers teach English, math and science to youths in fifth through eighth grades from 8 a.m. to lunchtime for 4-6 weeks. This summer, Simply Savant, which now has about 40-50 members, will operate camps at Boys & Girls Clubs in Pomona, Pasadena, La Puente and Fair Oaks. It ended up being really perfect, Nicole said of the teaching opportunity. Ive met a lot of very bright kids, a lot of whom have parents that arent very involved in their lives. I felt humbled by the opportunity to teach them. Nicole has discovered theres a Boys & Girl Club in New Haven, Connecticut, so she plans to take Simply Savant to the national level when she heads to Yale. Founding and maintaining a nonprofit organization is a daunting task for anyone, let alone a teen. But Nicole, who served as president of the IB Club, is amazingly efficient, said Ms. Saeta. Nicole is someone who sees a complicated project and then gets it done, she said. If we needed to do

an orientation for the incoming class or about the extended essay for the juniors, shed say, Ill get it organized and 24 hours later everyone knew where they were going and what they were doing. Nicole, who attended Foothill Country Day School through eighth grade, is a San Dimas resident. She chose to attend high school in Claremont after hearing about the IB program at CHS, one of only 77 IB World Schools in California. Shes been happy with her choice, and her extracurricular pursuits have dovetailed perfectly with many assignments. For instance, when it came time for her to write her IB extended essay (a 10-15 page project to be written between the junior and senior year) Nicole wrote about California education and reflected on her Simply Savant experiences. The IB curriculum has been challenging but rewarding, Nicole said.
I liked how deeply we approached subjects. Its no longer just surface-level or a cursory examination of topics but an in-depth exploration of ideas and what our peers have to say, she explained. As she moves onto college, where she will major in economics, physics or global affairs, Nicole leaves behind some great CHS memories. In hindsight, IB is a lot like having a school within a school, she said. Its a close group of about 60 people in your grade, and Ive developed really close friendships with all of them.
