Analysis of Foundations
This music video has a lot of different camera shots. The camera uses a medium wide shot to establish the location and also establish the characters within the music video. This allows the audience to see where the characters are in context to the locations. They also used close up shots to show the emotions that the characters within the music video are Medium Wide shot conveying. Also it showed close up of their hands to show what they are doing. Also it showed us close ups of items around the flat. This allows the audience to see what the emotions they are conveying so they can either empathise with them or sympathise for them. They use hand held POV shots from the perspective of the boyfriend. This makes it more realistic for the audience as the shaking of the shot makes it as if though we are seeing it through the boyfriends eyes. They use the rule of thirds a lot throughout the music video. Which in my opinion is really effective as it constantly allows the audience to see where the characters in relation to the location. Also they use a lot of eye level shots to show that we are on the same level as her and that also the boyfriend and the girlfriend have the same level of power amongst each other. They also use a lot of pull focus to put Pull focus emphasis on one thing over another show that it is significant. For example the healthy but minimalistic flower shows their weak relationship. They also use a lot stop frame animation within the music video which in my opinion is used to High angle shot engage the audience to watch the video and enjoy it. They also use high angle shots to show the vulnerability of a person whilst they are asleep.

Editing was also used within the video to make it more realistic and effective. They used mainly short takes as the song had a steady flow. So the short takes makes it really effective and makes the music video flow well with the song. They also used slightly longer takes to make it clearer to the audience what was going on. They made some of the shots out of focus to symbolise that their relationship is going through a patchy period. I believe that Out of focus video consists of a lot cross-cutting from when it goes to her singing and then them in bed etc. Also the song as whole uses continuity editing as through the video consist of her singing about her relationship falling apart and at the end of it she leaves him and goes her own way. They used a lot of stop frame editing using toy figures and socks to symbolise the break up. This allows the audience what is happening within the music video. The mise-en-scene in my opinion went well with the song. The location for a start was perfect it seems to be a flat that a young couple are sharing with loads of shoes and mess everywhere. This makes the song really effective as the location goes well with the type of song and makes the music video feel right. The costumes of the characters in the song also go well as the clothes they were wearing matched their appearance and the personality that they had, which went well with the type of song the music video was. The lighting was predominately high key lighting I believe that this was due to the factor that this video was mainly set in the morning. Also it could symbolise that she is search for a new beginning. The emotions conveyed as well goes well with the song as her facial expressions match the tone of voice and the lyrics with in the music video. The sound is a major part of the music video, as you would presume from the fact that it is a music video. The lyrics of the song are easy to understand and from the music the song is about a relationship that is falling about and the extract from the song Im holding onto the cracks in our foundation backs up my statement of what the song is about. The tempo and the beat of the song however can be classed as contrapuntal as the beat is relatively fast and the tempo is upbeat and the song is about a failing relationship. The tone of voice goes well with the song as Kate Nash the person who sung the song is iconic for her songs being basically talking with a melody and makes the song really flow together.

The music video represents the artist in the same manner as all her songs as all of her songs tend to be about love and this song is one of her better-known ones and did well when it was released. It terms of representation through the above technical elements it represents younger adults as people who are responsible as they live in their own house however the video also conveys stereotypically that all young relationships do not end that well. Which in modern day society is it is true as most young relationships dont last forever. The genre of the song is indie-pop which is signified in the song in my opinion by the way that the characters are dressed and the way that the song is sung and the melody behind the song. In terms of my knowledge I did not notice any intertextuality within this specific music video. The audience received this song really well having a positive response globally. Also according to YouTube the song was received really well by the general public. STUART HALL

The Song does use binary opposition within the music video as Kate Nash in the video has her boyfriend present. They use Binary opposition to show a typical relationship. It also shows how one person puts a lot of effort into the relationship whilst the other has not. This makes the music video effective as it shows the underlying meaning of the song. The dominant ideologies of this song has to be how a relationship does not always go the way that it should have and also about how not both parts of a relationship give a 100% all of the time.
