6. 6.1 6.1.1

TEST AND INSPECTION Retention of solid glass beads Principle Glass beads shall be allowed to fall onto the paint layer before it is dry, and the mass of beads retained shall be determined after 1 h and after 7 days.

6.1.2

Apparatus and materials Solid glass beads, according to the Gulf standard mentioned in (2.2). Dispenser, comprising two plates, one fixed and one movable, and two screens for beads distribution. The plates are 3 mm in thickness, and perforated with similar holes of 4 mm diameter (see Fig. 1). Container, of base 70 mm x 150 mm x 40 mm. Glass test panel, prepared as in item (4). Suitable scrubbing brush. Scrubbing apparatus (see fig. 2). Fix the perforated movable plate in such a way as to be under the fixed plate with its perforations not directly under the fixed plate. Scatter a suitable quantity (ca 4 gm) of solid glass beads (using a brush) enough to fill the space between the two plates. Work out the dispenser by sliding the movable plate till the holes meet together, then the sieves will distribute the beads in a regular way. Fix the container in the dispenser centre, put the dispenser to work again as stated above, weigh the container to nearest mg (m1), return the beads to the dispenser using the brush to ensure that all beads have returned to the dispenser.

6.1.3

Procedure

GULF STANDARD

GS 561/1994

Prepare the test plate and coat with the paint to be tested. Put the test plate in the dispenser centre, adjust the perforated movable plate to allow the solid glass beads, to fall freely on the coated plate, note that this step does not consume more than 20 seconds, let stand for about one hour. Remove the dispenser and, using the scrubbing brush, lightly brush the paint panel. Collect any non-adherent glass beads in paint coat and weigh the beads to the nearest milligram (m2). Keep the painted test panel, with the adhering glass beads, at 25 2oC and 60 5% relative humidity for 7 days. Weigh the test panel to the nearest milligram (m3). Fix the test panel uppermost on the scrubbing apparatus (see Fig. 2) so as to be under the scrubbing brush. Allow the scrubbing brush to come in toutch with the paint coating. Place a 500 g weight on the scrubbing brush, and start the scrubbing apparatus for 100 revolutions. Weigh the test panel to the nearest milligram (m4) and measure the total and the brushed areas of the paint test panel to the nearest square millimeter. Calculate percentage of the glass beads removed by the equation: 100 x (m3 - m4) x At Percentage of beads removed = (m1 - m2) x As

Where: AS At m1 m2 m3 m4 6.2 is the area scrubbed by the brush. is the area of the beaded paint panel. is the mass (in g) of the glass beads discharged by the dispenser over the test area. is the mass (in g) of the non-adherent glass beads. is the mass (in g) of the glass test panel before brushing. is the mass (in g) of the glass test panel after brushing.

Determination of luminance factor Determination of luminance factor shall be according to the method described in the Gulf standard mentioned in (2.2), provided that the test panel and the test sample shall be prepared as in item (4).

6.3 6.3.1

Abrasion resistance Principle Allow the grit to impinge on the paint coating then examine it for damage.

GULF STANDARD

GS 561/1994

6.3.2

Apparatus and materials Standard sand grit according to the American standard. Funnel, with an orifice of 203.2 mm diameter and internal diameter of 91 mm for the open end to which is attached a straight tube of the same internal diameter (see Fig. 3). The tube is fitted with a shutter of an aperture diameter 91 mm immediately below the funnel and 0.9 mm away from the open end of the tube. Stand, for holding the funnel and the attached tube in a vertical position. Stand, suitable for holding the test panel at an angle of 45o to the horizontal. Prepare the glass test panel as described in item (4). Secure the test panel at an angle of 45o to the horizontal. Place the funnel in the stand in such a manner that the bottom of the tube is 25 mm from the paint film and not less than 25 mm from the edge of the test panel. Close the shutter and place 2 litres from the grit in the funnel. Open the shutter fully and rapidly to allow the grit to fall down the tube in a continuous stream and impinge the paint film, repeat this procedure. Remove the panel after two passes of grit and examine by the naked eye to determine whether the test panel can be seen through the paint coating.

6.3.3

Procedure

6.4 6.4.1

Weathering resistance Preparation of test panels Test panels shall be used and prepared according to the Gulf standard mentioned in (2.5), and the test shall be carried out as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in (2.6).

6.5 6.5.1

Bleeding resistance Principle The paint is applied to the bitumen surface and the paint film is examined for discolouration after 72 h.

6.5.2

Apparatus and materials Bitumen according to approved standards, in a quantity sufficient to fill a metal tray to a depth of at least 6 mm. Metal tray, of minimum size 150 x 200 mm x 6 mm. The walls of the tray should be uniform. Hot plate, capable of maintaining a temperature of 571 10oC. Straightedge knife of steel with a minimum length of 200 mm.

GULF STANDARD

GS 561/1994

6.5.3

Procedure Heat the bitumen in the metal tray on the hot plate, to 175 10oC. When the bitumen is molten, spread it with the straightedge knife to give a smooth surface, level with the walls of the tray. Allow the bitumen to cool and condition at a temperature of 52 2oC for 42 h. Secure a strip of transparent tape of 25 mm width across the bitumen surface, approximately 25 mm from and parallel to the 200 mm side of the metal tray. Place two steel shims of a thickness 350 so as to make a right angle with the tape edge with 40 mm distance between them. With the aid of a doctor blade, apply a film of the paint across the tape and over the bitumen surface with one pass of the blade. Allow the Paint film to dry in a horizontal position at 25 2oC and 60 5% relative humidity for 72 h. Examine the paint film over bitumen and on the transparent tape. Record the difference in colour, if any.

6.6 6.6.1

Resistance to petroleum materials Principle Place drops from petroleum materials (kerosene) on the paint film for 24 h, and examine to detect any change in characteristics.

6.6.2 6.6.3

Materials Kerosene, absorbent paper. Procedure Prepare two glass test panels and coate them with the paint to be examined as described in item (4). Allow to dry for 72 h. Place drops from kerosene, about 0.5 mm each, on one panel and leave for 24 h. Clean kerosene drops on the panel with the absorbent paper. Examine the film by the naked eye for presence of blistering, breaking, tenderness or deterioration, using the non-immersed film as a reference.

6.7 6.7.1

Resistance to washing with scrubbing using tap water Preparation of test panels Test panels shall be prepared and used as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in (2.7).

GULF STANDARD

GS 561/1994

6.8 6.8.1

Resistance to salt solution Principle The paint to be tested shall be applied to a glass test panel which is subsequently immersed in a saline solution for 24 h. The resistance of the film to scratch shall be immediately assessed and after a recovery period, changes in other properties shall be determined.

6.8.2

Materials Sodium chloride solution 10% (w/w). Absorbent paper. Prepare two glass test panels and coat with the paint to be tested as in item 4 and allow them to dry for 72 h. One of the test panels is immersed for 24 h, in a suitable container containing 10% sodium chloride solution. The container shall be covered during this period. Remove the panel from the solution and dry with the absorbent paper. Allow a period of 5 min then carry out the scratch test as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.8, using a load of 1 kg. Examine the paint films for penetration to the substrate and report the results. Allow the test panel to stand for another period of 3 h, then re-examine the paint film by the naked eye for signs of change in colour or blistering, using the nonimmersed test panel for comparison and report occurance of any deterioration. Also examine the paint film for any signs of tenderness or crispiness, using the nonimmersed test panel for comparison, and report occurance of any deterioration.
