Resource Efficiency in the Process Industry

Dr Paul-Joel Derian Chairman of SusChem Board

A European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry

SusChem Strategic Intent

The European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry seeks to boost chemistry, biotechnology and chemical engineering research, development and innovation across Europe. SusChem is a multi stakeholder platform to address societal challenges with sustainable chemistry solution creation, using the value chain to connect technology towards the innovation and its societal implementation.

Societal Challenges Innovations along the Value Chain

SusChem Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda The objective of this strategy is to accelerate innovation adoption and its societal value by steering towards programs and public private partnerships, that connect value chain related partners from Industry, Academia, centers of expertise and regions to ensure proof of concept/demonstrations in reality conditions. Strategy seeks to support EU 2020 Strategy for sustainable growth, amongst others the flagship initiatives on Innovation Union and Resource Efficiency and to focus the Research & Innovation Agenda on major societal challenges (natural resource scarcity, environment, Green House Gases, energy, )

Resource Efficiency in the Process Industry

Enable new technologies and innovations that will do more with less
Less fossile fuels and non renewable raw materials

By 2030

More renewables, biomaterials and recyclable materials

By 2030

Ambitious targets for a Public Private Partnership on resource efficient economy

do more with less

A drastic efficiency improvement of the CO2-equivalent footprint, up to 50% towards 2030 based on todays level 2010 (achieved across key value chains) Reduce dependency on fossil feedstock by a 20% increase in share of renewable feedstock in 2030 compared to current level, obtained from non-food competing agriculture and alternative sources (end of life recyclables). A 30% reduction in primary energy consumption from current levels by 2030 through a combination of e.g. process intensification, novel energy-saving processes, and alternative (renewable) energy sources within the process cycle

By 2030 a 20% reduction versus current levels in net usage per end application for mineral, chemical raw materials and auxiliary materials (e.g. water) by increasing chemical and physical transformation yields and recycling along the key value chains. Resource and Energy Efficiency Partnership

Resource and Energy Efficiency Partnership, REP is a group of European associations , ETPs, and organisations motivated to promote resource and energy efficiency in process industries .

In October 2010, REP set up a position paper which was distributed to Commissioners De Gucht, Geoghegan-Quinn, Oettinger, Potocnik and Tajani

Summary

The Process Industry needs to be addressed more strongly and ensure a synchronized approach with the discrete manufacturing industry, to address the manufacturing challenges of Europe SusChem and its partners are in an excellent position to drive this with a full value chain approach The SusChem Technology Platform is ready to make a concrete contribution to the EU 2020 Policy implementation We are ready to design and drive a concrete Public Private Partnership to boost innovation on Resource Efficiency in the Process Industry
