Costa Rican Institute of Electricity Case study

Grupo ICE is the sole provider of electricity serving over 4 million citizens, and the biggest telecom company in Costa Rica.

The PS 1006 contains a 19 surback that can house up to six hotplugged rectifiers, a V/A meter or controller and an LVD device. Two configurations are available: Basic shelf I includes a 19 3U shelf (surback) with up to six rectifiers, a digital V/A meter and an electronic LVD device. Basic shelf II includes a 19 3U shelf with up to six rectifiers ,SC 1006 controller and an electronic LVD device. Features One to six hot-swap rectifiers. Active current sharing among rectifiers. Universal input voltage.

Customer Profile
Founded in 1949, Grupo ICE is a Costa Rican state-owned holding company that controls assets in electric energy generation, transmission and distribution. Grupo ICE owns 100% of the transmission systems in the country and provides energy to 39% of the population. In telecommunications, it services 95% of the population. It offers national telephony services for fixed and mobile lines, public pay phones, international telephony and internet connection.

The Challenge
A solution that will insure production centers are connected to control centers at all times. The systems were installed in tough terrain volcanic areas with constant exposure to dirt, dust, smoke and humidity. A mandatory demand before purchase was that the products must withstand such conditions and remain consistent and reliable. In addition systems must comply with the companys strict specs and requirements.

A built in dual 70A Electronic Low Voltage Disconnect device (ELVD) for battery protection. A high-performance, hot swap system controller (SC 1006) that measures, monitors and controls: voltages, current, power, battery, temperature parameters etc. RS232 (SC1006) or TCP/IP communication (SC 1006 NET). Temperature compensation enhances battery life. Battery current limit. Up to two battery sets handled in one system.

The solution
90 units of PS 1006 and 10 1UDC rectifiers were installed in the electrical division. 600 units of PS 1006 and 8 units of PS 2012 rectifiers were installed in the Telecom division.

Automatic and pre-programmed battery test (for each battery set). Automatic and pre-programmed equalizing charging mode. Comprehensive remote control and monitoring of the system using a dedicated graphical interface (GeMSi, PSM-DC 1006). Breaking alert by modem (optional). Batter/load terminals protected by a dedicated thermalmagnetic circuit breaker.

Power System 1006 (PS 1006)

The PS 1006 power system provides clean DC power to sensitive equipment, and at the same time charges the battery bank and supplies backup power during mains failure.
