June 18, 2012 Executive Summary: Top Policy Priorities of 2012 ABI Conference Attendees In a poll conducted by the

Iowa Policy Institute attendees at the 2012 Iowa Association of Business and Industry conference weighed on what they think the top policy priorities are for Iowa businesses and industries in the upcoming fall elections. The federal deficit and international economic stability were the top ranking issues followed by concerns over federal, state and local taxes. Eighty-two percent of those polled said they were extremely concerned or very concerned about the federal deficit and 80.4% were extremely concerned or very concerned about the federal tax climate. Concerns about state and local tax matters ranked high among 62.3 and 60.4 of attendees. On the eve of the elections in Greece and the potential bailouts of Greece, Spain and Italy, Iowas business and industry leaders also expressed a high level of concern about international economic stability with 72% of those polled saying they were extremely concerned or very concerned. The poll allowed participants to respond to several open-ended questions. Issues on the minds of business leaders include insuring that Iowas workforce has the necessary skill-sets needed for todays jobs and that there is an availability of social and monetary capital for new and innovative businesses in Iowa. Asked about government policies and practices that can affect businesses and industry, 76.5% of respondents told the Iowa Policy Institute that they were extremely concerned or very concerned about partisan divisiveness and 71% were extremely concerned or very concerned about the responsiveness of politicians to the electorate. The poll asked respondents how they would characterize themselves on the political spectrum. Twenty-two percent said they saw themselves as conservative, 22% said they saw themselves as liberal, 20 percent said they were moderate and 37% selfidentified as being independent. Eighty-eight percent said they would definitely vote in the fall elections and 6% said they would very likely vote. More men (57%) participated in the convenience sampling poll than women (43%), and 84% of those polled were from Central Iowa with 10% from Northeast Iowa. The Iowa Policy Institute Poll was conducted with touch screen tablets and by a smart phone link on June 14 and 15 during the 2012 Iowa Association of Business Conference held at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
