INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPEMENT

Sustainable Development is a pattern of growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment, so that these meet can be met not only in the present but also for generation to come. It contains two key concepts within it: the concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts:

Environmental sustainability:- Environmental sustainability is the process of making

sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal-seeking behaviour.

Economic Sustainability:- It calls for using resources so that the business continues to
function over a number of years, while consistently returning a profit. Economic sustainability is the term used to identify various strategies that make it possible to utilize available resources to best advantage.

Socio-political Sustainability:- social-political sphere can be thought of as

representative of the more purely human element in the equation. Social development and social-political sustainability are intimately related concepts but they are not in fact entirely interchangeable. Social-political sustainability too is very much concerned with physical and material standing of people, Social-political sustainability thus seeks pathways to durable social enrichment and development via the vibrancy and health of a societys political processes.

Importance/ Need of Sustainable Development

The main reason people are concerned with sustainable development is because of the fact that the world is a place of finite materials. Sustainable development aims to establish a system of resource consumption that both meets the needs of human life and leaves the environment healthy enough to continue to produce the resources future generations will need. The scope of sustainable development is massive. The following are some of the most important issues to sustainable development:

Fresh Water: This is one of the most essential issues facing the species since humans have
walked on the earth. Of the planet's water, 97.5 percent of it is salt water and of the 2.5 percent that is fresh. All of the humans and animals on the world survive on less the 1 percent of the planet's total water supply. The problem is that the population is increasing the demand for water while the supply is decreasing due to issues like pollution. In order to become more sustainable, humans need to take action.

Finance: One of the main issues of sustainable development is figuring out how to best
distribute the world's wealth. In a free society, disparities are always going to exist, but the problem confronting the future is that these numbers are trending towards the wealthy owning more and more. A truly sustainable society would be interested in increasing all its citizens' access to resources.

Health: Health is very much to sustainable development, in areas where poverty is rampant
and resources are not provided equally to all members of society. Nutritious food is limited in these areas as well as access to adequate medicine and medical health professionals.

Climate change: Nowadays Climate change is a worrying factor for every one or it
should be. Pollution is increasing day by day because of society and business which directly affecting on climate and natural resource is also decreasing, so climate getting threat from different aspects. So here comes the role of sustainable development, we can prevent all the problems by going through a sustainable way.

In FY2010, the group used 29249 MWhs renewable energy. Toshiba Television Central Europe (Poland) reduced CO2 emissions by 1850 tons annually by switching to electricity from hydroelectric power, a form of a renewable energy, and optimizing power system energy. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: From 1995 to 2000, Toshiba Group reduced green house gas emissions to less than one-third of the previous level by energetically taking such measures as the collection and reuse of greenhouse gases other than CO2. Toshiba Group's greenhouse gas emissions have decreased since FY2007. Such emissions in FY2007, the most recent year when they peaked, were 40% lower than those in FY1990. Toshiba Group expects that in FY2012 greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 25%.

In order to minimize collection and recycling costs as it complies with each country's recycling scheme, the Group aims to increase the volume of end-of-life products recycled by 180% compared to the 2001 level by 2012. In Japan, it has established a unique scheme to collect medical equipment, elevators, MFP/POS systems, and other products. Toshiba Group also responds appropriately to the Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Europe and state laws in the United States. In FY2010, in Japan and abroad, Toshiba Group collected about 166,000 tons of end-of-life

products, of which it recycled about 130,000 tons. The Group increased the weight of end-oflife products recycled by 283%, exceeding the goal substantially for FY2010.

water it uses for its business operations. The goal of the Group is to reduce the volume of water received per unit real production by 10% compared to the FY2000 level in FY2012. The amount of water received per unit real production in FY2010 was reduced to 71% of the FY2000 level, a 29% reduction, far exceeding the goal of 9%. Specific measures include reusing water resources by introducing wastewater treatment and collection systems into semiconductor production sites that consume much water and using a dry exhaust gas treatment process.

Greening of Process:
The Greening of Products refers to our initiatives aimed at promoting the development of Environmentally Conscious Products (ECPs). To promote the Greening of Products, we operate in accordance with the following procedures.
