During the time period between 1875 and 1925, the United States witnessed a shift of the population

from rural to urban environments. This is somewhat expected though, due to all the new technological advancements and the rapid industrialization of the urban cities. The most appealing was the job opportunities available, mostly in factories, where the pay was some consistent rather than the farm prices which were declining. Urban life had it own attraction. With all the new immigrants migrating in the mid 1800s, from Eastern and southern Europe, it was easier to fit right into the urban life. These new immigrants stayed together in ghettos, according to where they came from. People who shared the same culture, language and values all lived together in small districts around the city. This one of the reasons city life was so appealing, Germans can go live with other Germans in a certain part of the city and Italians can also do the same. Due to the industrial revolution, new technology provided new opportunities for business, factories were rapidly appearing in many of the urban cities. With all these factories opening the increasing number of job openings appealed to the population in the rural area. Then there was also the rapid expansion of the railroad system, it made travel to the east coast a whole lot faster and easier. The American population faced many issues in the rural areas in which they resided. For example there was the prospect of sharecropping, where most of the people where tenant farmers and owed 50% of what they earned to the owner of the land. After splitting the share with the owner, there wasnt much to live off of. Areas like the Great Plains were not very efficient so they did not have a tremendous amount of job openings, the western American was mostly agriculture based. There was also the issue of falling farm prices, it happened in the mid to late 1800s but also after 1921, when there was a surplus of food and not enough people to buy it. All these factors led to many Americans to make the decision to move to urban environments. To make this trip even more appealing, many Americans heard the stories of Horatio Alger, which was basically a concept of the American Dream. It stated that hard work, perseverance and honesty will lead you to personal success. The harsh life in the rural towns and the prospects of economic success in the urban cities forced many Americans to make to move from rural to urban environments. They moved to achieve a better life not only for themselves but also for their families.
