SUBMERGING THE USER INTO THE HOSTILITY

Responding to the sites natural resources as much as possible to create the connection of the building to the landscape which will translate into a connection between the user and the landscape.

Site Context
scale: 1/16 = 10
INTEGRATE INTEGRATED THERMAL MEMBRANE

ICE IS A GOOD INSULATOR Any type of moisture will freeze use the freezable\thawable ice to act as a skin The wall of water froze in an instant, therefore, with modern day technology it is possible to manipulate a structure out of ice Water\ice can be used as a building material (skin) Waste water can be used to generate the exhaust

EXPLODED D AXONOMETRIC ETRIC OF TYPICAL AL POD

CHANGING TEMPERATURES A space above the ground will provide sunlight and warmth during the day but temperatures will drop severely during the night as a result of wind chill A space below ground will naturally be more insulated when compared to one above ground; temperatures will not uctuate as much as a space above the surface

INSUL ETFE INSULATED PANELS

A CHANGING GROUND PLAIN Because snowdrift contributes to the majority of the ever changing landscape and compaction of the snow into ice, there is not a set ground plain to plant the building on, a space can either stay below the surface or purposefully play with the changing of the ground plain A CHANGING LANDSCAPE - THE DATUM LINE The ice is literally moving in both the horizontal and vertical axis Horizontal movement of the ice will be translated into the transitional spaces between the major forms of the program LIGHT (TWO TYPES: NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL) Natural - sun will be near the low horizon line for a few months out of the year the sun is up for 24 hrs a day for almost three months out of the year It is pitch dark for almost two months out of the year It is a natural, warm color that is free from any pollution It can present a wide color palette of colors when conditions are met It is a blinding white because of the reection ARTIFICIAL Lights will act as a noticeably brilliant beacon shimmering over the landscape during the nights Shining light onto the ice to symbolize

A SET DISTANCE The site is dangerously far away from any real form of civilization Emergencies are serious and rules are set in order to avoid them Communications can be limited as a result from issues with satellite connection Connecting the users with their families is an issue Could be an opportunity to connect them with their social network Transportation to and from the site is limited throughout the year, especially wintering over

EXTRUDED COMPOSITE BASE

SNOWFLAKES The growth of a snowake is controlled by the movement of supersaturated air inside a cloud. Each ake is subjected to different conditions along its trajectory and therefore develops a unique shape. By having water sprayed around the building, it will settle onto the surface and form various thickness of layers of ice crystals to show how the environment is constantly changing and will never be the same SKY Day Can be clear blue or extremely harsh white because of storms and wind Night Can bring amazing views of the night sky that allows for extreme visibility of the aurora australius, sunsets, and the galaxy

HEAT PIPE A ASSEMBLIES

In keeping with the purity of the environment, only one major building material will be used, plastic. Plastic is thought to be one of the most toxic substances to the environment that man has created. It takes a lot of energy to produce and is typically very difcult to break down and decompose when no longer needed.

12

The Antarctic is actually an ideal location to deploy a building which is made from this type of substance.

DURABILITY Since plastic takes a long time to degrade, the harsh environment will have difculty attacking the integrity of the material Wide variety Since plastic is a man made composite, it is possible to create a large collection of various materials that can have different properties and perform for user specic tasks Construction As a result of its molecular compounds, plastics can be: Lightweight (using less fossil fuels to transport) Perfect for transportation across the ocean and across the ice FORMABILITY Because of the unique way plastics are made, any type of extrusion is possible and can be replicated an unlimited amount of times after the form is made
