2.2.5 Flexible Topology Display

It provides the unified topology management to monitor devices on the whole network. It can:
l l

Perform topology auto-discovery and refresh the topology dynamically. Detect the change of network device status (for example, the port status is changed or the communication with the NMS is broken) to change the color of topology node.

Enable you to create a topology view (physical view) composed by your concerned devices. Provide aerial view to display and locate the required topology in a large scale network. Search for a node in the topology and locate a network device in the explorer and topology view as fast as possible. Drag, zoom in, zoom out and select several nodes on the topology.

2.2.6 Perfect System Security

l

Providing flexible policies to allocate rights for users (authenticate users according to object + operation), which is convenient for operator to allocate user right based on the actual management responsibility.

Providing simple and convenient tools for database backup which simplify the administrators task. Providing Watchman components which ensure high-availability of the system. Providing detailed user and task operation logs.

Chapter 3 Networking Application

Chapter 3 Networking Application

3.1.1 Inband Networking
NMS uses the service channel provided by the managed device to manage network devices. In this networking mode, the NMS interactive information is transported through the service channel. It features flexible networking and no additional devices, as shown in Figure 3-1.

Figure 3-1 Inband networking Networking description: Because the managed devices of iManager N2000 DMS are connected to the IP core network, the NMS center only needs to connect with the nearest IP device on the IP core network. You can manage each device in the network by configuring the relevant routes. How the NMS center is connected with the IP core relies on the location of the center with the nearest IP device. If they are in the same room, the LAN can be adopted; otherwise, the DDN or E1 can be adopted which is similar to those in outband networking.

3.1.2 Outband Networking

NMS uses the communication channel provided by the devices (other than the managed devices) to transport NMS information. Compared with inband networking, it provides more reliable device management channel so as to locate and monitor devices on the network on a real-time basis when the managed device fails. It requires additional devices for networking and maintenance channel independent of service. In outband networking, the NMS center connects with the managed devices in several modes. iManager N2000 DMS NMS manages devices through DDN, ISDN leased line, E1 line, Router and Ethernet. The networking is shown in Figure 3-2.

3.1.3 Watchman Networking

Figure 3-3 Watchman networking Generally, the application service is running on Site A (main node). Data replication software copies the updated data on Site A to Site B (standby node). When Site A fails,

Watchman will restart the application service running on it from Site B (Site B turns into main node) to achieve automatically backup from remote. Main node: Refers to the node where the source of data to be copied is located. The application process such as NMS can be started on it. In Figure 3-3, Site A is the main node. Standby node: Refers to the node where the sink of data to be copied is located. The application process such as NMS cannot be started on it. In Figure 3-3, Site B is the standby node.
