FDA considering new standards for birth control drugs "Evidence Doesn't Matter" in APA Abortion Advocacy The Pill Progesterone only, low dose combination pills The Physicians Desk Reference lists the above hormonal contraceptives as having three mechanisms of action: 1) Prevent ovulation, 2) Thicken the cervical mucous to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and fallopian tube, and 3) Alter the lining of the uterus so implantation cannot take place. The third action, if and when it occurs, is abortifacient (meaning a human life has begun but cannot continue to develop without the nourishment provided through the mothers uterine wall). Although pro-life

physicians continue to debate if and how often hormonal contraceptives interfere with the implantation of an embryo, it is important to educate ourselves and our clients about this potential action of the Pill. Those who seek to protect the sanctity of human life from the point of fertilization should be cautious about taking any drug which could end the developing childs life. For further research, download or purchase the helpful booklet Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions? Norplant This implant is placed under the skin of the arm for up to a 5 year period. The progesterone hormones effect is to suppress ovulation, but after 2 years, there is a greater chance of break-through ovulation and fertilization. The hormone may prevent implantation of the embryo. Depo-Provera This Progesterone (hormone) derivative is injected every 3 months to prevent a woman from ovulating, but it also alters the uterine lining. Break-through ovulation and fertilization may occur, though less frequently than with Norplant. The hormone may prevent implantation of the embryo. Morning after pill Large doses of existing birth control pills (or another drug levonorgestrel, known as Plan B) are given up to 72 hours after intercourse to attempt to prevent the implantation of the embryo. A second dose is given 12 hours after the first one. The action of these large doses of hormones birth control pills work to prevent ovulation and/or fertilization. RU-486 When a woman is given RU-486 (also called Mifepristone), it kills her baby by interfering with progesterone, the hormone which keeps the baby implanted in the wall of the mothers uterus. Two days later, the woman returns to the clinic to receive a prostaglandin drug which induces labor and expels the dead embryo (RU-486 is used until 7 weeks after the first day of her last menstrual period). If the baby hasnt been expelled by the time the woman makes her third visit to the doctor, she will require a surgical abortion procedure (5-8% likelihood). Raymond, Klein & Dumble, the pro-abortion authors of RU486 Misconceptions, Myths and Morals, (IWT Pub, 1991) stress that RU-486 is not safe for women and list the following contraindications (reasons a person should not take RU-486): under age 18 or over 35; menstrual irregularities; history of fibroids, abnormal menstrual bleeding or endometriosis cervical incompetence, previous abortion, or abnormal pregnancies; pelvic inflammatory disease; recent use of IUD or the pill 3 months.

Abortion In Romania

Statistically, Romania has the highest abortion rate in the world. Currently 3 out of 4 pregnancies are terminated with abortion. It is difficult to collect accurate numbers since abortions are so readily available throughout the country in both states hospitals and private clinics; only the hospitals report their abortion statistics. In Romania, a country with the population of 23 million, it is estimated that there are about 800,000 abortions a year and this is probably on the conservative side. (At that same rate in the United States, that would be 8.5 million abortions a year!) It's been called the Romanian abortion epidemic. Doctors typically react to the results of a positive pregnancy test by assuming their patients will want an abortion (75% do). Their next comments then are more likely to be about scheduling an abortion rather than about due dates.

Correa uses logic and reasoning in her article that abortion is a political issue that affects the entire world. She states that abortion is a worldwide public health problem. One example is in the time of the Roman Empire. During this time period, the world was having a crisis with depopulation and fertility was looked at as a blessing. Killing an innocent, unborn child would have been unheard of at that time period. Another instance is the European Catholic Inquisition tracked down and even executed those who would abort a child. These women being executed, usually thought as witches, were the mothers and the midwives. The logic of these times would not make abortion a way of life. Abortion was portrayed as wrong for oneself and wrong for the society in which they lived. Many credible sources are used to show how abortion is a political issue that affects the world. The United States Supreme Court in 1973 decided on the constitutionality of abortion. Senator Jesse Helms approved a condition that prohibited activities

that were related to abortion were not permitted to use American funds. During this period of time the Right to Life movement was growing. A group of agents from this movement decided to get their point across to bomb clinics and kill the doctors who performed abortions. Another major controversy was created around abortion during the International Population Conference that was held in Mexico. The U.N. Fund for Population was cut by the United States because the programs assisted access to abortion. The United States Supreme Court and the Right to Life group have credible sources to support their own claim on why abortion is an issue. Values and beliefs are used when discussing abortions political status. Fundamental political behavior is found in patriarchal ideas of religion and its values and beliefs. Thinking that they are preserving culture in religions and the traditions by creating different ways of life from the world wearing down fundamentalist create problems for women. Women do not receive access when fundamentalists block their services such as reproductive health. Preserving more privileges for males, the policy makers accept what is familiar to them. When gains in the geopolitical area or economics are likely, governments will let go of their commitment to woman. Abortion is being permitted in 189 out of 193 countries, and in those countries, a majority uses it to save womens lives. In the countries of Peru, Chile, and Dominican Republic the abortion rates are 20 times what the United States has registered. Unsafe abortions between the years of 1995 and 2000 resulted in 78,000 maternal deaths. Reports show that one in eight maternal deaths is due to complications due to an abortion. This article by Correa, argued that abortion was a political issue that goes on across the world. She examined many different countries that have abortion and how they use it. There are some countries that use abortion only to save the mother. Abortion is some areas is illegal. The way that abortion is to be practiced is decided by the law of the land. Correa used effective arguments to show that abortion is a political issue and is seen across the world. Logic was the most contributive to this argument. She shows that throughout time people have taken a difference stance on abortion. Abortion went from the early periods when no one dared to kill an innocent unborn child, through a period of killing those who were involved to present day. In the present, abortion is mainly a choice for the mother and father of the baby to make. The audience reading this will be impacted. Seeing how abortion has been in the past and seeing the place it has now in our politics. An audience member who is reading this may be influenced. With the facts given in the article and how she has them laid out it is easy to see how she makes her points and supports them. Many reasons are given to explain her point and they are backed up with fact. Correa proves that abortion is a global issue.
