Kozy Kids Summer Day Camp to run June 18-Aug. 10

Kozy Kids Summer Day Campfor ages 5 and 6will be offered at Kosciuszko Community Center, 2201 S. 7th St., June 18Aug. 10 (no camp July 4). Kozy Kids Campwhich has been taking place for 10 yearswill provide a variety of activities for children including learning to play lots of sports, reading, playing in the game room with an ample number of games, signing songs, and making snacks. In addition, there is an arts and crafts program that will involves painting, coloring, and many other hands-on activities. Every week, the kids will go swimming at Pelican Cove outdoor swimming pool, take a trip to the library for storytime, and also go on a field trip to fun and educational places like Discovery World. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided for free every day. Day Camp starts every morning at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Late pick-up until 4 p.m. is available for an additional $5.00 per week per child. Early drop-off is also available by calling (414) 645-8441. The cost for 8-weeks of fun is $80 (childs year membership to the Center is included for free). UW Band returns for Jackson parade

Action in Jackson returns to Jackson Park June 10-12. Music, a parade and a special appearance by the University of Wisconsin Marching Band will be part of this years festivities. Jackson 100 years, then and now will be the theme for this years parade. The following is a list of music and activities at this years event: June 21 Kickoff party featuring Mike Miller and Piles of Rhythm, 7-11 p.m. (free) June 22 Geoff Landon & the Wolfpack, 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. (cover charge) Mozart Cadillac, 7-11 p.m. (free) June 23 Oil Can Harry 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. (cover charge) Nite Trax, 7-11 p.m. (free) June 24 Parade begins at noon; UW Marching Band will perform the fifth quarter in shelter #1; Goodtime Dutchmen, 1:30-5 p.m. p.m. A co-ed sand volleyball tournament will be held June 22-23. Milwaukee School of Language teachers honored by MSOE

Each academic quarter, graduating students from MSOE are invited to nominate an individual from their own secondary school experience or their working experience-someone who not only "knew her/his stuff," but could communicate it, and whose commitment to others included encouragement of further educational and career goals. MSOE is proud to recognize those who have had a significant influence on their students' futures. Not only does MSOE shine a spotlight on its graduates, but also thank those, who in some important way, motivated them, inspired them and helped make it happen for them. Milwaukee School of Languages teachers Todd Everson and Joan Hartung received the VIP Excellence in Teaching Award from MSOE. They were nominated by their former student John Eggert, who graduated with honors from MSOE with bachelor's degrees in architectural engineering and construction management. Eggert said, "Mr. Everson is an incredible educator and has motivated me to pursue a career in architectural engineering. He is an extremely effective educator who gives his students one-on-one, direct instruction and incorporates a variety of teaching strategies to assist his students in understanding the abstract and difficult concepts of physics. Ms. Hartung is a very dedicated, passionate and patient teacher and is always willing to go the extra mile for her students. She has given me the resources and motivation to pursue my goals." MSOE is an independent, non-profit university with about 2,500 students. MSOE offers 18 bachelor's degrees and nine master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, building and infrastructure engineering, health-related engineering, computer, business and nursing fields.

Comfort Keepers remembers client, Holocaust survivor

Jonas Gutman was born in Poland in 1921. He lost his father at a young age to a heart attack, and at the age of 17, he was sent to the first of five concentration camps. At one point, prisoners were divided into two lines; Jonas switched lines so another man could be with his brother. Jonas went back to work while the other line was sent to the gas chamber. Liberated in 1945, Jonas was a mere 97 pounds and spent a year in an Austrian hospital. Jonas returned to Germany to look for his lost family members. There he met the love of his life and future wife, Lutka, who was the only Holocaust survivor in her family. In 1948, the Gutmans were placed in Milwaukee, where they both learned English and would raise two children. After Lutka was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Jonas cared for her for 24 years and was awarded the Caregiver Award by the Visiting Nurse Association. Lutka died in 1994. employees.
