I was recently thinking back on the year that is soon going to pass
(2008). I immediately thought of several significant things that have
occurred in Natomas during this year. I thought I would share a few of
them with you (although not all inclusive). I also attached some news
clips because a picture (or video, or more words) is worth 1,000 words.
I also attached a few pictures from throughout this year.
* The City elected a new mayor and Kevin Johnson was sworn in on December 2, 2008
* A new Police Chief (Rick Braziel) was sworn in on Jan. 9, 2008. He promised to work with the
community and provide more transparency.
* Budget Issues
The city expected to have a $58 Million deficit for this fiscal year. This resulted in closing the
public counter at the Kinney Police Facility, hiring freezes, curtaining overtime and much more.
* Extreme Increase in Home Invasions and street Robberies in North and South Natomas.
We had numerous Home Invasions and street Robberies in the month of June. Several suspects
were arrested over the next couple of months which culminated in the arrest of Sammie Lee
Nichols in November.

* Natomas Community Resource Center (E. Commerce/Del Paso Rd - Safeway Shopping Center)
This was the last goal for the Natomas Community Leaders. It opened in December and is a
resource for community members to have access to City resources. You can file reports, do
research, have community meetings or whatever else you decide at the resource center. Our very
own crime specialist Kurt McCray will have office hours there along with Brit Irby from
Neighborhood Services.

* SWAT Training
The Police SWAT team conducted training in the Creekside Neighborhood. This is the first time
we conducted this sort of training in a neighborhood and invited the community. They needed to
do some realistic training in a furnished house. We conducted the training in one of our
neighbors homes and also invited the community out to see what the SWAT team does - and take
pictures with the SWAT officers of course.

* Crime Stats
Crime statistics have gone down in many categories this year in Natomas. For example, last year
residential burglaries went up 30% in North Natomas even though they decreased city wide by
about 10%. This year residential burglaries went down 18% in North Natomas. Stolen cars are
down by 40 to 55%. The one category that has significantly gone up is Robberies (unspecified) in
N. Natomas. They have gone up by 76%. The decrease in crime is, in large part, due to the
community partnerships and neighborhood activism. We have solved numerous crimes because
of calls from residents about suspicious activity and even on some occasions residents following
suspects. The information sharing in Natomas has also been vital to impacting crime.

* Fort Natomas
Fort Natomas was burnt to the ground for the 3rd time this year. Through great work on the part
of several Natomas Community Leaders - the Fort was rebuilt - This year. We recently had the
grand opening and kids can once again play at Forth Natomas.

* Holiday Experience
On 11/26/08 we delivered food to several deserving families in Natomas. The food was donated by
Kings player Francisco Garcia.
On 12/10/08 the Police Department (Officer Sam Lopez, POP officers Scott Blynn, Corey
Morgan, Sgt. Dave Nasca, Student Trainee Cassie Joannides, CSO Kurt McCray), Community
Leaders and Kings Player Bobby Jackson delivered two large bags of food, a Christmas Tree and
autographed pictures of Bobby Jackson to 5 deserving familie in Natomas. The families were
selected by Mr. Hervey Taylor (Principal at Hight Elementary School), Migdalia Wade (President
of the Natomas Jr. Nighthawks), and Angelique Ashby (President of Creekside Neighborhood
Association). The families were very suprised to see Bobby Jackson and his two daughters in
their homes - but Mr. Taylor was also treated like a "rock star" in these homes. I have also heard
of several other Natomas Community members giving back to the community and providing the
holiday experience to very deserving families!

Conclusion
It has been a great year filled with a lot of Up's and Down's, success and challenges, but most of
all - some great partnerships and community activism. As you can notice from all the above
activities - almost all of them involve working together.
It has absolutely been my pleasure to work together to improve OUR community and
neighborhoods. I truly look forward to the Up's and Down's, challenges and partnerships that
2009 will no doubt bring. But more then that - I look forward to working together - and together
ensuring Natomas is a great place to live!
Have a great New Years and Let's get to It - Here is to Next Year!!!
