Conferencing

Recap: There are 4 steps to conferencing. They are listening, restating, pointing, and teaching. In a nutshell, as teachers our goal is to help students achieve their full potential. When listening we should be taking everything the student wrote in. When restating we should simply restate what the student wrote. When pointing out we should point to specific features of strong and weak writing, and last but not least when teaching, we should pass constructive judgment on the quality of our students work.

Aunt Leisa- Page 230 Cassandra-Student Jamilet-Teacher Cassandra: Reads the story on page 230 called Aunt Leisa. Jamilet (Listen): Jamilet (Restate): I have gathered that you wrote about how your Aunts sprit left her body and that you saw her image in the sky. From that point you connected with her and basically gathered that she will be your guardian angel and that she still is your guardian angel. Cassandra: Yes, that is correct! Jamilet (Point): I was inspired how you used quotations. I was touched by how you described how much you love your aunt and how your aunt is still involved in your life as your guardian angel. You showed voice with how much you loved her and I really was hooked on that.

Jamilet (Teach): I noticed you just wrote one paragraph. A flow map would help you expand your ideas into a more complete writing. The first paragraph could be about your relationship with your aunt. In the second paragraph you could describe how you feel about your aunts death, and in your last paragraph, you could describe how your aunt is your guardian angel and describe how it is to see her in the sky.

What Are the Qualities of a Good Teacher? - Page 230 Cassandra-Teacher Jamilet-Student Jamilet: Reads the story on page 234 called What Are the Qualities of a Good Teacher? Cassandra (Listen): Cassandra (Restate): I have gathered that you wrote about what qualities you believe a good teacher should have. You believe that teachers should be nice, shouldnt yell much, and should find ways to help you. Jamilet: Yes, you got exactly what I was trying to say! Cassandra (Point): Theres not much wrong with your work. I clearly can see that you wrote a very organized story with a thesis, body, and conclusion. However, you continuously ask the reader if you are correct for believing what you believe in. Your work was clearly written and there was just an occasional oops here and there. Cassandra (Teach): The only thing I would suggest you to do is to not second guess yourself. By asking the audience if you are right every other sentence makes it seem like you arent confident in what you are speaking about.
