Question 2: Persuasive essay

Introduction: The goods of science and technology to humans: o o It makes our lives convenient It improves the quality of life

The downsides of science and technology to humans: o it is environmentally hazardous if not properly monitored

Thesis statement: (the controlling idea of the essay) There are several/ three reasons why we do not want the factory to be set-up in our residential area (Taman Bahagia)

Body 1: The first reason is it is a hazard to the environment

It is a hazard to the environment

It causes all kinds of pollution such as thermal pollution, air pollution, noise pollution and water pollution Affect the quality of life because humans depend on water and air (nature) to live long and healthy life. Pollution can kill other living things such as floras and faunas and this will lead to inbalance in the ecological system.

Body 2: It is a hazard to health o The harmful chemicals being released into the air can cause ailments to people especially small children and the elderly; people suffer from asthma and respiratory problems The toxic wastes and refuse from the factory thrown into rivers and streams can seep into the water tables and contaminate the water supply as well killing the fish; It can also cause terminal illnesses such as cancers of all kinds (skin cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, nose cancer)

Body 3: It can cause traffic congestion o Most vehicles used by the factory are big lorries and trailers. They can take up most of the road and this will cause congestion as other vehicles have to compete with these lorries/trucks; Residents will find it difficult to arrive at their destinations in time because they have to give way to vehicles that travel to and fro the factory every day. Besides, these heavy vehicles can cause big potholes and this pose a risk to the residents using the roads.

Body 4: It can cause fatalities

Children like to play by the roadside. They can get run over by a lorry if they are not careful enough. The elderly or cyclists might get knocked down by vehicle if they are not fast enough to avoid the big trucks and lorries. Some out of- control lorry drivers might rammed into peoples homes and put the residents lives in danger, too.
