Kasauli

Kasauli is a small hamlet which was fostered by the British. Holding much of its past splendors, this scenic town boasts of beautiful churches, architectural temples and pedestrian trails. The city revolves around the Mall which has many eateries and a few shops selling various artifacts and souvenirs. An ideal honeymoon destination, couples come here to enjoy the natural vista of the surrounding along with cool and pleasant ambiance. While the town serves as a perfect holiday destination for families and adventure enthusiasts since Kasauli provides excellent trekking and camping options.

Getting There
Air: Nearest airport is at Chandigarh (70 km) and Shimla (75 km). Direct flights are available to Chandigarh from Delhi which are economically priced (Rs 2,000-3,000). Kingfisher also provides direct flights to Shimla from Delhi but the tickets are expensive (Rs 8,000-10,000). Train: Nearest railhead at Kalka (40 km). Direct trains are available from Delhi (Himalayan Queen), Kolkata (Howrah Delhi Kalka Express) and Mumbai (Paschim Express). No direct trains are available from Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Bus: Overnight buses are available from Delhi (281 km, 9 hours, Rs 700 for AC Volvo bus) and Chandigarh (120 km, 4 hours, Rs 500 for AC Volvo bus) for Shimla. There are no direct buses from Shimla, therefore tourists are advised to take a taxi from here, charges Rs 1,000 for a return trip. For tourists travelling from South India (Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai), the best option is to fly to Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla and book a taxi for Kasauli.

When To Go
The weather of Kasauli remains pleasant throughout the year. Summers (March to June) are the ideal time to enjoy family vacations, camping and wildlife as the weather is mild (24C). During the Winters (November to February), temperatures dip to as low as 1C and occasional snowfall occurs, making it a bliss for honeymooners. Monsoons (July to September) should be avoided as the area is prone to land slides.

Eat & Drink


There are quite a few eating options in Kasauli and most of them are located on the Mall Road. The best vegetarian place in Kasauli is Narinder Sweet House in Mall market, famous for its samosas, burgers and sweets. For Chinese, tourists can go to R Maidens on Mall Road. For lip smacking burgers, sandwiches and soups, Daily Bread on Lower Mall is the best place. There are many small dhabas on Mall Road that offer yummy momos and local delicacies at affordable prices.

Shopping
While in Kasauli, there is not much to shop for except a few Tibetan handicrafts and local knick-knacks. The main market is located on the Mall Road. Tourists can go to Pinkonez and Mug Studio, both on Mall Road, for some exclusive souvenirs. Old Bazaar and Tibetan market are the places where tourists can buy woolens and wooden souvenirs.

Travel within city


The main modes of transport in Kasauli are buses and taxis that run from cities like Delhi and Chandigarh. Rented motorcycles are also a preferred mode of transport in Kasauli, along with tongas.

Bus
Buses are available to Kasauli from all major and minor cities in the region. You can take a bus to Kasauli from Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla as local transport is almost nonexistent in Kasauli. Kasauli is also a very small region, so most of the must see destinations can be comfortably covered by walk. Bus charges to travel from the foothills of Kasauli to the top of the hill (where the main temple is located) can range around Rs 20 to 30 per head. The buses available are regular semi deluxe ones.

Tonga
Tongas, or horse drawn carriages, are yet another mode of transport that tourists prefer in the town of Kasauli. Tongas are a cheap mode of transport, and travelling in a Tonga, while not too time effective, can keep the load on your wallet intact.

Rented Motorcycles
Motorcycles and bikes can be rented from the many local rental agencies in the region, and renting out a motorcycle for a day can cost you around Rs 300. You can opt for this mode of travel if you are an adventure buff.

Monkey Point

Bird Watching
Bird watching is one of the most delightful activities tourists can enjoy in Kasauli. Tourists can look forward to see some of the most exotic species of birds in their natural habitat. The lush greenery and forested areas are the apt places to enjoy bird watching. Some of the most common birds that can be sighted here are lack-chinned Babblers, Verditer Flycatchers, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Red-billed Leothrix, Grey Bushchat, nuthatch species, Bar-tailed Treecreeper, Striated Prinias, and Jungle Owlet among other migratory birds. Dagshai, located around 19 km from the main city, is one of the oldest cantonment area developed during the British time and is known for its scenic beauty. Khetarpal Marg
This is an unexplored attraction. Rumors go round that this street has a haunted house. Various stories are associated with its being haunted and dont be surprised to hear scary revelations (after 8 pm the ghost comes alive, the ghost will follow you, etc) from the locals. Though no tourists have yet claimed to see the ghost, this place should certainly be visited for its interesting folklores. The beautiful location of the place amidst the natural scenery is an added attraction.

Krishna Bhavan Mandir


Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the Krishna Bhavan Mandir is a unique temple having the architectural pattern of a church. Built in the year 1926, the temple is a famous pilgrim and visited by thousands of tourists from all over the country and the world. This Hindu shrine is situated in the middle of the town, which makes it easily accessible by taxi or car.

Timber Trail
