ery few breeders can afford the broodmare prospect consistently throw kittens that win blue ribbons. The that has it all a top race record, a strong family, anecdotes of Thoroughbred breeding are full of mares and excellent conformation. Previous studies that compared the produce records fine production record? Random selection of breeding stock obviously is not of top-performing females out of weak families with mares of little racing ability but the way to go for the breeder who from strong families have been has dreams of seeing his or her foals criticized for including in the in the winners circle following a performance group some mares stakes race. Mare Study: Performance vs. Pedigree

(Continued from page 1) class performance prior to the advent of the graded stakes system in 1973 was a subjective task; every effort was made to be conservative.) Because the sires family also contributes to pedigree strength, the average quality of the sires of the two groups of mares was compared using George William Smiths GRASP scores, which are on a scale from 1 to 100. The stronger a pedigree is, the higher the score. Scores are based 25% on a stallions pedigree, 25% on his racing ability, and 50% on his performance as a sire and broodmare sire. [See page nine of the April 16, 2004, issue of The BloodHorse MarketWatch for more detail]. While this score can fluctuate for stallions that are still active as sires or broodmare sires, it becomes increasingly stable as more and more of a stallions progeny drop out of racing and production. For the vast majority of the mares in the study groups, the GRASP values of their sires can be expected to remain within a point or two of their present values. That being said, the performance groups sires had an average GRASP score of 52.80 against a corresponding figure of 63.83 for the pedigree group, leading to the conclusion that the performance group not only came from weaker families but, on average, were sired by poorer stallions as well. Both groups were assumed to have received roughly equal opportunities in terms of the sires they were put to. As producers, the pedigree group did very well compared to the breed averages. Of 1,613 foals produced by this group, 1,200 (74%) made it to the races and 852 (53%) became winners. The stakes winners totaled 115 (7.1%), more than double the percentage for the Thoroughbred population overall, and 46 (2.9%) were graded winners, more than four and a half times the percentage for the baseline group. Finally, the percentage of grade I winners out of these mares was nine times higher than the baseline percentage, with 13 (0.8%). Thus, selection on the basis of pedigree strength and production within the female family appears to have beneficial results, even with mares that were themselves unraced or poor racetrack performers. Nonetheless, the produce records of the performance group were even better a finding that doubtless would have pleased the late Joe Estes, who strongly advocated the selection of broodmare prospects based on racing performance. From 654 foals, the performance group had 497 starters (76%), 362 winners (55%), 55 stakes winners (8.4%), 23 graded-stakes winners (3.5%), and 10 grade-I stakes winners (1.5%). Two hypotheses may help explain why graded-stakes winning mares with relatively indifferent pedigrees as a group outbred their regally-bred but non-winning counterparts. The first is that the performance groups considerable racing ability shows they inherited the vast majority of whatever genetic strengths were available within their pedigrees, whereas the pedigree group may in many cases have demonstrated by their failure to show racing ability that they did not inherit the best of what their pedigrees had to offer. The second hypothesis is that the mares with proven racetrack

Performance Mares, 1970-1984

The charts on pages two through seven feature the individual produce records of 335 mares that were used in Avalyn Hunters analysis. All the mares in this study were born in 1970 through 1984.The peformance group below includes the winners of at least one N. American graded stakes that were not the full or half sisters to any other stakes winner and were out of dams that were not stakes winners or full or half sisters to stakes winners. The pedigree group (page four) includes non-winners that are full or half sisters to grade I winners and had graded-class stakes winners under the second and third dam.The two Siblings groups were drawn from the pedigree group and include the full or half sisters of the pedigree mares. These full and half sisters were successful runners with Standard Start Indexes (SSI) of 4.00 or higher. The SSI is the ratio of a horses earnings per start to the average earnings of all starters of the same sex that were born the same year. The Sibling mares were divided into two subgroups: mares that were graded-stakes winners (page six) and mares that were no better than listed stakes winners (page seven).

performance may also have offered superior conformation, at least from a racing perspective. This hypothesis is, of necessity, entwined with the first as many conformation factors are inheritable and may be the reason that many a well-bred filly shows little or nothing on the track. With this point in mind, it can pay to know something about a mares history when considering a broodmare prospect that either has not raced or has raced very little. A well-made filly who suffered a freak accident either prior to racing or early in her career may well be a different proposition from an equally well-bred animal that broke down while in training. Obviously, pedigree and performance are not an either/or choice, and adding pedigree to racing performance in selecting breeding stock would be expected to yield even better results than either factor alone. To test this hypothesis, I examined the produce records of the dams of the mares in the pedigree group to find full or half sisters of these mares with Standard Start Indexes (SSIs) of 4.00 or better. (An SSI is the ratio of a horses earnings per start divided by the average earnings per start of all runners of the same age and sex; fewer than 5% of Thoroughbreds earn SSIs of 4.00 or better.) Eighty-four such mares foaled in the years 1970-1984 were identified, and to show further the interaction between pedigree and performance, they were divided into two subgroups based on whether they were graded-stakes winners. The first subgroup contained 36 mares that had SSIs above 4.00 but were not graded-stakes winners, running the gamut from good-quality maiden special weight winners to upper-end allowance runners and listed stakes

winners. These mares, that combined above-average ability with excellent pedigrees, produced 337 foals, of which 262 (78%) started, 189 (56%) won, 34 (10%) became stakes winners, 17 (5%) became graded-stakes winners, and 5 (1.5%) became grade I winners. These figures are comparable and in some instances superior to the broodmare performance of the performance group, suggesting that a good-quality winner with a fine pedigree is a desirable broodmare prospect whether or not she has earned black type. As good as these mares were, though, their graded stakes-winning sisters overshadowed them. The 48 mares in this pool of pedigree plus performance represent the elite of their breed in both breeding and performance, and it shows in their produce records. Of the 481 foals they produced, 368 (77%) started, 284 (59%) won, 64 (13.3%) won stakes, 41 (8.5%) won graded stakes, and 11 (2.3%) won grade I events. Based on percentage of foals, these elite broodmares were more than four times better than the average broodmare at producing stakes winners, more than 14 times better at producing graded winners, and more than 23 times better at producing grade I winners. Although the evidence presented here suggests it is best to lean toward performance if a choice must be made between pedigree and demonstrated racing ability, both are obviously important. Further, it is possible that close attention to conformation and temperament especially in those factors known or suspected to be strongly inheritable may help separate the likelier prospects from those best left alone among those mares more distinguished for M their families than for their performances. 2002 through 2004 is $143,220, compared with his 1995-97 yearling average of $38,456. Silver Deputys yearlings also outsell the yearlings by the contemporary sires, whose 2002-04 average is $105,730. With such strong commercial success and a proven record of producing graded stakes winners and champions, even at 20 years old Silver Deputy appears to be something of a bargain at $40,000. His stud fee was as high as $75,000 in 2000 and 2001. Stud fee is more than a function of progeny success and sale success, said Waldman. You also have to consider the number of mares being bred, and the number of seasons available to sell. In Silver Deputys case, a fairly large number of seasons are available through Windfields Farm, the once-powerful Canadian breeding and racing operation that owned Silver Deputy during his abbreviated racing career. Silver Deputy started twice and won twice, with his second start being made in the Swynford Stakes, which he won by three and half lenghts at Woodbine. After the Swynford, a bone chip was discovered in

his right knee. Silver Deputy missed the rest of his juvenile season and still was unable to return to racing in 1988. He retired to stud at Windfields near Oshawa, Ontario, in 1990, and the farm still owns half of the stallion, according to Waldman. Windfields Farm was once Canadas leading breeding and racing organization. The late E.P. Taylor, who founded Windfields, was one of the most influential people in Canadian racing in the second half of the 20th Century. He organized the Ontario Jockey Club, built Woodbine Race Course, bred and raced Northern Dancer, and bred English Triple Crown winner Nijinsky II. His son Charles Taylor took over the farm in 1983 and operated it successfully through the late 1990s. Taylor dispersed the majority of the farms stock in 1996. The dispersal was part of a long-range estate management plan, but during this transition Charles Taylors health was tragically deteriorating after a battle with cancer hed been fighting for more than a decade. He died in 1997. Windfields continues to operate a very small breeding operation of only a few mares, which leaves many seasons to Silver Deputy availM able and creates a lot of opportunity for breeders. W

Silver Deputy Biomechanics

By Frank Mitchell

MOVING FOALS TO THE CENTER

ost biomechanical appraisals of a horse begins with a statement of its strengths followed by an assessment of the traits needed for the horse to be successful. In the case of Silver Deputy, the bay son of Deputy Minister possesses an uncommon number of good qualities that cross well with a wide variety of mares. Based on a biomechanical profile done by the DataTrack International consulting firm, Silver Deputy falls just shy of being a Type I stallion, which includes sires that are an outstanding match with virtually every type of mare. Type I stallions, such as Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, possess the ideal balance of stride, power, and weight. What puts the 20-year-old Silver Deputy so near the center of the breed is his extraordinary balance of stride and power. Being ever so light in weight is the only factor that makes Silver Deputy fall into the Type II category instead of Type I. While weight is not considered a factor that makes horses faster, effective biomechanics requires the weight of muscle and a moderate amount of fat to produce the energy that allows them to move quickly and maintain their speed over a distance. The racehorse also must be able to use its energy efficiently through a good combination of stride and power, which are the mechanical components that make a horse athletically gifted. In Silver Deputy, stride and power are perfectly balanced.

A stallion that blends well with a mare is a sire that produces foals with a balance of power, stride, and weight even though the mares hes bred to may have shorter or longer strides than his own or have greater or less power. Because Silver Deputy possesses this quality, if he were mated to a robust mare with a choppy, pounding stride that couldnt withstand much training because of her weight and poor action, the resulting foal is to have a longer and smoother stride, be of relatively lighter weight, and so be able to better maintain power. These improvements give the foal a better chance of racing effectively. Silver Deputy proved early in his stud career that he had the ability to bring out the best in his mares. During his first season at Windfields Farm in Ontario, where he stood for $2,500 (Canadian), Silver Deputy was booked to a group of modestly successful mares with a collective Comparable Index (CI) of 1.53. The CI indicates how good a mare is as a producer, with 1.00 being the average. One of those mares was Lady dArbanville, who had won just over $8,000 as a racehorse and whose best runner out of eight foals at the time she was first bred to Silver Deputy had been the winner of nearly $22,000. What the cross with Silver Deputy produced was Deputy Jane West, who was Canadas champion juvenile filly in 1992 and M champion 3-year-old filly the next year. W

Aqueduct, in Jamaica, N.Y., and Santa Anita Park, in Southern California lead the country by average and median purse per race, average purse for maiden special weights, and are among the top four tracks with the fewest numbers of runners, on average, per race. Santa Anita is the overall leader with a $51,274 average purse per race, representing a 17.4% increase from last year. The median purse, however, is down a substantial 16.8%, dropping to $42,960 from $51,664 a year ago. The track posted a slight gain for the average purse of its maiden special weights, with $47,160 versus last years $47,000.The higher average purses havent led to larger fields of runners though, as Santa Anita ranks fourth by lowest average numbers of starters per race (7.76) of the eight tracks considered in this study. Aqueduct is a close second by median to Santa Anita with $41,000 per race. The Queens borough racetrack had the same median last year, but did see a slight increase in average purse per race, up to $38,732 from last years $38,691. Aqueducts average maiden special weight purse increased from $41,000 a year ago to $41,621 this year. Gulfstream Park had increases in average purse per race this year, however, it did see a fairly substantial decline in median purse per race compared to a year ago. Last year, the Hallandale, Fla. racetrack was ranked fourth by average purse, with about $21,000. This year, the average per race purse jumped to $29,860.The track still ranks third by average maiden special weight purse per race ($31,000) and median purse per race, although the latter has fallen 44% from last years $30,505 to $17,000 this year.
