ELECTROMAGNETIC PROTECTION FOR AIRCRAFT

INTRODUCTION:

This Aircraft Electromagnetic protection presentation deals with electromagnetic compatibility in an aircraft and protection against static discharge from the aircraft structure by using composite materials. The electromagnetic protection is designed to build a margin between a defined environment and the susceptibility level of the electrical or electronics equipment or system.
SUMMARY:

The electromagnetic protection discipline includes study and characterization of aircraft avionics and systems responses to external electromagnetic (EM) fields caused by radars, radio and television transmitters, and other transmitters. It considers interference to aircraft systems due to other systems installed on an aircraft. This discipline assesses the effects and risks of lightning strikes to aircraft and precipitation static, and evaluates designs to assure safe operation of aircraft in an electromagnetic environment. Also, this discipline is responsible for assessing effects on aircraft systems caused by electromagnetic radiation from portable electronic devices (e.g., wireless network and mobile phones) carried on board an aircraft.

The composites are used in EMI protection for strength and stiffness combined with lightness. By choosing an appropriate combination of reinforcement and matrix material, manufacturers can produce properties that exactly fit the requirements for a particular structure for a particular purpose. Several Pilots experienced Electromagnetic Interference

(EMI) while using VHF radios. Symptoms included incorrect attitude indication while keying the microphone during transmissions to ATC. Most EMI suppression systems rely on a very low resistance path to ground to get rid of the unwanted EMI signals. It is difficult to achieve very low ground return resistance with long lightweight cables and composite airframe construction. Finding solutions that work in metal and composite construction aircraft has involved several changes in the EMI protection.
Objectives are to view structure, equipment and wiring location, material properties, circuit susceptibilities, and environment as seen from the electromagnetic compatibility design perspective of balanced circuits, filters, electrical bonding, grounding, and shielding. It will be important to understand the electromagnetic interference types and the electromagnetic interference paths, the EMI types are set forth in this presentation by showing a profile of the magnetic and electric fields from power lines.
