Now that the weather is warming up, little black ants are on the move. I found out that they love peanut butter. I took about two tablespoons, added about a half teaspoon of sugar, hoping to make it even more attractive, and about a half teaspoon of borax from the laundry aisle. I mixed this with a spoon and put a little dab on some milk bottle lids and placed them where the ants were. In less than two days, I did not see another ant. I phoned the poison hot line and found that borax is not dangerous for children or pets unless chronically exposed. However, if I had either, I would have put the mixture into the bottom of a soup can, and set it on its side to keep the kids or critters out of it. Sharon

WELLSVILLE LIONS CLUB NAMED JONES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR Wellsville (June 18, 2012) - The Wellsville Lions Club has been named the Jones Memorial Hospital Associate of the Year in appreciation and recognition of all the group has done for the hospital and for the Wellsville community. We are delighted that the Wellsville Lions Club has accepted this honor, said Eva Benedict, CEO at Jones Memorial. This group of individuals has proven time and again how much good can be accomplished by people working together. In addition to founding the Wellsville Lions Club Diabetes Center at Jones Memorial Hospital and donating funds for eye care equipment, the Lions helped celebrate the hospitals 90th anniversary last year by erecting a historical marker in the hospitals front lawn. The group will be honored at this years 1921 Associates Garden Reception, held on Sunday, August 5 at the hospital. The 1921 Associates are those who have given $250 or more in the previous 12 months, explained Judy Burt, Community Relations Director at JMH. JMH AWARDED $1 MILLION GRANT Wellsville, NY (June 19, 2012)- Jones Memorial Hospital will receive a grant of $1,067,258 through the Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers (HEAL NY) program. The HEAL NY grants are awarded to help hospitals and nursing homes improve primary and community-based care, eliminate excess bed capacity and reduce over-reliance on inpatient care. Jones Memorial, which recently announced a formal Collaborating Institution Agreement with the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), will use the funds to strengthen and facilitate that agreement, which should be finalized in the next few months. These funds will be used to strengthen our cardiac outpatient diagnostic services, our telemedicine equipment, consulting and legal fee support and a variety of other projects to facilitate the partnership with University of Rochester Medical Center, explained Eva Benedict CEO at Jones Memorial. Through this agreement, the two health systems will work more closely together to identify and meet overall community healthcare needs. It represents an extension of the alliance we have long enjoyed in cardiology, added Mrs. Benedict. For the last 12 years, URMCs department of Cardiology has operated a practice in Wellsville, providing local office visits and diagnostic services, even helping to manage the care of patients who are admitted to JMH. The result of this formal agreement is better access to other types of specialty care, and smoother transfers and referrals as patients move between the two hospital systems. This is a huge step forward for JMH. It will really assist us as we move forward with our partnership, Mrs. Benedict added. Reminiscent of the Pippi Longstocking caper where the unconventional Pippi and her best friends Tommy and Annika fastened scrub brushes to the bottom of their feet and breezed through mounting soap suds on the kitchen floor, singing Scrubbing day, is a holiday! Cy and his friends have discovered that cleaning floors can be playful in their homes, too. Inexpensive hand towels are wrapped under and over their feet and fastened together at the ankles with a thick rubber band. When the music blasts through the speakers in the family room, on cue they grab decorated plastic water bottles filled with a vinegar/water cleaning solution (one part white vinegar to three parts water) and begin their squirt ... and slide routine to clean and shine the hardwood floors. Keeping a home clean and organized can be lighthearted and fun, says Cys dad, Tim Gleason, father of three and owner of a neighborhood car-repair shop. Even friends like to join in from time to time. When kids perform their version of adult tasks, responsibility triumphs. He coined a term -- Team Gleason -- to encourage his young children to work together as a family team when getting everyday jobs done. Done might not be the same standard I might set for myself, but who
cares if there are a few streaks here or leftover spots there, he concedes. When doing summer chores, its really about being together, learning something new and connecting on common ground. To motivate your kids to get into chores this summer, give them a fun tool, and theyll be set. Here are some right tools for the right kid job: --99-cent plastic spray bottle. Craigslist is an excellent source of used items, but did you know you can also find a pet that way? Instead of getting a new puppy, I opted to get a young dog whose owners were moving out of town. My two-year-old pet was already trained, housebroken, vaccinated and spayed. I made sure she was not a victim of a puppy mill and that she did not have any problems. She was just a really good dog who needed a new home. Her former owners also included all her items like her food, dishes, leash, rawhide bones, etc. That saved me a lot of money, and it saved a very pretty and sweet little dog from going to the pound and facing a very uncertain future because of her age. How many people would give anything for this one day of pain in their ears just to be able to hear the sounds that are going on outside? He says his pity party ended with that humbling thought.
