CONFLICT RESOLUTION, ONE WAY OF COPING STRESS AND OF HAVING HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIP

No one here on Earth did not experience conflict in his/her entire life. It is part of our everyday life. We bumped into it with friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and family. It may be in disagreement, interest, points of view, or time. Some perceived conflict not as a mere disagreement but a situation of threat. Conflict appears thru its sources like unresolved crisis in the family relationship, financial constraints, and community issues. Unmet needs for power or attention cause conflict because of inability of somebody to meet needs in healthy and in constructive way. Perceived inability to succeed that includes frustration, despair and boredom are conflicts not only within a person but in relationships. Unmeet needs for physical, emotional or academic safety cause a person to be inferior and lack of self esteem. These are the facts of life which we cannot deny for it applies in our day to day life. What we need to do is to learn on how to cope up with and turn into positive out look in life. We should not avoid conflict but face it for it is part of our ordeals while still living. What we must do is to set boundaries for us to take care ourselves in our relationships with people we met and try to accommodate the needs or desire of others. By setting boundaries, we encourage cooperation and mutual respect without depending on fear, dispowerment or manipulation, and most of all, support emotional safety in a relationship which is founded in love, acceptance and respect for all the people we met and worked with. Since conflict is unavoidable complex set of issues to look into, it is not surprising that satisfactory resolution of it can prove so challenging and time consuming to address. But there is range of method for alleviating or eliminating sources of conflict. What we have to do is to understand factors affecting our perceptions such as culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, knowledge about the situation, our impression towards the messenger, and our previous experiences that influenced much on our insights,

ideas and thoughts-our cognitive response; our emotional response-fear, anger, despair and confusion; and physical response or natural reaction of our body to outside and inner stimuli-conflict. By conflict resolution thru negotiation between parties to settle disputes with the mediation of neutral party, diplomacy is the most effective method to resolve the problem. Of course, proper way of communication is needed to have mutual understanding between parties. Harmonious relationship will be attained by coping our stress thru resolutions.

BRIEFING TECHNIQUES, ITS RELEVANCE IN MY CAREER AS FIRE SERVICE OFFICER

In every organization, presentation of clear, concise, objective and accurate information, program or plans is very important. Having an organized briefing coupled with prepared briefer or presenter, will surely give an understandable information or decision if there are problems involved. The success of any program, activity, and operation plan depends most on a good briefing technique use, and by the ability of the briefer to present. In the fire service, specifically in my career as Fire Office where most of the time is tasked to report and conduct briefing to both superior and subordinate, and other LGU officials, it is important and beneficial for me to learn briefing techniques so that the task given as presenter will become effective and understandable one. As SSupt Alfonso L Javier unfolded the topic-Briefing Techniques, Ive learned that it is an effective means of presenting information, and should be based on the purpose, the desired response, and by the role of the briefer, at the same time, types of briefing should be considered whether is Information briefing-presenting facts and purpose; decision briefing-intended to obtain answer, decision or approval; missionwhich provides information to give instructions, or to instill an appreciation of a mission; and staff briefing to give an update, or intended to secure coordinated or unified effort. The briefer should also learn how to analyze the situation as to whom the briefing is intended for, considering the audience knowledge to the subject, and the briefers expectations. After these, construct the briefing with the aid of collected materials, knowledge to the subject, key points and its logical arrangement, and its validity. The clearness of presentation should be considered also by having proper choice of words, and of preparation of visual aids. Rehearsal before a knowledgeable person who can critique the briefing is also important.

A good preparation is the key to a successful delivery of the briefing. Now I know thru the subject important tips on how to deliver the briefing as natural as I can. Ive learned that Ill be confident if I really study and have full knowledge of the subject, so that I can bring the words in correct pronunciation. Being relaxed will help a lot so that gesture and movements become natural and avoiding distracting mannerisms. Most of all, the effectiveness of briefing is if it is concise, objective, and accurate, and the briefer is prepared. Learning process in this particular subject will not stop in the classroom but by glancing from time to time to the lecture of Sir Javier, and by constant practice coupled with good and diligent preparation of briefing manuscript.
