Rukopis 126 Study of surface plasmon chirality induced by Archimedes' spiral grooves. Ohno T, Miyanishi S.

Abstract A chirality of surface plasmons excited on a silver film with Archimedes' spiral grooves during incidence of a circularly polarized light is analytically and numerically studied by using the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) modeling method. We found that the surface of a plasmon has selective chirality, which is given by the sum of the chiralities of the incident light and the spiral structure. The surface plasmons with the chirality lead to zero-order, first-order, and high-order evanescent Bessel beams with electric charge distributions on the film. This selectivity could be widely applied for chiral detection of the incident light and chiral excitation of several optical modes in 1 nanophotonics. Pasta tastes like pasta with or without a spiral. But when you jump to the nanoscale, everything changes: carbon nanotubes and nanofibers that look like nanoscale spiral pasta have completely different electronic properties than their non-spiraling cousins. Engineers at UC San Diego, and Clemson University are studying these differences in the hopes of creating new kinds of components for nanoscale electronics. In August 2005, Bandaru made headlines around the world when his work on Y-shaped nanotubes appeared in the journal Nature Materials. Bandaru and colleagues at UCSD's Jacobs School and Clemson University demonstrated that Y-shaped nanotubes can behave as electronic switches similar to conventional transistors, which are the workhorses of modern microprocessors, digital memory, and application-specific integrated circuits. Nanotubes, of course, are not the only tiny spiraling structures. DNA and proteins also have helical structures. "It's gratifying to encounter connections at the nanoscale between biological structures and helices and coils synthesized via chemical vapor deposition," said Bandaru. "Our future work might 4 improve our understanding of why helices abound in nature."

HETEROGENEOUS SOLIDIFICATION OF ALUMINUM ON BORON-NITRIDE NANOTUBE Al atoms form incredible hierarchical nanostructure when growing on the heterogeneous surface of the BNNT. The structures of so-formed Al cylinders show strict structural matching and strong structural relevance with BNNTs. Heterogeneous solidification occurred on BNNTs follows a spiral nucleating mechanism. Rheological and Physiological Consequences of Conversion of the Maternal Spiral Arteries for Uteroplacental Blood Flow during Human Pregnancy. Physiological conversion of the maternal spiral arteries is key to a successful human pregnancy. It involves loss of smooth muscle and the elastic lamina from the vessel wall as far as the inner third of the myometrium, and is associated with a 510-fold dilation at the vessel mouth. Failure of conversion accompanies common complications of pregnancy, such as early-onset preeclampsia and fetal growth 8 restriction.

In the non-pregnant state the walls of the spiral and radial arteries contain large quantities of smooth muscle equipped with a rich autonomic innervation. For any growth or nucleation to occur, there must be some supersaturation. Supersaturation is defined as the presence of more solute in solution than would exist at equilibrium. The condition of equilibrium is called the solubility of a particular solute and an example is shown in Figure l Three distinct regions exist in the solubility diagram:

l. Stable Zone (undersaturated including solubility curve)where no nucleation or growth occurs 2. Metastable Zone (supersaturated) where growth may occur but nucleation does not 3. Labile Zone (supersaturated) where both nucleation and growth occur, boundary with metastable zone is not well defined. Here no surface nucleation occurs and only movement of the spiral by addition to the steps is 9 allowed.

Summary 1. Introduction of level set formulation for spirals. (Basically, level set method or phase field model are mathematical formulation for motion of interfaces.) 2. Introduction of growth rate in numerical simulation. 3. Numerical simulation of the growth by an opposite pair. 1. One can find the existence of inactive pairs, and critical distance giving an maximum growth rate, which is faster than the growth by single spiral. 2. Critical distance is close to 4c BCF pointed out that is 3c This article deals with a numerical simulation of the spiral growth using a phase-eld formulation of the Burton-Cabrera-Frank model. The numerical scheme developed for the simulation is based on a nite difference. Single screw dislocation

Multiple length scale growth spirals on metamorphic graphite {001} surfaces studied 12 by atomic force microscopy Perhaps the closest analogy is a spiral-sliced ham. In pure screw dislocations, the Burgers vector is parallel to the line direction. Screw distinctive spiral features - thus revealing an dislocations appear as important mechanism of crystal growth: where there is a surface step, atoms can more easily add to the crystal, and the surface step associated with a screw dislocation is never 13 destroyed no matter how many atoms are added to it.

A screw dislocation is a permanent step for the attachment of sodium and chlorine ions. This spiral growth explains the preferential growth direction of the cubic salt crystal. The single crystals can develop uninterrupted in the salt solution and therefore the typical flat surfaces of crystals are formed. 21 The distance between the two screw dislocations, Magnetic imaging of spiral terraces!
