Issue of Retention of Staff in Academics and Educational Institutes

We all Know that the Good Teachers, Lecturers, Readers and Professors in the Schools, Colleges and Universities, Certainly makes a huge difference in shaping the careers of the new generation in India, A Knowledgeable and Confident individual who is well educated can directly contribute to the better development of nation as a whole, after being well aware of this fact why havent we achieved high quality teaching staff in every Indian class room?

Shortage of Teaching Staff specially the good ones, may be the probable answer to the above question, now why this is happening? This is only due to high turnover and attrition rate in the field pertaining to the academics. The real challenge over here lies not in, In-flow of the good academicians but in the Out-flows. Means, people leaving the jobs as academicians are outnumbering the people who are joining as the academicians in various schools and Colleges. The fact is alarming and unsustainable numbers of quality teaching staff are leaving teaching during their first few years of teaching. We need to balance our efforts to prepare high quality academicians with strong strategies to support good teaching in our schools, colleges and universities. For this First Step we need to take is the Retention of the Teaching Staff at Various Level in all Educational Institutes. To Start with we must first know the reason of dissatisfaction among the, Present academicians the issues Like:Difficulty in Managing Student and Adjusting to the work condition Lack of Monetary Compensation Inadequate Support from the Administration Weak Induction and Mentoring Programme. Are most likely problem presently faced by most of the academicians all over the country.If these Issues are handled well there are chances that we can retain the best academic staff in our schools and colleges.

Difficulty in Managing Students and Adjusting to the work Condition Work conditions, which comprises of professional teaching conditions, and managing students, play a substantial Decisions to leave the profession of teaching altogether. A National Survey conducted States that, The Proportion of the Academicians who report that they plan to remain in teaching as long as they are able to strongly adjust themselves to the working condition of the college or school; also they can effectively manage the students in the Educational Institutes. There is a large Difference in working with the premier educational institutes and the less renowned institutes, because while working with premier institutes the efforts from the faculties is quite less to make the students learn, as students themselves are well versed with the subjects, and the faculty has to play a minimal role in educating the students. So comparatively there is less number of faculties who are leaving up their job in premier institutes as compared to the B Grade and C Grade institutes The management of Student is easy, where small number of students are there in class room. The Work load on the faculty thereby by is low so here the faculty is more likely to continue with the job. The issues like poor administrative support, lack of availability of proper facility, improper geographical area of the educational institute, large sizes of the class are the probable reasons why the academicians leave the jobs in the field of education. So it is very much desirable to address these issues to retain the best teaching staff in educational institutes. Lack of Monetary Compensation It is well known fact the Salaries or Compensation in the field of education is very low to its counterparts in the industry, it is well known fact that to retain the best academicians it is better give them the satisfactory salaries, or otherwise they will constantly thrive to switch over there job to the better paid one in the industry, because academicians think that opportunity cost of becoming a teacher is quite high. The Lecturers in the high demand fields like Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, and Science/ Engineering and Management are specially vulnerable to the salary differences in their decisions to remain in teaching. especially high opportunity costs to remaining in teaching as in alternative occupations the salaries are quite high. Thus it is necessary to give high salary to the experienced faculties in the educational institutes to retain them.

Inadequate Support from the Administration Supporting Academicians in their research work, if there are doing so motivating them to attend various conferences and seminar which will groom the faculties to perform even better are some of the recent initiatives taken to retain the people in the field of academics. Apart from reducing the work load on faculties they should try to make more interaction between faculties and industries, so that academicians can enrich their knowledge pertaining to their respective subject. It will be mutually beneficial for both the student and the faculty. Giving Support to the teaching staff not only boosts their morale but also, it is the main motivating factor which helps administration to see that their best teaching staff continues working with them for long time. Weak Induction and Mentoring Programme. It has been seen that the beginning Lecturers who have access to intensive mentoring by expert colleagues are much less likely to leave teaching in the early years. In Field of Education and Learning the first four-five years are very crucial for the new entrant if, the individual is prepared thoroughly in these years he is probably going to continue in the same field for year togather.Effective Teacher induction programs pair new teachers with experienced mentor who provides support and assistance to help novices navigate the difficult early years of teaching as they perfect their teaching skills. Well designed induction programs have proven their value in reducing attrition rates among new lecturers and Teachers. Mentoring and Strong Induction Strategies have certainly improved retention of teaching staff and enhanced teaching quality which in turn has helped students to improve their performances in the academic examinations also.

Conclusion It is Vitally Important to understand a Knowledge-based economy can only take place if the new expectations of effective teaching is been satisfied.To help Diverse Learners of Today Todays Academicians must go far beyond dispensing subject information, giving test, and assigning grades. To help each individual to prepare for successful employment and to become productive citizen of the nation in the 21 st century, are the present needs felt, for this experienced and knowledgeable faculties are must for the educational institutes all over the country, so It is very important to Retain the Academicians in present scenario.
