TEXT: SENDING GOODS ABROAD The Government often talks about the need to increase exports to help our

economy, but really with the number of rules and regulations there are, especially now were in the EEC, it sometimes seems that theyre actually trying to stop us sending our goods abroad! Of course its not only our government that makes life difficult; its often the government of the importing country who causes problems for the poor British exporter, especially in Eastern Europe where we have a lot of business. The documents are probably the most complicated aspect. For all countries you have to prepare shipping documents, and you always need an insurance policy to cover the risks of transporting the goods. To export to Eastern Europe you have to apply for an import licence, but you dont need one for EEC countries. The weight of the goods must be given in metric measurements, in other words kilogrammes or metric tonnes, if youre sending something to an EEC country, but you can use Brithish or metric measures for deliveries to Eastern Europe. English is an official language of the EEC, so you dont have to translate documents intended for those countries. Unfortunately Eastern European countries require a translation into the local language. Of course you have to inform the British customs authorities of all export shipments, but you only have to notify the Board of Trade in the case of consignments to Eastern Europe. ICOMPREHENSION
