Y7 Documentary- The 5 Film Roles

Script-Writer/Director Later on in school, these two roles are assessed separately but for now, consider this the same role. Essentially, the film is likely to be your idea. Even if its not, you need to visualise it in script form from the very start so that on set, when filming, you are able to explain what you want and make sure that each shot tells a story when collected together in the final cut. You need to work with the cinematographer, oversee post-production editing and soundultimately you have the last say in a dispute. First, you need a short treatment, which is an explanation of what you intend to do: Treatment In our documentary, we intend to gather lots of short comments from several different Y7 students. (Vox-pop style) This will form the first 15-20 seconds and shows lots of different viewpoints on the things that were useful or interesting from the induction and the stuff students think could have been improved. We will then cut to an interview with a member of the inter-disciplinary team who can provide a quick (10-15secs) summary of what the induction was supposed to achieve. Depending on what they say, we will use some cut-in footage, which matches with this content. E.g. A Y7 student learning to navigate around their new Mac. We then intend to provide a quick montage (lots of short clips) outlining some of the highpoints associated with the last month of learning. (We will have to reconstruct this, as obviously we dont have any footage from the events) This will be accompanied by an original musical score and is designed to showcase the most fun, best bits. (We may use of a- student-Voice of God here) The final shot will be of students stood in their old primary school uniforms (different schools represented) in front of the SIS signmaybe the one outside the hall. (Check lighting) We will use a fade transition as the students are now stood in their SIS uniforms and look directly at the camera (direct mode of address) with big thumbs up! Script Your script should be written in a documentary format, using two columns and will be essential for both cinematographer and director. You may well want to collaborate on it. Student 3: We were given our new laptops and shown the basics of how to use them. (No music)

As director, planning and preparation are so important! If you can, take the team to the locations you intend to film. (This is known as a reccea reconnaissance) Check for sound, lighting etc. Encourage your cinematographer to take some still photos so that they are already thinking about framing, lighting, reflections etc. Conduct a rehearsal so that you work as a team and remember that the following process is used on set: 1. Quiet on set 2. Camera ready? 3. Sound ready? 4. Subject/talent ready? 5. Action 6. Cut 7. How was that for sound? 8. How was that for camera? 9. How was that for talent/subject?
