Virtualization Means Server Virtualization?

Forrester Research, Feb 7 2007, 10

Server virtualization has quickly surpassed other forms of infrastructure virtualization, including techniques for virtualizing storage and networks. Globally, 75% of 1,221 enterprises surveyed by Forrester say they are aware of server virtualization technologies, 26% have implemented it, and 8% more will pilot it by the summer of 2007. The rapid adoption of server virtualization can be attributed to its near- and longterm advantages, which allow firms to reduce costs while making their infrastructures more flexible over time. Unlike compute grid technologies, which require architectural changes, server virtualization allows firms to easily encapsulate existing applications into containers that can be moved between physical servers. Forrester believes that this basic capability will prime firms data centers for more advanced Organic IT technologies, including automated configuration and distributed workload management.

Server Virtualization Hardware Partitions

Description
Physical Server divided into fractions. Partitions made of whole modules can achieve electrical isolation.

Benefits
Electrical isolation Independent power on/off Movable boundaries Pure physical performance capabilities

Issues
Usually few partitions OS for each partition Limited dynamic boundary change

App OS

Hypervisor Server

App OS

Description
Hypervisor provides virtual server per OS Virtual servers are isolated but can share HW resources

Benefits
Fine granularity Heterogeneous OS types and releases Strong isolation Dynamic boundary change Some solutions provide online relocation of VMs

Issues
Overhead for Hypervisor Overhead for n*OS (+ Hosting OS)

Examples: IBM LPAR, VMware ESX,

Server Virtualization Virtual OS

Description
Virtual environments share a single partitioned OS
App

Benefits
Fine granularity High efficiency through single shared OS Few OS kernels and few servers Dynamic boundary change Low performance overhead

Issues
All applications must support the same OS release. OS patches / maintenance affect all applications. Isolation of user spaces only, not kernel level.

App

OS Server

Examples: Solaris Zones, AIX WPARs,

Each Virtual environment runs as an independent application and has unique name, IP address, and storage resources

SAP 2008 / Page 9

Server Virtualization Virtual Application

Description
Application is decoupled from the underlying OS.
App

Benefits
No additional virtualization technology required. Just one OS per physical server. No performance overhead.

Issues
All applications must support the same OS release. OS patches / maintenance affect all applications. No isolation

App

Virtual Hostnames OS Server

Virtualized Applications share one OS. Virtualization realized with virtual hostnames.

Examples: SAP Systems in High Availability and Adaptive Computing environments.
