Mounting Instructions for

Surface Boxes with Male Thread (Water, Gas, Waste Water) Order No. 187 for Valves / Order No. 207 for Gate Valves / Order No. 208 for Hydrants

1. Intended use and product description The height-adjustable surface box with male thread is suitable for installation in bituminized roads up to a load class of D 400. At present, there are three sizes of the surface box available: for gate valves (Order No. 207, following DIN 4056), for valves (Order No. 187, following DIN 4057) as well as for hydrants (Order No. 208). The first two versions are designed for drinking water and gas supply. We also offer suitable base plates for the surface boxes (Order No. 204) as well as turning tools (Order No. 597). The base plates serve the purpose of centring the extension spindle exactly in the middle of the surface boxes and of safely holding the Hawle telescopic extension spindle by locking it in the surface box so that it is not pressed downward. The tubular part of the base plate prevents any breaking away of the road base course and any later turning back of the box once it has been turned up. The turning tools are necessary aids for adapting the surface box to the desired height.

2. Installation Installation of surface box: Put the base plate onto the base course of the road with the tubular side pointing upward. Choose the height such that the upper edge of the surface box is approximately level with the upper edge of the coarse topping (see also figure above). Push the extension spindle through the hole in the middle of the surface box and centre it. Telescopic extension spindles are "locked" in the recesses by turning them by 90, thus preventing that they are pressed downward inadvertently. Put the surface box into the base plate. Then backfill the area round the surface box with base course material and coarse bitumen. Now the top side of the surface box should be approximately level with the coarse topping.

Height adjustment of surface box: The surface box must be adjusted in height when the fine topping is applied. To this end the surface box is brought to final road level before the fine topping is applied. The extension spindle must be protected from thermal damage, for example by putting a damp rag into the surface box. Heat the surface box for approx. 5 to 10 minutes by means of a gas flame to soften the bitumen around the surface. Insert the turning tool and turn the surface box by means of an operating key (with an extension tube pushed in). For breaking loose it may be necessary to change the sense of rotation several times. The surface box is lowered by turning it clockwise, and lifted by turning it counterclockwise. After aligning the surface box to road level the bitumen coating of the surface box and the road topping can be repaired by means of gap filling tape or bitumen varnish.
