he Board of Directors of Scania has appointed Martin Lundstedt new President and Chief Executive Officer of Scania AB. Lundstedt will take up his new position as of September this year. Lundstedt succeeds Leif stling, who has been appointed member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. Changes will also be made in Scanias Executive Board on the same date. Lundstedt joined the company in 1992 and has held various senior positions including head of Scanias industrial operations in
France from 2001 to 2005 and Senior Vice President, Trucks, until 2007, when he assumed his current position. Lundstedts move has caused a domino effect at the top. In addition to its new CEO, Jan Ytterberg, Chief Financial Officer, and Christian Levin, Head of Sales and Services Management, remain in their current positions. Per Hallberg, currently Head of Research and Development, Purchasing, has been appointed Head of Production and Logistics. In his new position, he succeeds Anders Nielsen, who has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of MAN Truck
& Bus AG. New member of the Executive Board and Head of Research & Development, succeeding Per Hallberg, will be Dr. Harald Ludanek. Henrik Henriksson, has been appointed new member of the Executive Board and Head of Franchise and Factory Sales, succeeding Lundstedt. In Scanias other Executive Board moves, Andrea Fuder, has been appointed Head of Purchasing, while Kent Conradson has been appointed Head of Human Resources.
rucking businesses should review their costs and freight rates ahead of the introduction of the carbon tax and the 2.4 cents per litre increase in their fuel tax on 1 July 2012, according to the Chief Executive of the Australian Trucking Association, Stuart St Clair. Although trucking businesses will not pay carbon tax on the fuel they use on public roads until 1 July 2014, they will still face increased costs from 1 July 2012 as their suppliers increase their prices, he said. Like every other business, trucking businesses should review their costs and make a judgement about whether they are likely to increase as a result of the carbon tax. With just one month to go before the introduction of the tax, its time for every trucking
business to talk to their accountant or go over their books, Mr St Clair said. The tax is likely to have a particularly large impact on trucking businesses that operate cold stores, because electricity typically accounts for about 30 per cent of their costs. In New South Wales, electricity prices are set to rise 16 per cent on average, with nine percentage points of the increase coming from the carbon tax. Businesses will need to take this cost increase into account, as well as the substantial increase expected in the cost of refrigerants. Trucking businesses offering intermodal services will also face cost rises, with Pacific National imposing a 1.34 per cent carbon cost surcharge and the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service imposing a 2.04 per cent
surcharge. Mr St Clair said trucking businesses would also face a 2.4 cents per litre increase in their effective fuel tax from 1 July 2012. Many registration charges will also increase. The fuel tax and registration charge increases will cost a typical ownerdriver about $2,800 per year. For a trucking business with ten prime movers and semitrailers, the cost increase is likely to be about $41,800 per year. Every trucking business needs to talk to its customers about increasing freight rates or adjusting their fuel surcharges. Its a hard ask, but the industrys customers need to understand that our costs are going up and we cannot absorb them, he said.

SA speeding reforms
s part of the South Australian Governments strategy to reduce road deaths, fines for low-level speeding will be reduced but demerit points will double from 1 September this year. Fees for higher level offences will increase. Treasurer Jack Snelling said the enforcement was necessary to save lives and reduce injuries on South Australian roads, hoping that the changes would encourage people to stick to the speed limit. The speeding fine for speeding less than 10km/h will fall from $260 to $150 but demerit points will
double from one to two, Mr Snelling said. Speeding more than 45km/h will see the fine increase from $671 to $900 with demerit points increasing from six to nine points. As Treasurer I would be more than happy to see a reduction in revenue from speeding infringements but for that to happen there needs to be a reduction in the number of speeding drivers, he said. Increasing the fines for drivers blatantly disregarding the law and increasing demerit point across the board will hopefully do just that.
The number of speeding offenders has reduced in recent years with a declining road toll but almost a quarter of motorists still exceed the speed limit. Infringement data from the South Australian Police shows 38 per cent of expiation notices issued in 2011 were for speeding by less than 10km/h over the limit, while about 79 per cent were for speeding by less than 15km/h over the limit. The changes will see the introduction of a new bracket with brackets to incur every 10 km/h between 10 km/h and 30 km/h.
he Shell Company of Australia Limited has officially opened a new Biodiesel facility at its Newport Terminal in Victoria. This new state of the art facility has enabled Shell to launch BioDiesel 20 into the Australian market, a world first for the company. Shells new B20 diesel fuel will be offered to Shells Commercial customers, initially from its Newport terminal in Melbourne. The biofuel component of Shell BioDiesel 20 is being sourced from an Australian biocomponent producer, Australian Renewable Fuels (ARF), based in Barnawartha in regional Victoria. Victorian Minister for Employment & Industrial Relations, Manufacturing,
Exports & Trade, The Hon. Richard Dalla-Riva MLC, officiated at the launch of the new Shell BioDiesel facility, which was held at the terminal. Shells investment in this facility will give people in Victoria greater access to biodiesel produced in regional Victoria, which will support jobs and investment and expand the local biofuels industry. Shell Vice-President of Downstream Australia, Andrew Smith, added, The launch of the facility represents one of the largest projects Shell has undertaken at its Newport terminal in ten years. It is also tremendous to have another Shell world first happen here in Australia. This investment of almost $5 million
included $2 million from the Victorian Government in the development of the new tank and blending facility. While there are many benefits to customers from using biodiesel blends up to B20, we are especially pleased that it will support Victorias regional economy, notably the Barnawartha area, said Mr Smith. He continued, After a lengthy and robust quality assurance process we are confident of supplying a B20 product of consistently high quality to the Victorian market. This has been a collaborative effort between Shell, the Victorian Government and ARF in Barnawartha. This innovation gives Shell customers additional choice from our existing range of quality fuels.

he Australian Logistics Council (ALC) and GS1 Australia have joined forces to create a new high level industry working group the ALC Supply Chain Standards Working Group to improve supply chain efficiency and product traceability. The working group will consist of industry experts from across the supply chain who will focus on better aligning the transport and logistics sector with Australian industry in the adoption of global standards for identification, information capture and sharing across supply chains. Australias rising freight task, coupled with low levels of productivity in
the transport sector means industry must use all the tools at its disposal to improve supply chain efficiency, explained ALC Managing Director, Michael Kilgariff. Central to this is adopting a whole of supply chain approach to the way in which we identify and utilise new and emerging technologies, as well as foster new opportunities on the horizon. The ALC Supply Chain Standards Working Group will play an important role in the future growth and prosperity of the freight logistics industry by improving productivity through improved supply chain
efficiency and product and shipment traceability. GS1 Australia CEO Maria Palazzolo added, Many Australian industries have already adopted GS1 standards to reduce supply chain costs and are now seeking the same approach from their transport and logistics providers. The limited use of global standards is not confined to Australia and has resulted in the recent establishment of a GS1 Global T&L Interest Group. I am extremely pleased that the ALC has agreed to create this Working Group to align with industry requirements both locally and globally, she said.

Toll restructure
oll Global Logistics, a division of Toll Group, has announced a restructure that will combine its finished vehicle distribution service with automotive storage, processing and rectification specialist, PrixCar, the 50-50 joint venture between Toll and K-Line AutoLogistics Pty Ltd. As a result, Toll said it will sell down its finished vehicle distribution service, which is part of its Toll Global Logistics Automotive business (formerly Toll AutoLogistics), to establish a more sustainable and competitive business model that will produce stronger
outcomes for both companies. The aim of this change is to provide its customers with a fully integrated, end-to-end supply chain management service. The net impact of the sale will be a $75 million after tax cash inflow to Toll, and a pre-tax gain of approximately $47 million ($37 million after tax). Toll will retain its 50 per cent interest in PrixCar. For the 2012 financial year, Toll Global Logistics finished vehicle distribution service is expected to have revenues of around $158 million and
earnings before interest and tax of more than $11 million. Following the restructure, Toll will account for its 50 per cent share of PrixCars earnings as associate earnings. The transfer of Tolls finished vehicle distribution service to PrixCar is expected to take place early in the new financial year and is subject to usual conditions. Toll Global Logistics, Automotive will retain its parts logistics service in Australia and Asia, as well as its finished vehicle distribution service in Asia.

K200 and a cutaway cab display, at the 2012 International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show in Melbourne in March. Kenworths Director Sales and Marketing, Andrew Hadjikakou, said he was delighted with the response from customers, drivers and industry media. Everybody was impressed with the driver-friendly innovations. And they liked the sleek, intuitive design with all important features within easy reach, said Mr Hadjikakou. The K200 is a perfect example of our philosophy of continuous improvement through evolutionary design. The new interior is fully appointed, and
extremely comfortable to operate and live in when on the road, said Mr Hadjikakou. In addition, by rearranging the console layout, Kenworth has added two extra storage compartments above the driver and another on the passenger side. One of our design objectives was to provide operators with as many practical storage options as possible, said Mr Hadjikakou. Where drivers store their gear is very subjective. So we offer a mix of closed lockers, open pockets and compartments with shelving. This makes our storage areas multi-purpose to suit individual needs.

WMC Group announces boost to vehicle distribution operations in New Zealand
MC Group, the importer and distributor of JAC Trucks and Higer Buses in Australia and New Zealand, has appointed the Wheelans Motor Group as master franchisee for New Zealand. The new arrangement is designed to increase both sales reach and penetration for the Higer and JAC brands in New Zealand, providing strong existing infrastructure, expertise and customer service via the Wheelans Motor Group and the existing dealer network. Phil Wheelans will take direct control of the Higer and JAC master franchises in New Zealand, while the separate but wholly owned Phil Wheelans Truck and Van Sales will continue selling and servicing Fuso trucks and other brands under separate management. According to managing director of the WMC Group, Jason Pecotic, the move is a logical step in the development of the brand. New Zealand is a relatively small, but still important market to us and the appointment of Phil Wheelans and his team at Wheelans Motor Group as master franchisee will ensure we have the infrastructure and the personnel on the ground to service all of our current and potential customers properly. The Wheelans Motor Group has been a Higer bus and JAC truck dealer since January 2012 and has a long, distinguished history in New Zealand as a Daimler Group truck dealer selling Mercedes Benz, Fuso, Sterling and Freightliner. The company also operates a large-scale truck and trailer rental business.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011
governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt
hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without
Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbournes Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.
As the son of highly regarded horse trainer John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite a young age and is now a well-known horse trainer himself. Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled around the country with Goldners Horse Transport from Adelaide and thats how the trucks started for me, says Wayne. I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner
fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.
