The program provides summer and year-round employment opportunities, workplace exposure and work readiness activities to youth who face socio-economic barriers to workplace success. The program targets youth, ages 14-19, who are New Haven residents and/or attend New Haven public schools. Early work experiences have proven effective in helping youth, serving as the foundation for future success in both the workplace and the community. Youth at Work has been very successful in providing youth with job opportunities during the summer months. Over 2,000 students apply for summer jobs but unfortunately the program can only employee approximately 600 students. Each year the number of applications increases but the number of available slots has decreased by 50% compared to summer of 2010. Applications for 2012 are due April 5, 2012.

Description: The Family Learning Center (FLC) is a family resource center based out of John S. Martinez School. The FLC provides an array of educational, recreational and cultural enrichment services which promote academic success, family empowerment, and school/community engagement. Specifically, the Family Learning Center (FLC) operates an after-school and summer program for up to 45 K-8th grade students who attend Martinez School. The summer program is a full day program and is licensed by the Connecticut State Department of Health. The FLC purposely works with a smaller pool of students to guarantee that each young person will get the individual attention and support that they need during after-school hours. Parents, siblings and other family members are encouraged to participate in activities sponsored by the FLC. Throughout the year, the FLC sponsors parent workshops that reinforce the importance of lifelong learning, family involvement in school, positive parenting and family economic success. During the after-school program and the summer camp, students are provided with a safe, well-structured, caring environment where they receive assistance on their homework and on other academic studies. Students participate in a wide range of cultural enrichment and recreational activities in which they learn new skills and discover new talents and interests. The program stresses positive interaction with all students and their family members. Ensuring that each child is safe, having fun and growing academically and socially are top priorities. We focus on helping children build strong relationships with staff and volunteers who are caring adult mentors and role models to many. Staff includes professionals who are bilingual in English and in Spanish and possess significant expertise in the fields of positive youth development, social services and education. Description: Represents an effort to divert youth from the formal juvenile justice system. New Havens JRBs are community-based and tailored to reflect demographics and diversity in New Havens communities. JRBs provide youth, who take responsibility for their actions, an opportunity to avoid going to Juvenile Court by facing a group of volunteer community members, their victims, their parent(s)/guardians, a law enforcement official and school officials. The New Haven JRB incorporates a Balanced and Restorative Justice approach, which balances the needs of the youth, the victim, and the community. Accordingly, the JRB assists the youth in developing an understanding of how his or her behavior affected the individual who was the subject of the crime and the community in which he or she lives, acknowledging that the behavior was harmful to themselves and others both directly and indirectly. The JRB also enables the child to take action to repair the harm, either directly, where possible, or indirectly. Finally, through this process, the JRB assists the child in developing competencies that will enable the child to effect necessary changes in their behavior to avoid re-offending in the future. The mission of the New Haven Family Alliance is to foster family well-being by strengthening parents ability to provide healthy nurturing environments for their children and by providing supports for children and youth so that they thrive emotionally, socially, academically and spiritually. We carry out this mission through individual and group strength based innovative interventions, and advocacy. We believe that healthy families are the foundation of a healthy community. Summer Site: 60 South Water St New Haven, CT 06519 Contact: Evelyn DeLeon Phone: 203-946-6937 Email: N/A Enrollment: 160 Ages: 10 - 13 Program Dates: TBD Cost: $0 Web Site: www.soundschool.com

Description: Sound Summer Exploring Aquaculture is a summer program that the New Haven Board of Education and the cooperating public school districts of Cheshire, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, North Branford, North Haven and West Haven have created. It is a unique three week academic and vocational marine education summer enrichment program for middle school students. The Sound School Regional Vocational Aquaculture Center is the site for the three-week program that serves over 150 students. The summer programs primary goals are: To provide a unique learning experience in the marine sciences that is not available anywhere else in the region. To bring together students of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds from neighboring communities in the Greater New Haven area, enabling them to get to know one another, form friendships, and overcome fears and stereotypes that develop from segregation and isolation between communities. The Sound Summer Program consists of nine curricular modules spanning three levels of instruction. The first year curriculum includes Marine Math and Navigation, Marine Technology I (lobster pot construction) and Maritime Connections (a study of local history and social development). Second-year level instruction includes modules in Marine Science Practicum, Marine Technology II (fishing rod construction) and the Sail Training and Seamanship/Small Boat Program using the several rowing dories and small sailing sharpies. Field/boat trips, on-the-water activities, laboratories and hands-on /take home projects are all significant components of the Sound Summer Program at all levels and are designed to complement classroom learning. Field trips typically visit the Norwalk Maritime Center, Lighthouse Point, the New Haven Colony Historical Society, Meigs Point Nature Center and the different ecological regions of the Hamonassett Beach Park, and Lake Saltonstall and Lakes Maltby. First and second year students are on the water frequently, continuing their education aboard research vessels for a more hands-on experience. The most memorable trip for a second-year student is the extended day deep sea fishing trip, aboard the ferry, Island Rover, practicing boating safety, navigation and seamanship skills. Third year students have three five-day modules which include; Science Along Connecticuts waterways, (proficiency in maneuverability and emergency handling of canoes), Adventure Teamwork (leadership training safety, trust, and team building skills, and Marine Ecology (studying the ecological diversity of the region, while performing community service at the Connecticut Coastal Center, at Milford Point). Field trips are a daily event, and include the West River, Farm River, Quinnipiac River, Mill River, Lake Wintergreen, Deer Lake Reservation, Hamonassett Beach Park, and Milford Point. The third year experience culminates in an overnight camping trip for all students and staff at Deer Lake. Emphasis throughout the entire three years of the Sound Summer Program is on cooperation, teamwork and learning together, as opposed to competition. Through cooperative classroom and practical learning activities and on-the-water collaboration, students closely interact with their peers from different racial, ethnic and community backgrounds and begin to develop friendships. These new friendships strengthen for the students who chose to return for the second and third years of the program as challenges become more difficult and the program more intensive. Principal is Rebecca Gratz. Please contact Evelyn DeLeon at 203-946-6937 X2311 for information.

Description: Are you looking for a fun and educational experience for your children this summer? Camps meet daily from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Before care (8 am to 9 am) and after care (4 pm to 5 pm) services are also available. Summer is a time of growth and discovery, and summer camps are the source of countless enriching and memorable experiences for children. At the Yale Peabody Museum, summer camp provides the opportunity to learn about natural and cultural history in a relaxed setting, through fun and engaging hands-on experiences. The Museums world-class collections and exhibits serve as a truly unique backdrop to each weeks program. While some camps focus on a specific topic or set of skills, others are broad surveys of everything the Peabody has to offer! We ran our first two camps in 2004 and over the course of the next four years grew to 12 camp programs. In 2009 we added camps at our Community Education Center at West Campus with its on-site natural areas, spacious facility and access to collections that now reside at West Campus. We plan a healthy mix of interactive learning activities, field trips, creative arts and play, with at least some time spent outside each day. Our staff is trained to create an environment that is both physically and emotionally safe, and one in which the experience of every child is important. Please note that some of our camps will fill by late winter, and most will be full by the end of spring, so dont hesitate to register or contact us if you are interested. We sincerely hope we can provide your child with some of those opportunities to grow and discover, and experiences they will remember fondly for the rest of their lives. A limited number of full and partial need-based scholarships are available. To be eligible, those seeking scholarships must apply by May 2, 2011 (you will be asked to submit copies of your familys most recent tax documents). Other restrictions apply. At a minimum, the Program Registration Form and a $100 deposit are required to reserve a space for your child in one of our summer programs. If your childs camp is canceled two months prior to the start of camp a full refund will be issued. If the camp is canceled less than two months before the start of your childs camp the refund of the deposit is subject to our ability to fill your childs space. Please note that some of our camps will fill by late winter, and most will be full by the end of spring, so dont hesitate to register or contact us if you are interested. We sincerely hope we can provide your child with opportunities to grow and discover, and experiences to remember fondly for the rest of his or her life.
