Many Shamong Township
residents have been convert-
ing to gas in recent months, ac-
cording to township adminis-
trator Sue Onorato at the town
committee workshop meeting
on Tuesday, June 26.
Gas, which costs about a
third of the price of oil, began
to be installed in the township
in early fall of last year.
Areas that were affected by
the change include the Win-
chester Ridge section, near the
Shamong Diner on Route 206
and Indian Mills Road.
Its a great benefit to the
residents, Onorato said.
Lake to be treated
Indian Mills Lake will be
treated this summer for the
first time since 2009.
In order to treat it, we have
to renew the agreement with
Princeton Hydro, said Onora-
to.
Princeton Hydro is a
provider that the town has
used for the treatment over the
course of many years. They of-
fered a better price than other
companies, officials said.

Andrew Rider owned a large
cranberry farm in the Pinelands
in the early 20th century.
It was known in the communi-
ty that he paid his workers in
cash after seven weeks of work in
the bogs.
In 1916, about a quarter-mile
away from Atsion Village, he was
readying to disburse the funds
that he had withdrawn from a
bank in Hammonton when a
band of eight men, a few of whom
were dressed as women, jumped
out of the woods wielding guns.
The group of men started
shooting, said tour guide Bar-
bara Solem. Everybody in the
car was shot.
Andrews brother, Henry, was
shot in the neck and ultimately
bled to death.
The car then was able to flee
from the crime scene and reach
safety.
The would-be robbers had ar-
rived in town in a vehicle with an
out-of-state license plate, which
was unusual for the time period.
A member of the community
luckily penned the plate number
due to the oddity of the car being
there, which eventually led to all
suspects being caught by authori-
ties.
When the state acquired Whar-
ton Tract in 1954 off of present-
day Route 206 in Shamong Town-
ship, there was graffiti through-
out Atsion Mansion in Atsion Vil-
lage.
One drawing remains: a car
that appears to be racing away
from a scene.
The graffiti is dated 1923; just
years after the sensational mur-
der shook the community.
For some reason, when they
(the state) did the restoration,
they thought it was interesting
and they decided to leave it, said
Solem, who gives tours as a volun-
teer and is also a local author.
The state restored the outside
of the mansion shortly after pur-
chasing the tract for $3 million,
but the inside remained shut for
more than 50 years.
They did eventually do the
restoration, she said. There
was tremendous damage inside of
the house.
In the last few years, tours
were only offered intermittently.
The cost of the restoration
reached $1.3 million.

ecologically sound, pragmatic,
long lasting solutions.
The funds for the treatment,
which will amount to $935, are
provided in the municipal budget.
The company is charging Sha-
mong less this year than it did in
2009, Onorato said.
Theyve always done a great
job for us, she added.
Before beginning the treat-
ment, the company will need to
get a Department of Environmen-
tal Protection permit and notify
residents.
Depending on when the permit
is approved, the treatment should
begin in approximately four to six
weeks.
Volunteer to be chosen
The committee deliberated on
potential applicants to recom-
mend to be Shamongs Volunteer
of the Year. Two names will be
chosen for consideration at the
Tuesday, July 10 committee meet-
ing.

Tree trimming update
The township has been in talks
with PSE&G in hopes to make
Packenah Trails appearance be
improved in coming days.
Atlantic City Electric will be
trimming trees on Tuckerton
Road in either August or early in
the fall as well. Details will soon
be mailed by the company to 125
houses in that area and informa-
tion will be posted on Shamong
Townships website, www.sha-
mong.net.
Solar power cuts costs
The solar panels that were in-
stalled on the municipal building
and maintenance building
through a PPA (Power Purchase
Agreement) in May have begun to
show savings to the township.
In their first bill, the township
saved approximately 24 percent
on electricity costs.
Its only one month, said
Onorato to the committee mem-
bers.
On average, the township ex-
pects to save 30 percent.
Committee considers
Scout project
Boy Scout Jack Dougherty is
en route to becoming an Eagle
Scout and is looking to volunteer
his time in the township, specifi-
cally around the Veterans Memo-
rial.
Dougherty would inquire as to
if any names need to be added to
the memorial and perhaps do
some plantings around the me-
morial, which would save the
township on labor costs.
Theyre just trying to enhance
it, explained Onorato.

Rich Vosler, a resident of Sha-
mong, has announced the release
of his brand new, second book, A
Beautiful Love.
Its a story that begins in 1986
when Rich met his wife Joanne
and they began their life together.
After many moves across state
lines and across the country, they
settled in North Georgia, where
the family grew from three to
nine children. During their ninth
year there, Joanne was diagnosed
with a rare form of liver cancer
and ultimately died nine months
later.
This is the story of their de-
tailed journey together, including
the challenge of raising a large
family alone.
Vosler writes about the funny,
sometimes tearful and very faith-
ful road his wonderful family has
traveled.

The 20th annual Kiki Konstan-
tinos Scholarship Golf Tourna-
ment is scheduled for Tuesday,
July 24, at the beautiful Little Mill
Country Club in Marlton. Pro-
ceeds of the event fund scholar-
ships for outstanding graduates
of the Lenape Regional High
School District (Cherokee,
Lenape, Shawnee and Seneca
high schools).
The Konstantinos Scholarship
Foundation was established in
1993 to honor former Lenape Re-
gional High School District Su-
perintendent, K. Kiki Konstanti-
nos, who served in this position
for more than 30 years. Through
this yearly golf tournament, the
foundation raises money to con-
tinue Kikis work of fostering ex-
cellence in education by award-
ing individual scholarships to
outstanding students for higher
education.

As rough as things are in our coun-
try our economy is still poor, unem-
ployment is extremely high and the
Phillies cant seem to win a baseball
game anymore things could be a lot
worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in China, where we recently learned of
how real and barbaric the nations one-
child-only policy really is.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
236 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, were free to do as we please.
This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places in the Middle
East and abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
today.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Sustainable Parks Plan, which seeks to
augment programs, offerings, and ameni-
ties at our state parks, to draw more visi-
tors and enhance revenues while maintain-
ing the integrity of our parks and historic
sites.

tures in the village area, Solem
said maps are available.
The Atsion Park Office, where
reservations for large groups can
be made, is in the old village
store.
This was the center of the
community for people, she ex-
plained.
Atsion Village historically was
a company town, no matter for
what industry the occupants were
working.
This is a whole village that
was established over 250 years
ago, she said.
The mansion was built in 1826
when the village was experienc-
ing its greatest prosperity.
This is the time when 120 men
worked in the iron furnace and
600 to 700 people were sustained
by the iron works, she said.
The town consisted of the man-
sion, several dwellings for work-
ers, the company store, church,
sawmill, gristmill and blacksmith
shop.
The mansion was built in the
Greek Revival style and was said
to resemble the store.
Even on one of the hottest days
of the year, the air in the mansion
was cool.
The house has a north-south
exposure, Solem said. That was
done purposely to allow for maxi-
mum sunlight as well as ventila-
tion.
There is no furniture in the 14-
room mansion due to the lack of
electricity, heat and air condition-
ing.
Many of the fireplaces were
torn off of the walls during the
restoration, though some could
be remounted.
A color analysis was also done.
Today, the colors on the walls
match the ones that the inhabi-
tants of times past used to see.
The tour winds through the
house, stopping in each room
other than the servants rooms on
the third floor, while Solem tells
many known details about its ex-
tensive history.
In the future, more tour times
may be possible if Atsion is able
to train more volunteer guides.

open to the public, Solem said.

student-athletes earned spots on
the 2011-12 New Jersey Athletic
Conference All-Academic Team.
The number represents the
most Ospreys who ever have qual-
ified for NJAC All-Academic hon-
ors, easily surpassing the previ-
ous Stockton mark of 64 all-aca-
demic performers in 2009.
The 92 Ospreys were among a
league-record 656 student-athletes
chosen from the 10 NJAC institu-
tions. To be eligible, student-ath-
letes must be sophomores, jun-
iors or seniors in a conference-
sponsored sport with a minimum
3.2 grade-point average.

The Seneca Booster Club in
conjunction with Seneca Football
will be holding its eighth annual
Golf Tournament on Monday,
July 16 at Little Mill Country
Club in Marlton. Registration and
lunch kicks off the festivities at
11:30 a.m. The golfing starts at 1
p.m. with a four-person scramble,
shotgun start. Prizes will be
given to the first, second and
third place teams, longest drive,
and closest to the pin. You may
even win a car from Lucas
Chevrolet for a hole in one! Din-
ner, awards and auctions will
complete the tournament. For
those who do not wish to golf, din-
ner may be purchased separately.
