Determinism more important than latency Securit important only in some s ituations, reliability is often through redundancy, cost is a major factor 12.Allow chip manufactures to pack more and more transistors in to the same sili con area,so although chip are the same size and same price as in the past, greate r performance become available. 13. The linear bus topology offers the CAN bus a range of advantages: The wiring complexity is low. This factor plays an especially large role in auto mobiles. An economical and easy to manage twisted wire pair serves as the transmission me dium. CAN stations can be subsequently added to and removed from the existing CAN bus relatively easily. Only the connection to the bus line must be made or disconnec ted. This aspect plays a significant role, especially with trouble shooting and repairs. The breakdown of a CAN station has no immediate impact on the CAN bus. All the o ther stations can communicate unconstrained. The disadvantages of this bus topology have the following effect on the CAN bus: The bus line cannot be designed arbitrarily long since the electrical properties (e.g. signal reflections) set physical limits in combination with the transmiss ion speed. The same is also valid for the branch lines to the control units in the automobi le. Depending on the transmission speed they may not exceed a certain length. In order to optimise the signal quality the ends of the bus line must be "termin ated" with load resistors. A cable end which is not correctly terminated can ma ke the entire bus inoperative, especially with a high transmission speed. 14. Prioritization of messages,Guarantee of latency times,Configuration flexibil ity,

Multicast reception with time synchronization,System wide data consistency Multimaster

18.Required Performance Before we get started, let's have a closer look at typical worst-case scenarios for CAN communication: The highest baud rate currently supported is 1Mbit. The l ongest possible message contains 8 data bytes. The shortest possible message (0 data bytes) takes about 50 bit times on the bus. At 1Mbit, 50 bit times correspo nd to 50 microseconds. If the goal is that an application handles CAN interrupts in real-time, the micr ocontroller would need to "digest" an incoming message with 8 data bytes in less than 50 microseconds. Potentially this is the shortest time the next receive in terrupt could occur. Keep in mind that to leave enough MCU operating time for the real application (w hatever is handled besides CAN communication), the "digesting" should take far l ess than 50 microseconds. Fortunately, modern CAN interfaces have hardware filtering and buffering feature s that help with the task of ignoring unwanted communication and buffering backto-back messages.
