DESIGN MEMORANDUM ON STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF TWO LANE RCC ROAD BRIDGE ON RIVER MAN AT 120 m D/s OF MAN PROJECT

1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MAN PROJECT :

Man Project is a major irrigation project located near village Zirabad on river Man, a tributary of Narmada for development of irrigation in Dhar District of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the 29 major projects identified in the Narmada Master Plan for implementation. The project site is about 2 km from village Jeerabad located on Khalghat-Manawar-Amjhera district road and is about 22 km from Manawar.

SALIENT FEATURES OF THE PROJECT: The salient features of the project are as below : The project has a composite dam consisting of 332 m long earth dam, 60 m long left overflow section, 138 m long overflow section and 113 m long right non-overflow section. The maximum height of the dam above the river bed is 53.0 m. The reservoir lake is spread over in an area of about 11.11 sq. km and creates a storage of 145.03 M Cum. There are 9 Nos. radial gates of size 12.00m x 11.55 m. There are two irrigation outlets one each in the left and right flanks of the earth dam and two canals Right Bank Canal (16.27 kms.) and Left Bank Canal (10.92 kms.) off-take from them to irrigate a CCA of 10,566 ha. and 4,434 ha. respectively. The project on completion shall provide irrigation in an area of 15000 hectares of 53 villages of Manawar, Gandhawani & Kukshi Tehsils of Dhar district. The project shall provide irrigation benefits to 7851 families. The principal salient features of the project are as follows :-

DETAILS OF STRUCTURE

The two lane multiple spans RCC T Beam bridge has been proposed at 120 m. downstream of Man dam. IRC class AA tracked vehicle and wheeled vehicle loading on carriage way have been considered for design. The total length of bridge is 144 mts. (9 spans of 16 mts each), deck slab width of 7.5 m with kerbs of 475 mm on either side, giving the total width of bridge 8.5 m has been provided. Three nos. longitudinal Tbeams spaced at 2.5 m intervals with 5 nos. cross beams at 3.813 m c/c are provided to stiffen the main girders. An expansion joint between every span is provided between the end cross girders spaced at 750 mm resting on the pier. The hammer head type pier with size of 3.5 m ( 2m rectangular ) x 1.5 m , semi- circular cut water and ease water on both sides of radius 750 mm provides slender substructure and 8 nos. piers have been used to support superstructure of whole bridge. The end spans of the bridge are supported on the abutments. Pier cap resting over the top of pier having varying thickness from 600 mm to 1200 mm. The length of pier cap is kept at 7.8 m and width is 1.5 m. 6. DESIGN DATA USED 7.50 m 16.0 m 2.50 m 5 Nos. M 20 HYSD Fe 415 25 kN/m3 22 kN/m3 0.30 m 1.50 m 0.60 m to 1.2 m 0.500 m 0.250 m

STRUCTURAL DESIGN - DESIGN CRITERIA

The deck slab is supported on all four sides, the bending moment for dead load is computed using Pigeauds theory. Computation for longitudinal girders bending moment due to live load and its distribution are estimated by using two rational methods viz. Courbons method and Hendry Jaegar method. Cross beams dead load bending moment is computed considering a trapezoidal distribution of the weight of deck slab and wearing coat including of self weight. It is considered continuous over two spans. The piers have been designed for the following two cases : (a) (b) 10. Dry condition Submerged condition REFERENCES

The following BIS codes/ Manuals have been referred for the design: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (viii) (ix) (x) (xi) Essentials of Bridge Engineering by D.
