Pied Pumkin Returns To Vallican
Kick of your shoes and hold onto your hat. Beloved BC
folk trio Pied Pumkin is back for a brief reunion tour this
July, including a concert Tursday, July 19 at the Vallican
Whole! Te doors open at 7:30 pm with the show starting
at 8 pm.
Rick Scott (dulcimer), Joe Mock (guitar and piano) and
Shari Ulrich (violin, piano, fute, dulcimer, guitar) are in-
famous for their fearless arrangements, fawless harmon-
ies and theatrical hi-jinx, Pied Pumkin pioneered rogue
folk in BC and served as a soundtrack for the 70s. Tey
have toured far and wide and sold over 30,000 LPS from
the stage.
Te group has long been a beloved fxture of the BC
and Canadian folk music scene. Tey frst performed at
the Vallican Whole when it was still just a hole helping
to raise funds to put a roof on the building. Since then,
theyve managed to return to the Whole whenever they
re-unite. Why? Because its the perfect place to hear the
Pumkin in their natural environment. Several of their
songs are sourced in the Kootenays, such as Kootenay
Bark and Orville Goes To Te Country.
When Shari lef the Pumkin to join the Hometown
Band, Rick and Joe continued touringas Pied Pear. Pied
Pumkin reunited in 1998 afer a 20 years hiatus, releas-
ing the CD retrospective Plucking DeVine in 1998 and a
live album Pied Alive in 2000. In 2006 their frst childrens
album, Pumkids, won the 2006 Canadian Folk Music
Award and Parents Choice honours in the US. In 2011
Pied Pear had its frst reunion tour, releasing a Collectors
Edition of two LPs on a single CD.
Pied Pumkin is reuniting this July for an all-to-brief
three week tour. Tour details and more information is

Science Camps
Hit Grand Forks And Christina Lake
Selkirk College will be running 3 science camps this
summer for youth ages 6 to 12 years of age. Camps are 3
days in duration. Two will be in Grand Forks and one at
Christina Lake (Christina Lake Welcome Centre).
Te camps have a fun, interactive learning environment
which includes some basic electricity, chemistry, physics,
and biology. Participants will be given lots of opportun-
ity for hands on experience. Local science teacher, Haley
Rymer, is excited about the opportunity to expose chil-
dren to the fun of science at a younger age.
Tis program is supported by Community Futures
Boundary, Kootenay Association of Science and Technol-
ogy, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary in partner-
ship with Selkirk College. Dates are Wednesday, July 4 to
Friday, July 6, Tuesday, July 24 to Tursday, July 26 and
Tuesday, August, 28 to Tursday, August 30.

cess of the Shimmy Mob 2012 event!
We aim to raise awareness about violence against women
and their children and to bring funds to local societies to
support af liated services. Included in our local Shimmy
Mob campaign are Castlegar and District Community

Donors were allowed the opportunity to designate

and diligently to learn the fash mob choreography, col-

Kootenay Lake Water Levels
With the recent rainfall and high snowpack this spring,
there has been some concern from local area citizens re-
garding how Kootenay Lake operates and why the water
level is near a 40-year high.
While we understand that the high water level is a con-
cern for fooding, the conditions that we fnd ourselves in
today are as a result of natural conditions.
Te snow pack at Red Fish Creek in 2012, just north of Nel-
son, BC, was the highest snow pack on record. Te amount
of precipitation that the region has experienced in June is
forecast to be the most precipitation we have ever received in
any individual month, including the winter months. Tese
conditions are not isolated to the Kootenay Lake region, as
fooding has been a problem all across the province.
As many of our readers know, FortisBC operates four
dams on the Kootenay River. FortisBCs Corra Linn dam
is the closest to Kootenay Lake and can operate as the con-
trol point for water fows out of Kootenay Lake.
However, just upstream from Corra Linn is Grohman
Narrows, which creates a physical restriction of water
fowing out of Kootenay Lake. Since mid-March, FortisBC
has been operating Corra Linn dam so that the maximum
amount of water can fow out of Kootenay Lake, as limited
by Grohman Narrows.
Tere are two dams upstream that also play a role in
Kootenay Lake levels BC Hydros Duncan Dam and the
Libby Dam operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engin-
eers. Its estimated that without Libby and Duncan dams in
place today, that the current lake level would be approxi-
mately seven feet higher with the natural infow condi-
tions we have seen this year.
FortisBC holds the International Joint Commission (IJC)
order for Kootenay Lake, which was established in part to
ensure that Kootenay Lake peak elevations would be lower
than if the dam had not been constructed. Each year, For-
tisBC presents its annual operation of Kootenay Lake to
the IJC Kootenay Lake Board of Control, which is then fol-
lowed by a public meeting. Tis year the IJC meeting will be
held in Bonners Ferry in early fall and FortisBC welcomes
all concerned lake residents to attend. Id ask that if your

To Local Skate Park Society
Tursday June 21st is known internationally as Go
Skateboarding Day and can now be recognized as the day
Nelson & District Credit Union (NDCU) stepped up to
help Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skate Park Society (KLOS-
PS) members realize their dream of an outdoor skate park
for Nelson. Tom Atkins of NDCU met with Rob Levesque
and several local skaters at the foot of Baker Street to cele-
brate the announcement of the donation of $10,000.
Te relationship between NDCU and KLOSPS goes back
10 years when Nelson skate park pioneers approached the
Credit Union requesting some help, refects Tom Atkins
of NDCU. It all started with some in-kind donations of
binders, pens and some photocopying. Tere was an in-
formal group of skaters, parents and community members
that got the ball rolling with a meeting at the old Lord Nel-
son banquet hall. NDCU recognized the tireless commit-
ment of this group early on, and we are happy to be here
today with this announcement of $10,000 for the Nelson
outdoor skate park.
NDCUs commitment to youth goes far beyond fnancial
literacy and scholarships. An investment by credit union
members in an asset such as this park will add signifcantly
to the vitality of this community. Youth arts, culture, so-
cial responsibility and recreation initiatives are also widely
supported through their community investment program.
Robert Levesque, society president adds, Te future
looks bright. Tis has been one heck of a year, we got our
location, weve acquired a design and the community sup-
port has been phenomenal. Tis kind of donation means

Summertime Fun For Kids
Tis July promises to be a great opportunity for kids to
experience the valley at its fnest. Slocan Valley Recreation
is ofering a wide range of programs to make sure they
have a great experience with excellent instructors.
If theyre into skateboarding and ready to take their
skills to a new level, Skateboard Camp ofers a chance to
improve their ride. Tere will be road trips to other skate
parks, barbeques, and swag like you wouldnt believe! A
crew of local skaters and Shandy Campos of BC Action
Adventures will be on hand to oversee all the fun. Te pro-
gram is timed from 10:30am 5pm daily from Monday
July 16th to Friday the 20th so riders can make it out from
Nelson and Castlegar via the local bus system.
Back by popular demand, Bugs Birds and Bees-Artists
Summer Camp (July 16th to 20th ) brings kids together
with local artists and movement instructors for an experi-
ence that will inspire and entertain.
If they love the great outdoors and are between the ages
of 9 to 13, have them join our Footsteps Outdoor Summer
Camp. From July 25th to 28 theyll hike, mountain bike,

Te popular Slocan Red Cross Swim Kids program be-

On July 12 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Clive Langton, a
Director of the Raw Food Society of BC (RawBC), will be
in Nelson giving a health presentation at the Kootenay Co-
op, 295 Baker Street.
RawBC is a non-proft society promoting health through
eating more living foods.
RawBC has been experiencing increased growth as
people in BC have been realizing that there are benefcial
and natural ways to increase ones health by making some
simple changes.
Given that our medical paradigm is overstretched trying
to deal with the increased sickness and diseases, people are

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is partnering with BC
Ideas to provide fve $10,000 cash awards to reward in-
novative solutions addressing issues which will improve
the lives of residents in the Columbia Basin region.
BC Ideas: Solutions for Stronger Communities is an on-
line competition seeking to identify solutions to deal with
challenges facing BC communities now and in the future.
Tis collabetition is designed to promote collaboration
and information sharing among participants and experts
to improve well-being and strengthen society. All stages
of solutions are welcome and encouraged, from ideas to
established programs.
BC Ideas is a unique platform that recognizes and helps
advance innovative ideas and projects that may beneft
Basin communities, said Neil Muth, CBT President and
CEO. Participants can share their ideas to gain profle
and solicit feedback. In turn, CBTs support for the com-
petition will enable successful Basin innovators to turn
their ideas into action.
Although a province-wide initiative, CBT has commit-
ted to providing fve $10,000 awards to be given specif-
ically to entries from individuals and organizations that
identify innovative and sustainable solutions that have
strong potential to result in the greater social, economic
and environmental well-being and self-suf ciency of
people and communities in the Columbia Basin.
Entries will be evaluated for innovation, impact and
sustainability. BC Ideas has over $200,000 in awards avail-

Take Precautions To Avoid West Nile
Interior Health is reminding residents to take extra
precautions against mosquito bites this summer. West
Nile virus, a disease that is spread from infected birds to
humans through mosquito bites, has been present in BC
since 2009.
West Nile virus (WNv) was frst detected in BC in the
South Okanagan during the summer of 2009. To date
there have been three human cases of WNv acquired in
our province - all of which have been in the Okanagan.
Several WNv cases in IH residents also occur due to travel
to nearby provinces or states with higher levels of WNv
mosquito activity.
If you have been bitten by a mosquito, you do not have
to be tested for WNv, says Jennifer Jeyes, Communicable
Disease Specialist with Interior Health. Most people who
become infected with the virus will have no symptoms or
ill efects at all. About 20% of infected people may experi-
ence mild to severe fu-like symptoms and less than 1%
of people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will get
severely ill. Te elderly and people with compromised im-
mune systems are generally more at risk of developing a
severe illness in response to WNv exposure.
If you have mild health symptoms that you think might
be from the West Nile virus, you should get plenty of rest,
drink fuids, and avoid alcohol. If your symptoms persist
and seem to be getting more severe, call your doctor.
While the risk of becoming seriously ill from WNv in-
fection is low, it is important to remember there are pre-
ventative steps that everyone can take in order to reduce
the risk of infection. Te best protection against West Nile
virus is to avoid mosquito bites and to reduce mosquito
breeding areas.
Here are some simple things we can all do:
Use mosquito repellent - Apply mosquito repellent to
areas of exposed skin. Check the product label for instruc-
tions on proper use. Repellents containing DEET are safe
if the label precautions are followed. DEET-free products
are available, but may not provide as long-lasting protec-
tion. View the HealthFile on DEET (link below) for guide-
lines on how frequently to apply repellent.
Wear protective clothing - Avoid dark clothing - it tends
to attract mosquitoes. If you are in an area with lots of
mosquitoes, wear loose ftting, full-length pants and a
long-sleeved shirt to keep mosquitoes from biting. Mos-
quitoes that can carry WNv are most active at dusk and
at dawn. Avoid using perfumes, soaps, hair care products
and lotions with foral fragrances.
Install mosquito screens on windows and consider staying
indoors between dusk and dawn and in the early evening.
Prevent mosquito breeding around your home - It
doesnt take much time or water for mosquitoes to de-
velop from eggs into adults. Anything that can hold water
can be a mosquito breeding area. Identify and remove
potential breeding areas on your property - empty sau-
cers under fowerpots; change water in bird baths twice
a week; unclog rain gutters; drain tarps, tires, and other
debris where rain water may collect; and install a pump
in ornamental ponds or stock them with fsh. Stagnant
backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and
should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito
growth.
B.C. conducts a surveillance program for West Nile
virus which includes testing of dead birds in the corvid
family: crows, ravens, magpies and jays. Tese birds are
more likely than others to die from West Nile virus. Te
program also includes trapping and testing of mosquitoes
from numerous sites in the province. Members of the pub-
lic can report dead corvid birds (crows, ravens, magpies

Interior Health will continue to collect mosquitoes
for testing to detect and monitor the spread of the virus
through the 2012 season. Interior Health traps mosqui-
toes at 14 sites across the southern Interior and sends
them to the provincial lab for testing. Tey also work
with local governments to control mosquito populations
and coordinate planning. In the event that a positive
mosquito and/or bird are found in an area that previ-
ously has not been shown to have West Nile virus, the
public will be notifed.

Opportunity Links Society
At the June 12, 2012 board meeting, the Southern In-
terior Beetle Action Coalition (SIBAC) Directors voted in
favour of supporting the request from the Lardeau Val-
ley Opportunity Links Society for $10,000 funding to as-
sist with the completion of a Forest Inventory Investor
Package.
SIBAC Board member Greg Lay (RDCK Director and
Mayor of Kaslo) said the SIBAC Board viewed this ap-
plication for funding support as an opportunity to assist
a rural community deeply afected by the decline in the
forest industry to take a proactive approach to attract
wood based business to the area. Te SIBAC funding to
develop this package will help to broaden the community
contacts and connection with others working in the forest
industry, which will strengthen the committees capacity
to work in partnership, network around the region and
province, states Don Edwards (Lardeau Valley Oppor-
tunity Links Society President). Trough this project,
our hope and intent is to bolster the local economy by at-
tracting businesses and families to relocate to the Lardeau
Valley.
SIBAC is one of three Beetle Action Coalitions in BCs
Interior created in 2005 to 2006 to develop and imple-
ment mitigation plans in order to help afected com-
munities endure the impacts of the mountain pine beetle
epidemic. Te funding is intended to support projects
approved by the Beetle Action Coalitions that will create
business partnerships, diversify local and regional econ-
omies, fnd innovative and value-added uses for forest re-
sources and explore new industries to assist rural interior
communities through this transition.

Trying to recapture the magic of what has become
known locally as the best outdoor concert of 2011 RE-
VOLVER the greatest Beatles Tribute Band in the World
according to radio icon Red Robinson is making its
way back to Kootenay Lakeview Lodge in Balfour for a
return show Friday, July 6.
Te band from Vancouver covers the 3 decades of music
with 4 costume changes with members: Mike Sicoli, Mick
Dalla Vee, Rocket Norton on drums and Skip Prest, all
experienced pros capturing the music so well you truly
can close your eyes as the song goes and be transported
back through time.
And this year will be even bigger and better claims
owner Reg Clarkson. Te Nelson Grizzlies Rugby Club
has stepped up to present the show this year and will
beneft from an outdoor beer garden they will host on site.
Tis was not available to us last year, states Clarkson, so
this is a great improvement to an already great party.
Nelson Grizzlie board member Brian Garvin Jr. who at-
tended last years show with his family says When we had
the opportunity to participate in this event it was a no-

Enjoy Sweet Cherries Longer
You dont have just the summer season to enjoy the
sweet, juicy goodness of Northwest cherries. Simple pres-
ervation will have you enjoying them all year long.
1. Freeze Your Cherries - Freeze pitted cherries for the
best favour. Work with small amounts, 3 lbs to 5 lbs (1.5 to
2.5 kg) of fresh sweet cherries at a time to allow for quick
handling and freezing. Select frm, ripe sweet cherries.
Rinse and drain cherries thoroughly. Pack according to
preferred method below and freeze immediately. Method
1: Whole with stems. Spread cherries with stems intact in a
single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until frm. Pack into
freezer-proof containers or plastic freezer bags; remove
excess air, cover or fasten tightly and freeze. Frozen cher-
ries will last 10 to 12 months in the freezer.
Method 2: Dry Sugar Pack. Add 1/3 cup (75ml) sugar
for each pint of pitted or unpitted fresh sweet cherries;
toss lightly to coat cherries. Fill freezer containers or bags;
shake to pack fruit. Add more cherries to fll containers or
bags. Cover tightly and freeze.
2. Enjoy Canned Cherries -Unopened canned cherries
have a shelf life up to one year. Once open, canned cherries
should be kept in a covered container in the refrigerator
and used within a week. Maraschino cherries (the kind
you fnd adorning beverages) will last six to 12 months in
the refrigerator.
3. Dry Your Cherries - Packaged dried cherries will last
up to 18 months. Dry them at home for an easy and in-
expensive way to enjoy their favour in recipes all year.

You Wont Want To Miss Wayman
One Book, One Kootenay shortlisted author Tom Way-
man reads from his book of short fction, Boundary Coun-
try, Saturday, July 7 at 2 pm at the Nakusp Public Library.
Tom Waymans Boundary Country is a tour of this neck
of the woods and beyond through a collection of stories
that explore boundaries both human and geographical, to
which Wayman brings his gif for insightful observation
and wry humour.
Half of Boundary Countrys stories are set in Southeast-
ern BC, from a mystery amid the pine uplands near Osoy-
oos, to a community meeting in a hall above Nelsons Baker
Street. Other settings include Toronto, Vancouver, Eastern
Europe in the 1930s, and the U.S. during the Civil War.
A multiple award-winner, Wayman has penned more
than 20 books of poetry, essays, and fction. He taught
writing at Nelsons David Tompson University Centre,
at various colleges on the Coast and in the Okanagan, and
at the University of Calgary. His most recent collection
of poetry, Dirty Snow, was released in 2012 by Harbour
Publishing.
One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK), a project of the
Kootenay Library Federation, is a region-wide book club
that celebrates the work of the talented writers living in
the Kootenay Boundary. Two other great books, Rita
Moirs Te Tird Crop, and Sister, No Sister by Jennifer
Craig round out the shortlist. In addition to Waymans
reading, Moir and Craig will appear virtually through two
short flms created for the Kootenay Library Federation
by Kootenay flmmaker Amy Bohigian.
One Book, One Kootenay shortlisted books are chosen
by a panel of learned librarians. Now, its up to readers
to vote for the book all Kootenay booklovers should read
this year. All of the OBOK shortlisted books are available
in your local library.

more about the authors and their books, look for literary
events near you, and engage in online conversations or
post comments.
Ballot boxes will be at Kootenay libraries until August
