Yesterday's pain may be cause of today's migraine

New study finds link between migraine headaches and childhood adversity in women
11:04 PM, Jun 18, 2012 | Comments

Shelby Ledman knows what a migraine headache feels like. The Lafayette woman has suffered from them for more than five years. First, the pain originates in the forehead and then the pressure builds until it forces her to lie down. They were extreme to the point where I would have to shut myself in a dark room and block out all light and noise to prevent myself from getting sick, said the 26-year-old. Ledman said that sunlight, sinus infections, allergies, dental work and even stress can trigger her migraines. But a new study suggests that migraines, strokes and other inflammatory diseases may be connected to childhood adversity suffered by women. The study, which was published in a recent edition of The American Headache Societys journal Headache, found that adult women who suffer from migraines were more likely to report childhood adversity, including various types of abuse, neglect or family dysfunction such as divorce that occurred before the age of 18. For instance, about 71 percent of women with migraines reported suffering childhood adversity compared to 46 percent of women without headaches. The study used a sample size of 141 women between the ages of 18 and 50. About 100 of these women suffered frequent or infrequent headaches and 41 were headache free. One of the studys authors, Jagdish Khubchandani, is an assistant professor of community health education at Ball State University. He said there are several possible reasons why migraines may be linked to childhood adversity. A child who is abused continuously may become hypersensitive to pain in adulthood or as an adult they may

not be able to handle stress, he said. The researchers also found that childhood maltreatment is also linked to a variety of inflammation biomarkers that are associated with migraines. These biomarkers are also tied to increased stroke risk. The study subjects, all premenopausal women, are one of the populations at highest risk for stroke, according to the study. The researchers write, If causal, childhood maltreatment becomes an important target for prevention of migraine, stroke and other inflammatory diseases. However, there are limitations to the study. Khubchandani said the study only establishes a link, not a cause. But an actual experiment to establish causation would be unethical because researchers cannot simulate child abuse and then monitor the effects, he said. The fact that the adverse experiences are self-reported is also a limitation. When people are abused, sometimes they do not recall it or do not want to share that information, Khubchandani said. Ledman doesnt recall any abuse from her childhood. But she did experience her parents divorcewhen she was in the sixth grade. It put stress on the family, just because it was a divorce, she said.
