Glossary of Terms
To better understand the information presented in this section you should better
familiarize yourself with these terms.

Bridging Tap-Off PCB (BTO) - A circuit board used split the composite
video signal originating at the VCR, DVD player, satellite receiver, or other
suitable A/V source.

Composite Video - The originating at a VCR, DVD player, satellite receiver,

or other suitable A/V source.

LLAN (Local Local Area Network) - A term used to describe RS-485

communication used by a Scorer Computer to communicate to circuits boards.
It is referred to as a local LAN because it is exclusive to the group of lanes
controlled by a scorer computer. (See Serial Communication Controller (SCC)

RGBS (Red, Green, Blue, Sync) - A format of video describing the way in
which the video is sent over the cable.

Serial Communication Controller (SCC) - A circuit board that allows the

scorer computer to control the on/off and video switching of the monitor using
RS-485 communication.

Sync Separator Board (SSB) - A circuit board used to convert the

scoresheet video signal so that it can be displayed on the Wide Screen monitor.

TV-Only Monitor - A monitor that is used to display only the video sent from
a VCR or other suitable composite video source. This monitor cannot display
bowler's scoresheet.

Wide Screen Overhead Monitors 3

Overview
Brunswick Wide Screen overhead monitor packages come in three
configurations; Brunswick supplied LCD Wide Screen monitors, bowling center
supplied off-the-shelf Wide Screen monitors, and bowling center supplied off-
the-shelf SCART Wide Screen monitors (Europe).

When Brunswick supplies the LCD monitors, the center is able to turn the
monitors on/off and switch the scoring monitor between the scoresheet and TV
video through either the control desk or by using the remote control that comes
with the monitors. A TV-Only monitor is also an option. These commercial
quality monitors connect to the scoring system through a Wide Screen
Overhead Interface. The Scoresheet monitor used a Model BI interface while
the TV Only monitor uses the Model TVO interface.

If a bowling center supplies their own Wide Screen monitors, the Brunswick
scoring system converts the signal from the Scoring Computer so that it can be
displayed on the monitors. On/Off control and video switching between the
scoresheet and TV video must be done from the remote control that comes
with the monitor. In addition, the bowling center is responsible for running any
TV signal to the monitors. This type of monitor connects to the scoring system
using the Wide Screen Overhead Interface - Model CI.

For European installations a bowling center supplied monitor with a SCART

interface can be used. On/Off control of these monitors (from the front desk)
may be available if the monitor responds to the 12V signal on the SCART
connector. Otherwise the remote control that was supplied with the monitor
must be used to control the power. Switching between the scoresheet and TV
video is done through the remote control that comes with the monitor. The
bowling center is responsible for running their own TV signal to the monitor.
This type of installation is directly connected to the scoring system and does
not require the use of a Wide Screen Overhead Interface.

4 Wide Screen Overhead Monitors

Wide Screen Overhead Interface - Model BI and Model TVO
The Wide Screen Overhead Interface comes in three versions or models; BI,
CI, and TVO. For Brunswick Installed LCD monitors models BI and TVO are
used.

Model BI is used for the Scoresheet monitors and can adapt both scoresheet
and TV video signals and provides desk control to turn the monitor on/off and
switch between the TV and Scoresheet video.

Model TVO is used for the TV-Only monitors. It allows for the display of the
TV video and control of the monitor power. It does not provide the scoresheet
video signal. Refer to the figures titled Wide Screen Overhead Interface -
Model BI and Wide Screen Overhead Interface - Model TVO.

Wide Screen Overhead Monitors 9

Sync Separator Board (SSB)
The Sync Separator Board (SSB) adapts the scoresheet video signal so that it
can be used by the Wide Screen monitor. The board adapts the video signal in
two ways. First, the video signal goes through an amplifier which creates a
common ground for the four signals (RGBS) and keeps the signal level of each
at a level that the display can use. Second, the sync signal which is made up of
both vertical and horizontal signals (composite sync) is altered so that
horizontal and vertical are separated and supplied to the display through own
wires. Refer to figure titled Sync Separator Board (SSB).

Sync Separator Board (SSB)

(1) J1 VIDEO IN - Connection for the video signal coming from the
scoring computer.

(2) J2 POWER IN - Input for the +12VDC , and -12VDC power from the

All 5 LEDs (D9, D10, D13, D14 and D15) should be lit when this board is
powered up and connected to a scoring computer.

Wide Screen Overhead Monitors 11

Serial Communication Controller (SSC)
The Serial Communication Controller (SSC) allows a scorer computer to
"communication" with the monitors so that video selection (TV or Scoresheet)
and on/off can be controlled from the desk rather than the hand held remote
control that came with the monitor. The boards are daisy-chained together
from an RS-232 Converter attached to COM1 of a scorer computer allowing a
scoring computer control 8 lanes of scoresheet monitors and 4 TV-only
monitors.
Dipswitches on the board are used to set an unique ID for each SCC and to
determine whether the board will be used for scoresheet and TV or just TV.
Refer to the figure titled Serial Communication Controller (SCC).

(1) JP1 RS-485 TERMINATION - This jumper is used to termination
the RS-485 communications line at the last SCC board in the daisy chain.
Place the jumper as follows:

Configuration Jumper Position

Cable Continues from J2 Pin 1-2 (U)

Cable Does Not Continue from J2 Pin 2 -3 (T)

(2) JP2 WATCHDOG DISABLE - Jumper should be left open (hanging

off pin 1) or removed.

(3) J1 RS-485 IN - RS-485 input from the scoring computer or previous

SCC board in the daisy chain.

(4) J2 RS-485 OUT - RS-485 output to the next SCC board in the daisy
chain. See (1) JP1 RS-485 TERMINATION.

(5) J5 RS-232 OUT - RS-232 (Communication) output to the LCD

monitor.

(6) D6 DIR - This LED is lit when the SCC is transmitting data to the
scoring computer through the RS-485 connector.

(7) D7 TX - This LED is lit when there is data is being sent to the scoring
computer from any SCC over the RS-485 line. If the DIR LED is also
"on" when the TX LED is lit, the transmission is being sent by that SCC.

(8) D8 RX - This LED is lit when there is data is being received from the
scoring computer over the RS-485 line. This merely indicates that there
is receive traffic on the line, it may or may not be intended for this
specific SCC If it is, the SCC will respond, and the D6 (DIR) and the
D7 (TX) LEDs will light up briefly (during transmission of the
response).

(9) D9 RS-485 POWER - This LED is lit when the board is receiving
power through the RS-485 IN connector. This DOES NOT imply that
the RS-485 chain is properly terminated, just that there is continuity from
the scoring computer through the RS-485 daisy chain to this SCC. If this
LED is not lit, check your RS-485 connections from this board back to
the scoring computer.

(10) D10 DIAG - When this LED is flashing, it indicates that the board has
finished initializing and it is ready for use. If it is not flashing, there are
problems with the SCC board.

(13) S2 ADDRESS - This bank of switches is used to set the lane ID of the
SCC. For scoresheet monitors, set the address to the lane number that
the attached LCD monitor will be used on. For TV-Only monitors that
are located between scoresheet monitors on a lane pair, set the address
to the left lane number of the pair. If the TV located between lane pairs,
use the lane number of the monitor just before it in the chain (Example:
If it's between lanes 4 and 5 , use 4).

When setting the address, each SCCs for a given type (as determined by
S1) in the daisy chain of a scoring computer must have a unique address.
